OBJECTIVE: Obesity-mediated cognitive impairment is increasingly known as high levels of saturated fatty acid intake and accumulation in the body. Saturated fatty acids, mainly palmitic acid (PA) is recognized as the leading cause of oxidative stress, metabolic dysregulation, and neuronal degeneration in obesity.
METHOD: The current study investigated the neuroprotective effects of syringic acid (SA) against PA-induced neuronal injury in N2a neuronal cells, as well as in a high-saturated-fat-induced obese mouse (DIO) model.
RESULT: The study demonstrated that PA significantly reduced cell vi

BACKGROUND: Lipedema is a chronic adipose tissue disorder with disproportionate fat accumulation in the extremities and is often misdiagnosed as obesity. Although women with lipedema appear to be metabolically distinct from body mass index (BMI)-matched controls, their fasting metabolism remains insufficiently characterized. We therefore aimed to define the metabolic signature of lipedema using serum NMR metabolomics and anthropometric profiling.
METHODS: We conducted a study with 24 premenopausal women with lipedema and 21 BMI-matched controls. Fasting serum samples were analyzed using NMR s

Background/Objectives: Early detection of mitochondrial disorders remains challenging due to phenotypic heterogeneity and limited access to definitive molecular diagnostics. Circulating biomarkers such as growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) and fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF-21) have emerged as potential adjunct indicators. This study evaluated the screening and stratification utility of GDF-15 and FGF-21 in individuals assessed for suspected mitochondrial disease. Methods: Archived biological specimens collected between 2016 and 2017 were analysed from 221 individuals stratified into

Brain ischemia poses a significant unmet medical need, demanding novel therapeutic approaches. Puerarin (Pue), despite its potential for treating brain disorders, suffers from poor blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability due to its low oil/water partition coefficient. To overcome this, we developed a novel ginsenoside Rh2-based liposome formulation (Rh2-Pue-LP) to enhance Pue delivery to the ischemic brain. A rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion-reperfusion (MCAO/R) was established. Neurological deficits were evaluated using the Longa scoring system 24 h post-MCAO. After seven days of

Chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), an endogenous agonist of the farnesoid X receptor, is involved in lipid homeostasis and intestinal barrier regulation. This study examined how dietary CDCA alleviates high-energy diet (HED)-induced metabolic disorders in Wenchang chickens and determined the optimal supplemental dose. A total of 525 Wenchang hens were randomly assigned to five groups: Con (basal diet), HED, and HED supplemented with 50, 100, or 200 mg/kg CDCA (≥ 98% purity). The experiment spanned 42 days. Compared with the control group, HED significantly increased abdominal fat percentage, serum

Background Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder in which cerebral glucose hypometabolism represents one of the earliest and most consistent pathological abnormalities, often preceding classical amyloid and tau pathology. Despite strong clinical evidence, the causal contribution of impaired neuronal glucose utilization to AD-related cellular alterations remains incompletely understood. Objective This study aimed to determine whether selective inhibition of neuronal glucose transport induces AD-relevant cellular stress responses, including mitochondrial dysfunctio

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by β-amyloid (Aβ) accumulation and oxidative stress, with aging being its greatest risk factor. Age-related glutathione (GSH) depletion may increase neuronal vulnerability to Aβ toxicity, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated how impaired GSH homeostasis influences Aβ-associated neuronal injury. Human SH-SY5Y cells expressing either wild-type APP695 or the familial AD-associated APPSwe/Ind mutant were subjected to GSH depletion using complementary pharmacological (buthionine sulfoxi

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is an autosomal recessive blood disorder resulting from a specific point mutation in the β-globin gene. Over half a million children are born with sickle cell anemia annually. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) velocity is an accurate predictor of the risk of stroke among children with sickle cell anemia. Unfortunately, TCD screening is not routinely done in developing countries due to limited resources. There is a need to develop a model that predicts elevated TCD velocity, utilizing routinely collected data to guide management of children with sickle cell anemia.

Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) represent the most common primary neoplasms of the anterior mediastinum, yet thymic carcinoma (TC) stands out as an exceptionally rare and biologically aggressive subtype. Unlike thymomas, TCs exhibit marked cytologic atypia, early invasive potential, and a high predisposition for extrathoracic metastasis. We report the case of a 59-year-old male who presented with a seven-month history of progressive, refractory lumbar pain and functional limitation. Initial clinical and laboratory evaluation revealed normocytic anemia, leukocytosis, elevated inflammatory marke

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, with their incidence steadily rising in recent years. Pyruvate, the end product of glycolysis, serves as a critical metabolite in cellular energy metabolism by bridging cytoplasmic glycolysis and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Its synthesis, transport, and metabolic conversion are tightly regulated by a range of enzymes and transporters, including pyruvate kinase, mitochondrial pyruvate carriers, pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, glucose transporters, and lactate dehydrogenase. Emerging evidence suggests that dysr

In this study, we explore the neuroprotective and modulatory potential of graphenic materials (GMs) in terms of the maturation of dopaminergic neurons and their capacity to counteract the cellular stress induced by toxins such as MPP+ (1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium) and Tunicamycin. We found that GMs promote significant morphological changes in neuronal cells after prolonged exposure, enhancing both differentiation and cellular adhesion. Through structural analysis, we unveiled a complex organization of GMs and a marked upregulation of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), a key marker of mature dopaminerg
