Automated detection of pipe water leaks under paved surfaces with machine learning analysis of satellite radar data.

Growing water shortages from droughts and climate change make leak detection in distribution networks increasingly important. Pipeline leaks can waste large volumes of water and cause progressive damage to sourrounding infrastructure if not identified quickly, yet traditional inspections are localized and periodic, providing only brief snapshots of system conditions. This limited approach is inefficient for large networks, whereas above-the-ground remote sensing offers faster, broader, and more continuous monitoring. Previous studies have used optical imagery to infer leaks on bare soil surfac

Leptospirosis in Southeast Asia: Investigating Seroprevalence, Transmission Patterns, and Diagnostic Challenges.

Leptospirosis remains a significant public health and economic burden in Southeast Asia, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where environmental, occupational, and socioeconomic factors contribute to its endemicity. Transmission is driven by close interactions between humans and infected animal reservoirs, alongside climatic conditions such as heavy rainfall and flooding. The region's high but variable seroprevalence reflects inconsistencies in diagnostic methodologies and surveillance systems, complicating disease burden estimation. Major gaps persist in diagnostic capabilities,

Environmental and Dispersal-Related Drivers of Color Morph Distribution in Triatoma infestans (Klug, 1834) (Hemiptera, Reduviidae).

Understanding the dispersal capacity of Triatoma infestans, the main vector of Chagas disease in South America, is vital for vector control and managing recolonization after insecticide use. This study compares the seasonal frequency of melanic and non-melanic T. infestans morphs in Northwestern Córdoba Province, Argentina, and examines their association with environmental variables, morphometric traits, nutritional status, and flight capacity. Insects were collected at the beginning and end of the warm season. Dorsal coloration, morphometric traits, nutritional status, flight-related indices,

Mitigating Wildfire Impact on Water Quality through Climate-Based Financing: A Case Study of the Provo River Watershed.

Following wildfires, riverine water quality in forested watersheds is prone to degradation, impacting drinking water treatment and potentially causing increased carbon emissions because of additional electricity consumption during treatment. We explore the potential for climate-based financing to support wildfire mitigation and watershed restoration by reducing potential water treatment energy demand following a fire within the Provo River watershed, Utah, USA. We model pre- and post-wildfire erosion and water quality in the Provo River using GeoWEPP. We use energy data from a water treatment

Fluorinated greenhouse gas mitigation potential and routes in China and globally.

Facing the 2035 nationally determined contributions and carbon neutral target, the mitigation potential and cost of fluorinated gases (F-gases), fast-growing greenhouse gases, need to be evaluated. Applying the established DECAF model, this study assessed China's F-gas mitigation potential, as well as its climate and economic impacts. Over 2021-2060, territorial cumulative GWP100-weighted F-gas abatement of 42∼50 gigatonnes CO2-eq (62%-74% reduction) could be achieved in China at the cost of 30∼44 USD/t CO2-eq, with remaining emissions of 143∼390 Mt CO2-eq yr-1 in 2060. Of these, the product u

Identifying the impact and critical windows of extreme temperatures on the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus in twin pregnancies.

Extreme temperature events have become more frequent due to industrialization, urbanization, and climate change, leading to health risks. Women with twin pregnancies are particularly vulnerable, yet research on how these temperatures affect gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) remains limited. This study investigates the impact of extreme temperatures on GDM incidence in twin pregnancies, focusing on identifying critical periods of susceptibility. Data from 3,769 twin pregnancies were analyzed using temperature information from local meteorological stations. Extreme temperatures, defined as hea

Local Economic Conditions Affect Aedes albopictus Management.

Invasive mosquitoes are an emerging public health issue, as many species are competent vectors for pathogens. We assessed how multiple environmental and socio-economic factors affected the engagement of municipalities in Italy (n = 7679) in actions against Aedes albopictus, an invasive mosquito affecting human health and well-being, between 2000 and 2020. We collected information about mosquito control from official documents and municipal websites and modeled the role played by multiple environmental and socioeconomic factors characterizing each municipality through the random forest algorith

Dissecting Drivers of Ozone Pollution during the 2022 Multicity Lockdowns in China Sheds Light on Future Control Direction.

In 2022, many Chinese cities experienced lockdowns and heatwaves. We analyzed ground and satellite data using machine learning to elucidate chemical and meteorological drivers of changes in O3 pollution in 27 major Chinese cities during lockdowns. We found that there was an increase in O3 concentrations in 23 out of 27 cities compared with the corresponding period in 2021. Random forest modeling indicates that emission reductions in transportation and other sectors, as well as the changes in meteorology, increased the level of O3 in most cities. In cities with over 80% transportation reduction

Abrupt demographic change affects projected population size: Implications for an endangered species in a protected area.

Understanding how demographic parameters change with density is essential for predicting the resilience of small populations. We use long-term, individual-based life history data from an isolated population of the Critically Endangered Northern Muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) inhabiting a 1000-ha protected forest to evaluate density-dependent demographic rates before and after an abrupt population decline. We found no effect of density on fertility or birth sex ratio, but mortality rates increased linearly with log density over the 33 years of population growth (1983-2015) and the subsequent

Risk assessment and disease burden of extreme precipitation on hospitalizations for acute aortic dissection in a subtropical coastal Chinese city.

BACKGROUND: Extreme precipitation events are becoming more frequent due to climate change. The present study aimed to explore the impacts of extreme precipitation on hospitalizations for acute aortic dissection (AAD) and to identify susceptible populations and quantify the corresponding disease burden. METHODS: The present study used a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) with a quasi-Poisson function to investigate the association between extreme precipitation (≥95th percentile) and the risk of hospitalizations for AAD from 2015 to 2020 in Shantou, Guangdong Province, China. RESULTS: The

Diet, habitat and flight characteristics correlate with intestine length in birds.

A link between diet and avian intestinal anatomy is generally assumed. We collated the length of intestinal sections and body mass of 390 bird species and tested relationships with diet, climate and locomotion. There was a strong phylogenetic signal in all datasets. The total and small intestine scaled more-than-geometrically (95%CI of the scaling exponent > 0.33). The traditional dietary classification (faunivore, omnivore and herbivore) had no significant effect on total intestine (TI) length. Significant dietary proxies included %folivory, %frugi-nectarivory and categories (frugi-nectarivor

Be YOU!: A Collaborative Effort to Address Minority Stress for LGBTQ+ Youth in School Settings.

LGBTQ youth often experience unsafe school climates and are at greater risk for compromised mental health relative to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. The psychological mediation model posits that these health inequities are produced by minority stress, which operates through several key mechanisms: rumination, emotion regulation, and coping. Efforts towards designing social services that might address these mechanisms, and thus improve LGBTQ youth wellbeing, are limited. Informed by empirical research and therapeutic practices, Be YOU! was conceived as a school-based empowerment progra

Linking spatial distribution of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus to climatic variables important for the successful biocontrol by Metarhizium anisopliae in Eastern Africa.

Cattle production is constantly threatened by diseases like East Coast fever, also known as theileriosis, caused by the protozoan parasite Theileria parva which is transmitted by ticks such as the brown ear tick, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. To reduce the extensive use of chemical acaricides, fungal-based microbial control agents such as Metarhizium anisopliae have been tested and show promising results against R. appendiculatus both in field and in semi-field experiments in Africa. However, no known endeavors to link the spatial distribution of R. appendiculatus to climatic variables importa

Antarctic ozone hole modifies iodine geochemistry on the Antarctic Plateau.

Polar stratospheric ozone has decreased since the 1970s due to anthropogenic emissions of chlorofluorocarbons and halons, resulting in the formation of an ozone hole over Antarctica. The effects of the ozone hole and the associated increase in incoming UV radiation on terrestrial and marine ecosystems are well established; however, the impact on geochemical cycles of ice photoactive elements, such as iodine, remains mostly unexplored. Here, we present the first iodine record from the inner Antarctic Plateau (Dome C) that covers approximately the last 212 years (1800-2012 CE). Our results show

The impacts of precipitation patterns on dengue epidemics in Guangzhou city.

Some studies have demonstrated that precipitation is an important risk factor of dengue epidemics. However, current studies mostly focused on a single precipitation variable, and few studies focused on the impact of precipitation patterns on dengue epidemics. This study aims to explore optimal precipitation patterns for dengue epidemics. Weekly dengue case counts and meteorological data from 2006 to 2018 in Guangzhou of China were collected. A generalized additive model with Poisson distribution was used to investigate the association between precipitation patterns and dengue. Precipitation pa

Inferring who-infected-whom-where in the 2016 Zika outbreak in Singapore-a spatio-temporal model.

Singapore experienced its first known Zika outbreak in 2016. Given the lack of herd immunity, the suitability of the climate for pathogen transmission, and the year-round presence of the vector- Aedes aegypti-Zika had the potential to become endemic, like dengue. Guillain-Barré syndrome and microcephaly are severe complications associated elsewhere with Zika and the risk of these complications makes understanding its spread imperative. We investigated the spatio-temporal spread of locally transmitted Zika in Singapore and assessed the relevance of non-residential transmission of Zika virus inf
