Effects of balance training on post-sprained ankle joint instability.

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprain is a medical condition when ankle ligaments are totally or partially torn. The primary cause of ankle sprain is sharp movements like turning or rolling the foot [1]. The ankle sprain needs to be treated right after the trauma, because if not treated it could lead to decreased stability of the ankle joint and lead to chronic ankle instability, which is characterized by increased risk of the ankle sprain [2] . We suppose that rehabilitation after the ankle sprain could significantly increase the performance of sportsmen. OBJECTIVE: To investigate effects of balance exer

Effect of tibial remnant preservation on clinical, radiological and surgical outcomes in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a retrospective single-center comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Preserving the tibial remnant of a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during reconstruction is thought to enhance graft revascularisation, proprioception, and tunnel healing. However, evidence of clinical benefit remains inconsistent, and any effect size may be small. We retrospectively compared outcomes of ACL reconstruction with versus without tibial remnant preservation, explicitly accounting for potential confounders. METHODS: Between January 2018 and June 2023, 211 consecutive patients (mean age ~ 29 years) underwent primary single-bundle hamstring ACL reconstruction at our…

Quantitative Sensory Testing at Baseline and During Cycle 1 Oxaliplatin Infusion Detects Subclinical Peripheral Neuropathy and Predicts Clinically Overt Chronic Neuropathy in Gastrointestinal Malignancies.

PURPOSE: Oxaliplatin neurotoxicity has a spectrum of manifestations from an often reversible acute neurotoxicity to a more irreversible "stocking and glove" chronic neuropathy that is associated with high morbidity. Quantitative sensory testing (QST) is a noninvasive psychometric testing method that can potentially be used in the clinic setting to measure subclinical neurologic changes early on to identify patients that will experience chronic oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy at 1 year. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with gastrointestinal malignancies who were receiving oxalip

Recommendations for Combining Brain-Computer Interface, Motor Imagery, and Virtual Reality in Upper Limb Stroke Rehabilitation: Qualitative Participatory Design Study.

BACKGROUND: The high incidence and prevalence of upper limb impairment post stroke highlights the need for advancements in rehabilitation. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) represent a promising technology by directly training the central nervous system. The integration of motor imagery (MI) and motor observation through virtual reality (VR) using BCIs provides valuable opportunities for rehabilitation. However, the diversity in intervention designs demonstrates the lack of guiding recommendations integrating neurorehabilitation principles for BCIs. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop recomm

Instrumented Balance Error Scoring System in Children and Adolescents-A Cross Sectional Study.

Background: The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is a commonly used method for clinically evaluating balance after traumatic brain injury. The utilization of force plates, characterized by their cost-effectiveness and portability, facilitates the integration of instrumentation into the BESS protocol. Despite the enhanced precision associated with instrumented measures, there remains a need to determine the clinical significance and feasibility of such measures within pediatric cohorts. Objective: To report a comprehensive set of posturographic measures obtained during instrumented BESS and

Bilateral Tactile Feedback-Enabled Training for Stroke Survivors Using Microsoft KinectTM.

Rehabilitation and mobility training of post-stroke patients is crucial for their functional recovery. While traditional methods can still help patients, new rehabilitation and mobility training methods are necessary to facilitate better recovery at lower costs. In this work, our objective was to design and develop a rehabilitation training system targeting the functional recovery of post-stroke users with high efficiency. To accomplish this goal, we applied a bilateral training method, which proved to be effective in enhancing motor recovery using tactile feedback for the training. One partic

Real-time vision, tactile cues, and visual form agnosia: removing haptic feedback from a "natural" grasping task induces pantomime-like grasps.

Investigators study the kinematics of grasping movements (prehension) under a variety of conditions to probe visuomotor function in normal and brain-damaged individuals. "Natural" prehensile acts are directed at the goal object and are executed using real-time vision. Typically, they also entail the use of tactile, proprioceptive, and kinesthetic sources of haptic feedback about the object ("haptics-based object information") once contact with the object has been made. Natural and simulated (pantomimed) forms of prehension are thought to recruit different cortical structures: patient DF, who h

The role of phosphodiesterase isoforms 2, 5, and 9 in the regulation of NO-dependent and NO-independent cGMP production in the rat cervical spinal cord.

NO-responsive, cGMP-producing structures are abundantly present in the cervical spinal cord. NO-mediated cGMP synthesis has been implicated in nociceptive signaling and it has been demonstrated that cGMP has a role establishing synaptic connections in the spinal cord during development. As cGMP levels are controlled by the activity of soluble guanylyl cyclase (synthesis) and the phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity (breakdown), we studied the influence of PDE activity on NO-stimulated cGMP levels in the rat cervical spinal cord. cGMP-immunoreactivity (cGMP-IR) was localized in sections prepared fr

Sensory strategies in human postural control before and after unilateral vestibular neurotomy.

Vestibular inputs tonically activate the anti-gravitative leg muscles during normal standing in humans, and visual information and proprioceptive inputs from the legs are very sensitive sensory loops for body sway control. This study investigated the postural control in a homogeneous population of 50 unilateral vestibular-deficient patients (Ménière's disease patients). It analyzed the postural deficits of the patients before and after surgical treatment (unilateral vestibular neurotomy) of their diseases and it focused on the visual contribution to the fine regulation of body sway. Loss of Gas6 and Axl signaling results in extensive axonal damage, motor deficits, prolonged neuroinflammation, and less remyelination following cuprizone exposure.

The TAM (Tyro3, Axl, and MerTK) family of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) and their ligands, Gas6 and ProS1, are important for innate immune responses and central nervous system (CNS) homeostasis. While only Gas6 directly activates Axl, ProS1 activation of Tyro3/MerTK can indirectly activate Axl through receptor heterodimerization. Therefore, we generated Gas6-/- Axl-/- double knockout (DKO) mice to specifically examine the contribution of this signaling axis while retaining ProS1 signaling through Tyro3 and MerTK. We found that naïve young adult DKO and WT mice have comparable myelination an

Evaluation of the torque-velocity test of the BTE-Primus as a measure of sincerity of effort of grip strength.

An inverse linear relationship exists between torque and velocity in the mid-ranges of an isotonic maximal contraction in a single joint movement (such as the elbow and knee). We hypothesized that submaximal effort does not produce a linear torque-velocity relationship because replicating a submaximal isotonic contraction requires an enormous amount of proprioceptive feedback and the nervous system may not be able to accurately replicate both force and speed of contraction. If this hypothesis is true, the torque-velocity test of the BTE-Primus would be an effective method for assessing sinceri
