Sludge settleability characterized by the sludge volume index (SVI) is essential in assessing the operational stability of wastewater treatment systems. However, previous studies primarily focus on correlations between features and SVI in single wastewater treatment processes but lack revealing SVI causal relationships among multi-process differences. To address this, this study proposes a framework combining knowledge-infused feature engineering and hierarchical directed causal informatics linking strategies based on monitoring data of a full-scale multi-process wastewater treatment plant (WW

Ice fall incidents, such as detached ice chunks from bridge stay cables, pose not only serious safety hazards to pedestrians and vehicles below but also significant serviceability issues, as bridge closures required for inspection or ice removal can lead to costly disruptions. The current trend of climate change exacerbates this kind of hazard. The availability of a reliable engineering tool, such as an accurate numerical model grounded in nanoscale melt-front physics, is imperative to provide a clear insight into the ice detachment mechanism and develop effective de-icing solutions. Classical

Urban flooding, exacerbated by climate change and the expansion of impervious surfaces, poses growing risks to sustainable urban development. Enhancing soil infiltration through green infrastructure is a promising nature-based solution, yet its hydrological effectiveness and economic viability under diverse rainfall scenarios remain insufficiently quantified. This study develops an interdisciplinary framework integrating column experiments, physically distributed hydrological modeling, and cost-benefit analysis to assess ceramsite-amended soils for urban flood resilience. In laboratory tests,

INTRODUCTION: The proportion of patients with pollinosis is relatively high within the allergic disease population. Climate change and air pollution negatively affect allergic respiratory diseases. Therefore, further studies are necessary to clarify the effects of pollen grains and air pollution on allergic diseases.
METHODS: Building on our previous research, we established an Artemisia pollen-sensitized mouse model and evaluated the impact of nano-SiO2 particle exposure on pollen allergy in this study. Serum samples were collected to detect specific IgE levels and cytokines and conduct meta

The African meningitis belt (AMB) faces recurring epidemics of Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) (a bacterium that causes meningococcal meningitis), posing significant public health challenges. This study develops a Susceptible-Carrier-Infected-Recovered (SCIR)-based dynamic model to investigate Nm transmission dynamics in the AMB region, focussing on the impact of pentavalent meningococcal conjugate vaccines targeting serogroups A, C, W-135, Y, and X. By incoporating vaccination strategies into the model, we provide a comprehensive framework for evaluating vaccine effectiveness and informing outbre

The coal-fired power station is believed to be one of the major emitters of air pollutants, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), which is the main sensitive driver of climate change due to global warming, consequently causing significant intimidation for the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest and nearby due to high emissions of air pollutants such as Carbon-Di-Oxide (CO2). Here, we used a compartmental mathematical model with 3 compartments to study the dynamics of greenhouse gas emissions, concentration, and uptake, which we can control by installing a chemical reactor system near

BACKGROUND: Mosquitoes play an absolute role in the spread of epidemic arbovirus diseases. Worldwide, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the main vectors responsible for the spread of these mosquito-borne diseases. Aedes vexans, a mosquito species native to China, also carries mosquito-borne viruses, such as dengue fever virus and Japanese encephalitis virus, but research on this mosquito has been inadequate. Mapping the potential distribution range of and monthly change in the distribution of these three Aedes species is of particular importance for mosquito surveillance, eradication and

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a zoonotic emerging infectious disease caused by New World orthohantaviruses (family Hantaviridae) hosted by rodents of the family Cricetidae. In Argentina, one of its main hosts is the sigmodontine rodent Oligoryzomys flavescens, a widely distributed mouse of the Pampas, Delta and Espinal ecoregions of central-east Argentina. Because the abundance of the reservoir and its proportion in the rodent community affects both virus prevalence and human exposure risk, its estimation throughout its known geographical distribution is of key importance for the desi

Ancestral state reconstructions in Bayesian phylogeography of virus pandemics have been improved by utilizing a Bayesian stochastic search variable selection (BSSVS) framework. Recently, this framework has been extended to model the transition rate matrix between discrete states as a generalized linear model (GLM) of genetic, geographic, demographic, and environmental predictors of interest to the virus and incorporating BSSVS to estimate the posterior inclusion probabilities of each predictor. Although the latter appears to enhance the biological validity of ancestral state reconstruction, th

Anthrax is hyper-endemic in West Africa. Despite the effectiveness of livestock vaccines in controlling anthrax, underreporting, logistics, and limited resources makes implementing vaccination campaigns difficult. To better understand the geographic limits of anthrax, elucidate environmental factors related to its occurrence, and identify human and livestock populations at risk, we developed predictive models of the environmental suitability of anthrax in Ghana. We obtained data on the location and date of livestock anthrax from veterinary and outbreak response records in Ghana during 2005-201

Many studies examined the short-term effects of air pollution on frequency of daily mortality over the past two decades. However, information on the relationship between exposure to levels of coarse particles (PM(2.5-10)) and daily mortality rate is relatively sparse due to limited availability of monitoring data and findings are inconsistent. This study was undertaken to determine whether an association exists between PM(2.5-10) levels and rate of daily mortality in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, a large industrial city with a tropical climate. Daily mortality rate, air pollution parameters, and weather

Spatial modelling was applied to self-reported schistosomiasis data from over 2.5 million school students from 12,399 schools in all regions of mainland Tanzania. The aims were to derive statistically robust prevalence estimates in small geographical units (wards), to identify spatial clusters of high and low prevalence and to quantify uncertainty surrounding prevalence estimates. The objective was to permit informed decision-making for targeting of resources by the Tanzanian national schistosomiasis control programme. Bayesian logistic regression models were constructed to investigate the ris

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease posing a major health challenge in tropical and subtropical regions, including Malaysia, where the climate supports year-round transmission. It affects millions annually, leading to severe illness and hospitalization, while the lack of specific antiviral treatment and the expanding range of Aedes mosquitoes make dengue a persistent global threat. To overcome this issue, this study develops a time delay SEITR-SEI model incorporating two biologically motivated delays representing the human intrinsic and vector extrinsic incubation periods. Firstly,

For millennia, human activities have transformed ecosystems globally. Determining which landscapes are predominantly anthropogenic is crucial to conservation and habitat restoration. Madagascar, a critically-threatened biodiversity hotspot, is a prominent example. Currently 80% of non-cropland habitat is tree-limited savanna falling under the tropical grassy biome (savanna/TGB). Savanna/TGB is particularly prevalent in the Dry Deciduous Forest (DDF) in the north/northwest and below the treeline in the Central Highlands (CH). Relative savanna/TGB cover when agropastoralism arrived <1300 years a

Growing global data volumes and the increasing frequency of climate-related and geopolitical threats highlight the need for ultra-resilient backup infrastructures. This paper proposes a novel Satellite-RAID architecture, named O-RAID, in which clusters of satellites operate as a distributed redundant array of independent disks (RAID), enabling large-scale cold and warm backup storage in Earth's orbit. Unlike previous work on space-based computing or satellite cloud relays, this research presents a formal design for orbital storage redundancy, inter-satellite parity exchange, latency-tolerant R

Moisture carried by the mid-latitude westerlies is an important source of water for the Asian Water Towers (AWTs), but how this moisture crosses the high Himalaya has remained unclear. Here, we use a tethered balloon to measure atmospheric water vapor and its isotopic compositions (δDv and d-excessv) from the surface to 9050 m above sea level in late spring (May 2022) on the northern side of Mt. Qomolangma. These measurements show that the westerlies can transport moisture from the south of the Himalaya across the high-altitude barrier, particularly above 7000 m above sea level, into the AWTs.

INTRODUCTION: The expansion and contraction of species ranges result from population dynamics, species interactions, and environmental responses. As temperatures rise at high latitudes, some temperate species may be shifting poleward. As non-native species expand in range they threaten native biodiversity and disrupt ecosystem functioning, making range dynamics critical to understand for effective control programs.
METHODS: This study examined the dynamics of the southern geographic limit of non-native Coleoptera species in Chile. Using occurrence data from 25 species recorded between 2007 to

This work presents the conceptual process design and life-cycle Greenhouse Gas (GHG) analysis for converting mixed plastic waste (MPW) into polymer-grade olefins (≥99.9 wt % ethylene and propylene) via sequential pyrolysis, e-cracking, compression, and separation. The integrated plant-wide process modeling was performed within a Python-based framework as an alternative to conventional commercial simulators. Eight scenarios were assessed by combining centralised and decentralised configurations, combined heat and power (CHP)-powered and fully electrified operation, and grid versus renewable ele

The effects of ongoing anthropogenic climate change are not well known in marine diatoms, a key group of primary producers. Specifically, detailed characterizations of their carbon-concentrating mechanisms (CCMs) are lacking, which limits the understanding of how changing ocean carbonate chemistry will impact global primary production. While the model diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana has been widely studied, contrasting results have prevented the clear elucidation of its CCM. A quantitative proteomic analysis was therefore performed across three experimental treatments (low pCO2/high pH, high p
