Long-term maintenance and effects of exercise in early psychosis.

AIM: The aims of this study were to examine if people with first-episode psychosis (FEP) are able to continue adhering to exercise after a supervised intervention and to explore if the benefits of exercise can be sustained. METHODS: Twenty-eight persons with FEP took part in a 10-week exercise intervention that provided each participant with twice-weekly accompaniment to exercise activities of their own choice, of whom 20 were re-assessed 6 months after the intervention. Long-term adherence to exercise was assessed, and measures of psychiatric symptoms, physical health, neurocognition and soc

NF-κB1 Haploinsufficiency Causing Immunodeficiency and EBV-Driven Lymphoproliferation.

PURPOSE: NF-κB signaling is critically important for regulation of both innate and adaptive immune responses. While activation of NF-κB has been implicated in malignancies such as leukemia and lymphoma, loss-of-function mutations affecting different NF-κB pathway components have been shown to cause primary immunodeficiency disorders. Recently, haploinsufficiency of NF-κB1 has been described in three families with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied a patient with recurrent respiratory infections and bacterial parapharyngeal abscess. Immunological investiga

Candida albicans exposures, sex specificity and cognitive deficits in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Immune aberrations in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have led to the hypotheses that infectious agents or corresponding immune responses might contribute to psychiatric etiopathogeneses. We investigated case-control differences in exposure to the opportunistic fungal pathogen, Candida albicans, and examined associations with cognition, medication, lifestyle, and somatic conditions. We quantified C. albicans IgG antibodies in two cohorts totaling 947 individuals and evaluated odds ratios (OR) of exposure with psychiatric disorder using multivariate regressions. The case-control cohort inclu

Cyclic Ozone Exposure Induces Gender-Dependent Neuropathology and Memory Decline in an Animal Model of Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major cause of dementia in the elderly. Although early-onset (familial) AD is attributed to gene mutations, the cause for late-onset (sporadic) AD, which accounts for 95% of AD cases, is unknown. In this study, we show that exposure of 6-week-old amyloid beta precursor protein (APP)/presenilin (PS1) overexpressing mice, a well-established animal model of AD, and nontransgenic littermates to a cyclic O3 exposure protocol, which mimics environmental exposure episodes, accelerated learning/memory function loss in male APP/PS1 mice but not in female APP/PS1 mice or no

Do the same factors predict outcome in schizophrenia and non-schizophrenia syndromes after first-episode psychosis? A two-year follow-up study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this two-year longitudinal study was to identify the best baseline predictors of functional outcome in first-episode psychosis (FEP). We tested whether the same factors predict functional outcomes in two different subsamples of FEP patients: schizophrenia and non-schizophrenia syndrome groups. METHODS: Ninety-five patients with FEP underwent a full clinical evaluation (i.e., PANSS, Mania, Depression and Insight). Functional outcome measurements included the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (DAS-WHO), Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) and Clinical Global Impression

Sequential evaluation of serum monocyte chemotactic protein 1 among asymptomatic state and acute exacerbation and remission of asthma in children.

BACKGROUND: Monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1) plays an important role in various immune and allergic disorders since it is a potent chemo-attractant for inflammatory cells, such as eosinophils, memory T cells, and monocytes. OBJECTIVE: To investigate serum MCP-1 during asymptomatic state and acute attacks of bronchial asthma. METHODS: In this longitudinal cohort design study, sequential serum levels of MCP-1 were measured by a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Twenty-four asthma patients' MCP-1 levels were examined at 5 time points: during the asymptomatic phase, in an

Audioverbal cognitive dysfunction in depression. Factors involved.

There is increasing evidence suggesting that depression is associated with a certain degree of cognitive dysfunction. However, there is still debate on whether this dysfunction is only substantially associated with the most severe forms of depression, on whether or not it decreases in parallel with clinical response, and on the role played in these changes by psychotropic medications. In order to clarify these questions, we analyzed the performance in several cognitive tasks that involved attention and working memory of 40 untreated subjects with a diagnosis of dysthymia or major depressive di

Home documented monitoring of cardiorespiratory pattern and oxygen saturation in healthy infants.

The objective of this study was to establish longitudinal normative limits for home memory monitors during early infancy. Eighty-eight healthy infants were monitored overnight at 0.25-19 wk of age using the Healthdyne Smart Monitor. Apnea settings were 14 s for recording and 40 s for alarm; the bradycardia setting was 50 beats/min (5-s delay) for both recording and alarm. Arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) was documented whenever an event was recorded. The monitor was used 77% of all possible days; median daily use was 8.0 h. Eighty-three percent of all monitor alarms were caused by loose leads

Gene-Environment Interaction in Transgenic Rats overexpressing human DISC1: Effects of Early Social Isolation on Behavioral Domains.

Early-life social isolation (SI) is a well-established environmental stressor associated with persistent behavioral alterations relevant to psychiatric disorders. Whether SI interacts with neurodevelopmental brain abnormalities to modify behavioral vulnerability remains unclear. We investigated the effects of post-weaning SI in transgenic rats overexpressing full-length human Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1 (tgDISC1), a model characterized by DISC1 protein aggregation, impaired dopamine homeostasis, and abnormal neuronal migration. Male wild-type (WT) and tgDISC1 rats were housed individually or

A diffusion MRI-derived perivascular metric related to glymphatic-associated processes in bipolar disorder vulnerability: Multimodal correlates across emotion dysregulation patients and offspring.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by marked emotion dysregulation and high familial risk. Identifying early biological markers of vulnerability in BD, including unaffected offspring, is critical to improve risk stratification and intervention, and glymphatic-associated processes may contribute to this vulnerability. We examined 237 participants, including 97 patients with emotion dysregulation disorders (EDD; 34 BD, 33 borderline personality disorder [BPD], 30 attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]), 67 offspring of EDD patients (EDDoff; including 23 BD offspring [BDoff]), and 73

When the Clock Shifts: A Comprehensive Review of Daylight-Saving Time (DST), Circadian Disruption, and Neuropsychological Risk in Chronic Mental Illness.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) creates abrupt, externally imposed circadian disruptions that can impair sleep regulation, hormonal balance, cognitive performance, and emotional stability. Although these effects are known in the general population, individuals with chronic mental illness, whose circadian systems are often intrinsically dysregulated, may face increased neuropsychological consequences. This comprehensive review synthesizes evidence from chronobiology, psychiatry, neuroscience, and population health to examine how DST-related circadian misalignment impacts cognitive functioning, mood

Cognitive Communication, Voice and Swallowing Difficulties Experienced by Adults With Long-COVID: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Adults with Long-COVID frequently experience impairments in cognitive-communication, voice and swallowing, however, few comprehensive reviews of the existing literature has yet to be conducted to map the current research landscape. To go some way toward addressing this gap, this scoping review collected and analysed relevant published studies to identify reported symptoms related to cognitive communication, voice and swallowing in post COVID-19 patients and the assessments used to identify these difficulties. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically map the existing literatur

Neurofunctional correlates of working memory across psychosis stages: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Working memory (WM) impairments occur across psychosis stages, but whether their neural correlates are shared or stage-specific is unknown. This meta-analysis examined WM-related brain activity across psychosis stages: familial and clinical high-risk for psychosis (at-risk), first-episode psychosis (early psychosis), and chronic schizophrenia (chronic psychosis). PubMed, Ovid, and Web of Science were searched up to February 2026 for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies comparing individuals in each stage and controls during WM. Statistical maps were requested from study authors

Non-ICANS neurotoxicities CD19-directed CAR T-cell therapy and the emergence of movement and neurocognitive treatment-emergent adverse events: a case report.

We report a 63-year-old male patient with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) who developed delayed-onset neurotoxicity on day +22 following CD19-directed CAR T-cell therapy with axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi-cel), after an initial episode of CRS and ICANS. The underlying disease had relapsed with secondary central nervous system (CNS) involvement, highlighting a high-risk setting for neurotoxicity. Unlike classical ICANS, the syndrome featured progressive gait ataxia and hypokinetic movement disturbances-clinical hallmarks of so-called movement and neurocognitive treatment-emergent adverse e

Effects of accelerated intermittent θ burst stimulation on depressive episodes and cognitive function in adolescents with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacological treatments for adolescent bipolar depression often show limited efficacy, safety, and significant side effects concerns. Accelerated intermittent theta burst stimulation (aiTBS) has shown potential in treating depressive episodes, but its application in adolescents with bipolar depression remains unclear. METHODS: Eighty-six adolescents diagnosed with bipolar depression were randomized to receive 10 sessions of active aiTBS, sham aiTBS, or high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (HF-rTMS; 10 Hz) targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (

Peripheral inflammation and neurocognitive functioning in early psychosis: Specific associations of TNF-α and IL-6 with social cognition.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits and immune system dysregulation are core features of psychotic disorders. Among inflammatory markers, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) have been linked to both psychosis pathophysiology and related cognitive impairments. METHODS: We investigated associations among IL-6, TNF-α, and neurocognitive performance in 107 participants: individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P, n = 35), first-episode psychosis (FEP, n = 39), and healthy controls (HC, n = 33). Predicting acute decompensated heart failure using circadian markers from heart rate time series.

AIMS: Hospital admissions for acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) are linked to high readmission rates, emphasizing the need for early intervention. Dysregulation of the circadian rhythm that regulates key physiological processes, such as heart rate (HR), blood pressure and sleep-wake cycles, may precede weight gain and clinical symptoms of worsening heart failure (HF) by weeks, providing a window for timely intervention. This study aims to develop a predictive algorithm for early and accurate ADHF detection. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sixty-five patients discharged after ADHF hospitalization
