BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is caused by specific types of the human papilloma virus (HPV), but not all infected women develop cancer. It has been hypothesized that hormonal contraceptives may potentiate the oncogenicity of HPV infection.
METHODS: In a case-control study of colored and black women in the Western Cape Province, South Africa, 524 incident cases of clinically evident invasive cervical cancer (stages 1b-1V) were compared with 1541 controls, and with a subgroup of 254 HPV-positive controls.

We reviewed the published medical literature to assess the impact of the use of estrogens, with and without progestogens, on the incidence of gynecologic cancer in postmenopausal women. Hormone replacement therapy should be discussed with every postmenopausal woman and should be the first therapy offered to treat hot flashes owing to its high efficacy and other beneficial properties. Women who are ineligible for or uncomfortable with estrogen replacement therapy and who suffer from hot flashes that interfere with the quality of life should be offered other regimens as discussed in this article.

The effect of various steroids on lymphocyte transformation was tested with peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from sheep and goats. Transformation was induced with phytohaemagglutinin, pokeweed mitogen and Concanavalin A, and by allogeneic lymphocytes (mixed lymphocyte culture). A review of 251 cervical cerclage procedures in 205 women over a 7.5-year period was conducted to compare the success rate and morbidity of the Shirodkar and McDonald techniques. Fetal survival rate was 19% before 139 elective McDonald operations and 20% before 63 elective Shirodkar procedures. Plasma, leukocyte, and platelet ascorbic acid levels are decreased in women ingesting oral contraceptive steroids. Studies have shown that it is the estrogenic component of the oral contraceptive agents that is associated with the decresased ascorbic acid concentrations.
