OBJECTIVE: Chronic, persistent infections complicate otologic procedures utilizing implantable devices such as cochlear implants or tympanostomy tubes. These infections are thought to be due to the establishment of microbial biofilms on implant surfaces. To address this issue, we hypothesized that surface charge modification may inhibit the formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms on implant surfaces in vitro and in vivo.
STUDY DESIGN: We evaluated the effect of surface charge modification on bacterial biofilm formation by assessing the effect of the surface charge on bacterial adhesion i

Stapes protheses are designed for patients with otosclerosis resulting immobilization or significant reduction of the stapes mobility. All currently used prostheses are called - piston prosthesis. However, its use to stimulate the cochlea is still imperfect. New chamber stapes prosthesis allows the perilymph excitation more effective than the piston prothesis. Moreover, the chamber prosthesis eliminates the common causes of piston-stapedotomy failures. The most important element of the new prosthesis is a flexible membrane. The membrane stiffness should be close to the stiffness of normal annu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) represents a major technological advancement in computed tomography, offering improved spatial resolution, reduced image noise, and increased dose efficiency compared with conventional energy-integrating detector CT (EID-CT). Because many clinically relevant structures within the temporal bone are submillimeter in size, the temporal bone represents an ideal region for determining whether these technical improvements translate into meaningful clinical benefits. This review evaluates the emerging literature on PCD-CT in tem

The auditory circuit primarily consists of peripheral auditory organs and auditory neural pathways. Hearing loss (HL), as reported by the World Health Organization, affects more than one in eight people worldwide, often leading to severe dysfunction that detrimentally impacts patients' quality of life. Therefore, auditory reconstruction has emerged as a persistent research hotspot and challenge within the biomedical field. Traditional methods for auditory reconstruction, such as drug therapy, hearing aids, cochlear implants (CIs), and so on. To a certain extent, it can help patients with HL im

INTRODUCTION: Current scientific developments seem to allow for an "olfactory implant" in analogy to cochlear implants. However, the position and surgical approaches for electrical stimulation of the olfactory system are unclear.
METHODS: In a human anatomic cadaver study, we investigated different endoscopic approaches to electrically stimulate the olfactory bulb (OB) based on the following considerations: (1) the stimulating electrode should be close to the OB. (2) The surgical procedure should be as non-invasive and safe as possible and (3) as easy as possible for an experienced ENT surgeo

PURPOSE: Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and who use hearing aids or cochlear implants are more likely than their peers with typical hearing to exhibit behavior problems. Although multiple evidence-based interventions for child behavior problems exist, they are rarely delivered to children who are DHH, and no rigorous randomized controlled trials have been conducted to determine their effects with this population. This protocol describes a study aiming to test the effectiveness of an evidence-based behavioral parent training intervention adapted for parents of young children who

Inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) have been observed in individuals with hearing loss (HL), but IMDs are rarely the cause of syndromic HL. With early diagnosis, management of HL is more effective and cortical reorganization is possible with hearing aids or cochlear implants. This review describes relationships between IMDs and HL in terms of incidence, etiology of HL, pathophysiology, and treatment. Forty types of IMDs are described in the literature, mainly in case reports. Management and prognosis are noted where existing. We also describe IMDs with HL given age of occurrence of HL. Revie

The present work attempts to enhance the sensitivity of a folded beam microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) capacitive accelerometer by optimising the device geometry. The accelerometer is intended to serve as a microphone in the fully implantable hearing application which can be surgically implanted in the middle ear bone structure. For the efficient design of the accelerometer as a fully implantable biomedical device, the design parameters such as size, weight and resonant frequency have been considered. The geometrical parameters are varied to obtain the optimum sensitivity considering the

Paget's disease is a common bone remodeling disorder that typically begins with excessive bone resorption in the elderly. Bilateral progress … ese open set monosyllable word recognition test in a sound field at 65 dB had a result of 74%. This cochlear implantation can be an indication for cases of profound hearing loss due to Paget's disease.

The surgical rehabilitation of mixed hearing losses can be performed by coupling the floating mass transducer of the Vibrant Soundbridge to the round window. The quality of coupling the floating mass transducer to the round window is crucial for the audiological outcome. It was the aim of this study to further observe the different patterns of floating mass transducer position at the round window. We compared twenty patients with mixed hearing loss implanted with a floating mass transducer attached to the round window and 24 surgeries between 5/2007 and 6/2010. An evaluation of the chronologic

Aural rehabilitation involves a complete evaluation of the communication deficits and needs of the hearing-impaired patient as well as the provision of counselling and therapy. This article describes listening-assistive devices, speech production, and audiovisual training. Issues related to educational placement and tinnitus also are reviewed.

468 stapes operations have been performed at the ENT-Department of the University of Zurich between 1970 and 1978. In one half of the cases, a total or partial removal of the footplate with introduction of a wire connective tissue prosthesis has been used. In the other half, the operation consisted in a limited fenestration of the footplate, which was large enough to accept a wire teflon piston of 0.6 mm diameter. Statistical analysis of the results of both methods shows a better bone conduction threshold for the speech frequencies (500, 1,000 and 2,000 Hz) as well as for air conduction at 4,0

Etiologies of hearing loss vary. When hearing loss is diagnosed, referral to an otology subspecialist, audiology subspecialist, or hearing aid dispenser to discuss treatment options is appropriate. Conventional hearing aids provide increased sound pressure in the ear canal for detection of sounds that might otherwise be soft or inaudible. Hearing aids can be used for sensorineural, conductive, or mixed hearing loss by patients with a wide range of hearing loss severity. The most common type of hearing loss is high-frequency, which affects audibility and perception of speech consonants, but not
