Ghrelin- and serotonin-producing gastric carcinoid.

We report the case of a 57-year-old woman with gastric carcinoid. The tumor was surgically removed and immunohistochemical investigation demonstrated a rare combination: ghrelin and serotonin in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells. The functional significance of simultaneous production of ghrelin and serotonin is not clear. It may be that an autocrine/paracrine interaction exists between these two different hormones.

Iron and ferritin deficiency in women with hypothyroidism and chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis - systematic review.

Iron is one of the essential microelements necessary for maintaining the body's homeostasis. It serves various roles, including being a crucial component in the proper structure of many enzymes and supporting the transport of oxygen and electrons. Its deficiency can lead to anaemia, which is a common clinical condition often associated with thyroid diseases. Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies, and its prevalence is strongly associated with socioeconomic status. It is the primary cause of anaemia in 42% of children and 50% of women. Importantly, iron deficiency i

The Possible Hematological Cost of Metabolic Success: Do Incretin-Based Therapies Silently Trigger Anemia?

Diabetes mellitus and obesity represent a growing global health burden with high morbidity and mortality. In the last several years, novel incretin-based therapies have been developed, and their use has risen dramatically. Beyond their proven metabolic, glycemic, cardiovascular, renal, and many other benefits, there are some observational data linking anemia development with their use. From the era of gliptins to retatrutide, in this review we tried to explore whether erythroid suppression is the hidden paradigm of advanced incretin-based therapies. Potential pathophysiological explanations in

Micronutrient status of patients with diabetic foot: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Micronutrient status encompasses a range of indicators that reflect the levels and balance of macro- and microelements, as well as vitamins within the body. These essential substances, required in minimal amounts, are crucial for supporting normal physiological processes, immune system functioning, and tissue repair. The aim of this systematic review is to summarize data on the deficiency or excess of microelements, macroelements, and vitamins in patients with diabetic foot ulcers. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: Databases were searched for studies on vitamin, macronutrie

Review of fortified food and beverage products for pregnant and lactating women and their impact on nutritional status.

Fortified beverages and supplementary foods, when given during pregnancy, have been shown to have positive effects on preventing maternal anaemia and iron deficiency. Studies show that use of micronutrient fortified supplementary foods, especially those containing milk and/or essential fatty acids during pregnancy, increase mean birthweight by around 60-73 g. A few studies have also shown that fortified supplementary foods have impacts on increasing birth length and reducing preterm delivery. Fortification levels have ranged generally from 50% to 100% of the recommended nutrient intake (RNI).

Parathyroid hormone-related protein and calcium regulation in vitamin D-deficient sea bream (Sparus auratus).

Gilthead sea bream (Sparus auratus L.) were fed a vitamin D-deficient diet for 22 weeks. Growth rate, whole body mineral pools and calcium balance were determined. Plasma parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) and calcitriol levels were assessed. Expression of mRNA for pthrp and pth1r was quantified in gills and hypophysis. Fish on vitamin D-deficient diet (D- fish) showed reduced growth and lower calcium turnover (calcium influx, efflux and accumulation rates decreased) and unaltered plasma calcium levels. Plasma calcitriol levels became undetectable, PTHrP levels decreased in the D- fis

Zinc nutritional status modifies renal osteodystrophy in uremic rats.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies from our laboratories suggested that zinc depletion reduces the circulating level of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (1,25(OH)2D, calcitriol) in calcium- and phosphorus-depleted rats with normal renal function, and rats with uremia. Since calcitriol synthesis is in part dependent on renal function, we studied levels of circulating vitamin D metabolites, PTH response, mineral balance and bone histomorphometry in animals with different zinc nutritional and renal functional status. METHODS: Fifty-eight male Sprague-Dawley rats were pair-fed zinc-replete (+) or -deplete

Effects of feeding a negative dietary cation and anion difference diet to twin-bearing Merino ewes in late gestation on parturition outcomes.

In Australia, dystocia is responsible for 53% of lamb mortalities, and calcium deficiencies may be a contributing factor. A negative dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) diet can increase calcium concentrations in sheep. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of a negative DCAD diet on metabolic state, mineral status, and parturition duration in ewes compared with those fed a positive DCAD diet. At approximately day 130 of gestation (dG), 71 twin-bearing ewes were placed in the following treatment groups; ewes receiving a positive DCAD TMR (total mixed ration; DCAD of total d

Flaxseed and mulberry extract improve trabecular bone quality in estrogen-deficient rats.

Many hormones, including estrogens, modulate bone metabolism, which plays a crucial role in maintaining bone health. Estrogen depletion, as occurs in menopause, leads to increased bone resorption and decreased formation, resulting in osteopenia/osteoporosis. This study investigates the effects of flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) and mulberry (Morus nigra L.) extracts, known for their phenolic compounds and antioxidant properties, against estrogen deficiency-induced bone loss in female Wistar rats. These extracts were administered to ovariectomized rats for 60 days. High-performance liquid chroma

Impact of intermittent fasting on micronutrient intake.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This narrative review aims to evaluate the current evidence on how intermittent fasting regimens - including alternate-day fasting (ADF) and time-restricted eating (TRE) - affect micronutrient intake in adults. RECENT FINDINGS: Several randomized controlled trials have reported reductions in the intake of key micronutrients such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, folate, vitamin C, and various B vitamins during ADF and TRE. These deficiencies are largely driven by lower total energy intake and reduced consumption of nutrient-dense foods on fasting days. While some studies fo

Malnutrition in patients with obesity: An overview perspective.

Malnutrition in patients with obesity presents a complex and often overlooked clinical challenge. Although obesity is traditionally associated with overnutrition and excessive caloric intake, it can also coincide with varying degrees of malnutrition. The etiopathogenesis of obesity is multifaceted and may arise from several factors such as poor diet quality, nutrient deficiencies despite excess calorie consumption, genetics, and metabolic abnormalities affecting nutrient absorption and utilization. Moreover, a chronic low-grade inflammatory state resulting from excess adipose tissue, commonly
