BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial diseases are a group of serious inherited multisystem disorders caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) or nuclear DNA and still have faced a significant challenge to therapy due to their complicated genotype-phenotype relationships and diverse clinical manifestations. Human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) offered novel opportunities for cell-based modeling mitochondrial diseases in a patient-specific level. This study aims to explore possibility to potential strategy against mutation-associated oxidative damage through hiPSCs derived from mitochondrial

UNLABELLED: Inborn errors of metabolism are an individually rare but collectively significant cause of mortality and morbidity in the neonatal period. They are identified by either newborn screening programmes or clinician-initiated targeted biochemical screening. This study examines the relative contribution of these two methods to the identification of inborn errors of metabolism and describes the incidence of these conditions in a large, tertiary, neonatal unit. We also examined which factors could impact the reliability of metabolic testing in this cohort. This is a retrospective, single-s

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, both the history and laboratory testing are paramount to making an accurate diagnosis. Situations in which laboratory findings and patient history are not congruent pose a diagnostic dilemma. We report a case of a young woman presenting with a myriad of electrolyte and acid-base disorders. Difficulty in reaching a unifying diagnosis persisted due to discordant patient history. We believe this case shows that lab findings will clearly portray the problems a patient has and should be given more credence in a case where the history is discordant with lab findings

INTRODUCTION: Potassium abnormalities are frequent in intensive care but their incidence in the emergency department is unknown.
AIM: We describe the spectrum of potassium abnormalities in our tertiary-level pediatric emergency department.
METHODS: Retrospective case-control study of all the patients admitted to a single-center tertiary emergency department over a 2.5-year period. We compared patients with hypokalemia (<3.0mEq/L) and patients with hyperkalemia (>6.0mEq/L) against a normal randomized population recruited on a 3:1 ratio with potassium levels between 3.5 and 5mEq/L.
RESULTS: B

The mitochondrial aspartate-glutamate carrier 1 (AGC1 or aralar) is a key component of the malate-aspartate shuttle (MAS), which transfers NADH-derived reducing equivalents from the cytosol into mitochondria to support oxidative phosphorylation. Disruption of MAS leads to cytosolic NADH accumulation, NAD+ depletion, and a reduced NAD+/NADH ratio, impairing redox-sensitive enzymes. AGC1 is primarily expressed in the central nervous system. AGC1 deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by seizures, intellectual disability, and hypomyelination. The disorder impairs mitochon

BACKGROUND: Low immunity and sleep disorders are prevalent suboptimal health conditions in contemporary populations, which render them susceptible to the infiltration of pathogenic factors. LJC, which has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine for nourishing the Yin and blood and calming the mind, is obtained by modifying Qiyuan paste. Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo has been shown to improve the immune function in sleep-deprived mice. In this study, based on the traditional Chinese medicine theory, LJC was prepared by adding D. officinale Kimura et Migo to Qiyuan paste decoction.

Congenital dyserythropoietic anemias (CDAs) are rare hereditary disorders, of which type II CDA is the most common. Mutations in the SEC23B gene located on chromosome 20 result in this autosomal recessive disorder. In this case report, we present a case of CDA II with unique biopsy findings being detected via genetic testing. A female aged 30 years presented with major complaints of pallor weakness and easy fatiguability since childhood. The patient gave a history of 25 units of blood transfusion, the majority of which were transfused during pregnancy, followed by regular transfusions thereaft

INTRODUCTION: Fibrin stabilizing factor (FXIII) plays a crucial role in blood clotting, tissue repair, and immune defense. FXIII deficiency after trauma can lead to prolonged wound healing due to persistent infections or coagulation disorders. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of acquired FXIII deficiency after trauma and to provide a description of the time-course changes of important coagulation parameters in relation to FXIII activity. In this context, patient characteristics, laboratory data, and treatment modalities were examined with respect to their influence on FXIII

In the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic, several research studies focused on understanding the damage to the respiratory and circulatory systems. However, the evidence of neurological manifestations as part of the clinical spectrum of the disease has increased. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the potential association of neurological disorders with concomitant COVID-19 infection. We reviewed 101 patients (mean age, 70.05 years; 62.37% men) diagnosed with different neurological disorders and COVID-19 who were referred to the Department of Neurology between March 2020 a

Aerobic glycolysis increases in tumor cells and pyruvate kinase (PK) is one of the key enzymes involved; PK exists in different isoforms in various tissues. Tumor M2-PK (TM2-PK) is one of these isoforms and its expression has been observed in various tumor cells, including lymphocytes, and in lymphoproliferative disorders. The present study aimed to compare plasma levels of TM2-PK and serum levels of two established markers of various lymphoproliferative disorders-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and β-2 microglobulin, and to evaluate the role of TM2-PK in drug monitorization and disease activity i

In neonatal rats, hunger and satiety responses occur particularly via dehydration and gastric distention, respectively. The control of food intake in newborns is yet to be fully consolidated, particularly with respect to the participation of the hypothalamic nuclei and their relationship with the serotonergic pathway. Moreover, it is unclear how the environmental stressors in early life, like undernutrition, interfere in these events. Therefore, this study examined the serotonin-system's impact on food intake in rat neonates at postnatal day (P) 10 and P18 and the manner in which protein under

We report a case of a 45 year old Caucasian malnourished male with an history of eating disorder who developed severe liver and pancreatic damage and multiorgan disfunction. At admission to our department, his body mass index (BMI) was 11.1. Biochemical evaluation showed elevated serum levels of transaminases (AST= 2291 U/L, ALT= 1792 U/L), amylase (3620 U/L), lipase (4102 U/L), CPK= 1370 U/L, LDH= 2082 U/L. No other cause of acute liver and pancreatic damage was evidenced. Haematological disorders (anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia) found on admission seem related to bone marrow hypoplasia
