Review of the allergic contact dermatitis hazard posed by chromium-contaminated soil: identifying a "safe" concentration.

At least 200 sites in the United States contain soil with elevated levels of trivalent and hexavalent chromium [Cr(III) and Cr(VI)]. Although the potential cancer hazard posed by airborne Cr(VI) has been the primary concern for these sites, a soil cleanup standard based on the potential elicitation of allergic contact dermatitis has been proposed for sites in Hudson County, N.J. This paper describes the rationale for identifying a soil concentration of Cr(VI) that should not pose an allergic contact dermatitis hazard-even in sensitized persons. A literature review of eight published patch test

Acetylcholine receptor degradation measured by density labeling: effects of cholinergic ligands and evidence against recycling.

The methodology of density labeling of proteins by biosynthetic incorporation of 2H, 13C, 15N-amino acids into newly synthesized polypeptide chains allows the direct measurement of the turnover rate of the acetylcholine receptor in cultured chick skeletal muscle. In this study, receptors synthesized in medium containing 2H, 13C, 15N-amino acids were resolved from 1H, 12C, 14N-receptors by velocity sedimentation in sucrose-deuterium oxide gradients, and their proportions were determined by computer analysis of the gradient profiles. The kinetics of turnover of acetylcholine receptors are identi

Machine learning for prediction of newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation after emergency percutaneous coronary intervention during hospitalization in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: a multi-center prospective study.

BACKGROUND: In-hospital complications after emergency PCI in acute STEMI are important, especially newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation and are associated with hemodynamic instability, heart failure, stroke and mortality. There are complex nonlinear interactions between clinical, inflammatory, cardiac remodeling and procedural factors that traditional risk scores may not adequately capture. Thus, this study aimed to develop and validate an interpretable machine-learning model for early prediction of in-hospital NDAF in patients with acute STEMI undergoing emergency PCI. METHODS: From January 2

A proof-of-concept study of multitask learning for cranial synthetic CT generation across heterogeneous MRI field strengths.

BACKGROUND: Accurate synthesis of computed tomography (CT) images from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is clinically valuable for cranial applications such as attenuation correction, radiotherapy planning, and image-guided interventions. However, the heterogeneity of MRI data across magnetic field strengths and pulse sequences limits the generalizability of existing methods, posing a barrier to clinical translation. PURPOSE: This study aims to reformulate cranial CT synthesis as a modular, structurally coupled problem using a deep learning approach, enhancing adaptability across heterogeneou

A monolithic patient-specific 3D-0D model for In silico investigation of hemodynamics in patients with left ventricular assist devices.

We present a fully coupled, patient-specific 3D-0D computational framework for hearts supported with left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) that enables controlled in silico experimentation. The approach monolithically integrates three-dimensional CFD of the left ventricle (LV), left atrium (LA), aortic root, and LVAD cannulae with a closed-loop 0D lumped parameter network of the full circulation. Mitral and aortic valve dynamics are governed by transvalvular pressure and flow with patient-specific regurgitant orifice areas, and the LVAD is represented via a pressure-flow (H-Q) relation. This

Effect of time window on MVC reference for quantifying spastic cocontraction in spastic paresis.

INTRODUCTION: In hemiparesis, spastic cocontraction is typically quantified by normalizing electromyographic activity to the root mean square (RMS) values obtained during maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the cocontracting muscle when it acts as an agonist. However, the selection of the RMS time window and the use of filtering procedures vary widely across studies, limiting comparability. In this study, we evaluated the effects of window size and low-pass filter cutoff frequency (ƒc) on the RMS values obtained during MVC in chronic hemiparesis. METHODS: Participants with stroke-induced h

Climate-driven flooding widens economic inequalities across EU regions.

With growing consensus on the scale of climate change and its direct impacts on societies and economies, the debate on how direct climate damages cascade through interconnected economic systems eventually leading to profound indirect effects remains open amid limited quantitative evidence. The localised nature of climate risk means that regional economies may face stark differences in how they are impacted by the direct and indirect physical risks. In Europe, the world's fastest warming continent, concentrated local damages spill over asymmetrically into tightly-interconnected regional markets

Toward noninvasive estimation of nonlinear tumor stiffness from B-mode ultrasound under compression: an in silico feasibility study.

Tumor stiffness has shown promise as a biomechanical marker of malignancy. However, many elastography studies model tumors as linear elastic materials, which may not fully capture the nonlinear behavior of soft tissue. This study developed and evaluated an inverse finite-element framework for estimating nonlinear tumor stiffness from standard B-mode ultrasound images acquired during controlled compression.
Approach: Synthetic B-mode images were generated from finite-element simulations of elliptical tumors embedded in healthy tissue. Three tumor aspect ratios were considered: α = 0.35, 0.5

Prediction of an fMRI-based schizophrenia biomarker from EEG using dynamic functional connectivity: a simultaneous EEG-fMRI study.

Objective.Recent advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have identified brain functions associated with psychiatric disorders using machine-learning classifiers that serve as potential fMRI-derived biomarkers (fMRI-BMs). Resting-state fMRI functional connectivity (FC) is gaining attention as a potential target for neurofeedback (NF) therapy. However, using electroencephalography (EEG) instead of fMRI remains an important research direction for clinical implementation. Here, we propose a novel approach for estimating an fMRI-BM from EEG signals using dynamic FC (dFC) to enable

Methodological Development and Assessing Prescribing Determinants Through Cumulative Drug Exposure in Hospitalized Patients: Proof-of-Concept Retrospective Study.

BackgroundPreventing adverse drug reactions requires accurate monitoring of drug exposure throughout patient care. Conventional metrics, measured at admission or discharge, fail to capture the dynamic and cumulative nature of drug burden during hospitalization. Improving exposure assessment is essential to support clinical decision-making and medication safety. Clinical data warehouses (CDWs), which integrate detailed drug administration records, enable the retrospective reuse of hospital data to develop more granular and dynamic measures of in-hospital drug exposure.ObjectiveThis exploratory

Z‑Selective Synthesis of Trisubstituted Alkenes Bearing Allylic Tertiary Amines via Rhodium-Catalyzed Allylic Amination of 1,1-Disubstituted Fluoromethyl Trichloroacetimidates.

Z-trisubstituted alkenes serve as key pharmaceutical building blocks and essential feedstocks for the selective synthesis and modification of drug molecules. Among these compounds, Z-trisubstituted alkenes that contain allylic tertiary amines are significant due to the increased solubility, lipophilicity, and metabolic stability provided by the tertiary amines. However, controlled synthesis of Z-trisubstituted alkenes with allylic tertiary amines has proven difficult, primarily due to thermodynamic challenges associated with the Z-isomer and the synthetic difficulties of accessing allylic tert
