A 240-Element Matrix Probe With Aberration Mask for 4-D Carotid Artery Computational Ultrasound Imaging.

Three-dimensional ultrasound provides enhanced visualization of the carotid artery (CA) anatomy and volumetric flow, offering improved accuracy for cardiovascular diagnosis and monitoring. However, fully populated matrix transducers with large apertures are complex and costly to implement. Computational ultrasound imaging (cUSi) offers a promising alternative by enabling simplified hardware design through modelbased reconstruction and spatial field encoding. In this work, we present a 3-D cUSi system tailored for CA imaging, consisting of a 240-element matrix probe with a $40 \,\, \times \,\,

Inertial Measuring System to Evaluate Gait Parameters and Dynamic Alignments for Lower-Limb Amputation Subjects.

The study aims to construct an inertial measuring system for the application of amputee subjects wearing a prosthesis. A new computation scheme to process inertial data by installing seven wireless inertial sensors on the lower limbs was implemented and validated by comparing it with an optical motion capture system. We applied this system to amputees to verify its performance for gait analysis. The gait parameters are evaluated to objectively assess the amputees' prosthesis-wearing status. The Madgwick algorithm was used in the study to correct the angular velocity deviation using acceleratio

Coordinating upper limbs for octave playing on the piano via neuro-musculoskeletal modeling.

Understanding the coordination of multiple biomechanical degrees of freedom in biological organisms is crucial for unraveling the neurophysiological control of sophisticated motor tasks. This study focuses on the cooperative behavior of upper-limb motor movements in the context of octave playing on the piano. While the vertebrate locomotor system has been extensively investigated, the coherence and precision timing of rhythmic movements in the upper-limb system remain incompletely understood. Inspired by the spinal cord neuronal circuits (central pattern generator, CPG), a computational neuro-

Different Dopaminergic Dysfunctions Underlying Parkinsonian Akinesia and Tremor.

Although the occurrence of Parkinsonian akinesia and tremor is traditionally associated to dopaminergic degeneration, the multifaceted neural processes that cause these impairments are not fully understood. As a consequence, current dopamine medications cannot be tailored to the specific dysfunctions of patients with the result that generic drug therapies produce different effects on akinesia and tremor. This article proposes a computational model focusing on the role of dopamine impairments in the occurrence of akinesia and resting tremor. The model has three key features, to date never integ

Optimal feedback control to describe multiple representations of primary motor cortex neurons.

Primary motor cortex (M1) neurons are tuned in response to several parameters related to motor control, and it was recently reported that M1 is important in feedback control. However, it remains unclear how M1 neurons encode information to control the musculoskeletal system. In this study, we examined the underlying computational mechanisms of M1 based on optimal feedback control (OFC) theory, which is a plausible hypothesis for neuromotor control. We modelled an isometric torque production task that required joint torque to be regulated and maintained at desired levels in a musculoskeletal sy

Design of Wearable Breathing Sound Monitoring System for Real-Time Wheeze Detection.

In the clinic, the wheezing sound is usually considered as an indicator symptom to reflect the degree of airway obstruction. The auscultation approach is the most common way to diagnose wheezing sounds, but it subjectively depends on the experience of the physician. Several previous studies attempted to extract the features of breathing sounds to detect wheezing sounds automatically. However, there is still a lack of suitable monitoring systems for real-time wheeze detection in daily life. In this study, a wearable and wireless breathing sound monitoring system for real-time wheeze detection w

Three-dimensional structure of apical vesicles of tuft cells in the main excretory duct of the rat submandibular gland.

Tuft cells are present in the mucosal epithelium of a number of hollow organs including the main excretory duct (MED). Despite their distinctive features such as the long, thick, blunt microvilli with prominent rootlets and the large number of vesicles in the apical cytoplasm, the hypolemmal terminal-tuft cell relationship and the true form of the various vesicles and tubules are still controversial. The present study investigated the above mentioned features of tuft cells in the MED of rat submandibular gland by computer three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction with focus on their function. Com

Treadmill chamber for studies of respiratory gas exchange in the rat during exercise.

A treadmill for studying gas exchange in small mammals during exercise is presented. The system consists of a motor-driven running mat enclosed in a gastight chamber that receives a measured flow of air from a compressed air cylinder. The gas flow and temperature, pressure and instantaneous gas composition of the chamber (oxygen, carbon dioxide and water) are measured continuously and the data are computed to include the effects on chamber atmosphere of the rat activity, either running or at rest. The system is completed with a shock delivery grid that stimulates the rat to run. The calculatio

Breaking barriers: Medicinal chemistry strategies and advanced in-silico approaches for overcoming the BBB and enhancing CNS penetration.

Delivering small molecules to the brain and central nervous system (CNS) is greatly hindered by the restrictive blood-brain barrier (BBB), which selectively permits essential molecules while excluding toxic molecules. This selective permeability feature of the membrane also poses a challenge in delivering small molecules to the brain intended for therapeutic benefits. Pharmaceutical approaches such as designing a prodrug, conjugating with liposomes/immunoliposomes, and formulating as nanoparticles have been employed to increase BBB penetration. Despite these efforts, the challenge of suboptima

Parkinsonism and dysautonomia with anti-CV2/CRMP5 associated paraneoplastic neurological syndromes mimicking multiple system atrophy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNSs) are broad-spectrum disorders that can affect any part of the nervous system varying in core symptoms. Onconeural antibodies, including Hu, Yo, Ri, anti-CV2, amphiphysin, Ma2, and Tr are well-characterized and commonly used for the diagnosis of definite PNS. Generally, anti-CV2 antibodies have usually been associated with cerebellar ataxia, chorea, peripheral and autonomic neuropathies, myelopathy, optic neuritis, and retinitis. However, Parkinsonism has not been reported as the core symptom in patients with anti-CV2 antibodies. CASE PRE

Mitral valve Libman-Sacks endocarditis visualized by real time three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography.

Libman-Sacks endocarditis (LSE) is a common manifestation of valve disease in antiphospholipid syndrome. Mitral valve LSE is characterized by verrucous vegetations on the atrial surfaces of valve leaflets. In this report, mitral valve LSE was visualized by real time 3D transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). 3D TEE provides a unique en face view of the mitral valve akin to a surgical or autopsy view that allows for an accurate determination of the size, shape, and location of the vegetations.

Large-scale identification and translocation of type IV secretion substrates by Coxiella burnetii.

Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen responsible for acute and chronic Q fever. This bacterium harbors a type IV secretion system (T4SS) highly similar to the Dot/Icm of Legionella pneumophila that is believed to be essential for its infectivity. Protein substrates of the Coxiella T4SS are predicted to facilitate the biogenesis of a phagosome permissive for its intracellular growth. However, due to the lack of genetic systems, protein transfer by the C. burnetii Dot/Icm has not been demonstrated. In this study, we report the identification of 32 substrates of the C

Pocket EZPIN device for healthcare IC cards to enhance the security and convenience of senior citizens.

An application that adopts smart cards often requires users to enter a PIN (Personal Identification Number) code. In Taiwan's healthcare system, a PIN is used to protect a card holder's private data. However, should one forget one's PIN, the procedure to set up a new PIN is inconvenient. There is a higher probability that senior citizens may forget their PINs. We propose a device which stores the PIN of the cardholder's Healthcare IC card. When the healthcare IC card reader requires the cardholder to enter his/her PIN, the cardholder pushes a button of the device to remotely sends the cardhold

[A major visceral anomaly from malrotation of the primitive digestive tube (author's transl)].

Report of a case of major anomaly of the primitive digestive tube. Due to gastric malrotation the stomach was located to the right, behind the right lobe of the liver and the duodenum ran upward and to the left, passing behind the major biliary tract (mirror image of the normal gastroduodenal structure). The small intestine having undergone a normal rotation, the splenic flexure did not exist, while the ileum and colon gave an image of inversed "Mesenterium commune" (absence of the transverse colon, the ascending colon to the right and all the small intestine reassembled to the left). Validation of wearable inertial sensor-based gait analysis system for measurement of spatiotemporal parameters and lower extremity joint kinematics in sagittal plane.

Wearable inertial sensor-based motion analysis systems are promising alternatives to standard camera-based motion capture systems for the measurement of gait parameters and joint kinematics. These wearable sensors, unlike camera-based gold standard systems, find usefulness in outdoor natural environment along with confined indoor laboratory-based environment due to miniature size and wireless data transmission. This study reports validation of our developed (i-Sens) wearable motion analysis system against standard motion capture system. Gait analysis was performed at self-selected speed on non
