Electroacupuncture for Motor Recovery in Subacute Stroke: A Randomized Trial Exploring CReST-Related Modulation.

BACKGROUND: Upper limb impairment is a common consequence of stroke, with unclear motor recovery mechanisms. Electroacupuncture (EA) has shown promise in promoting recovery, but its effects on the corticoreticulospinal tract (CReST), a key stroke rehabilitation pathway, remain underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the effects of EA on motor recovery and its potential modulation of CReST-related pathways in subacute stroke patients. METHODS: Thirty-two subacute stroke patients were randomly assigned to the EA or control group. Both groups underwent a two-week rehabilitation program, w

Neuromuscular Changes During the Six-Minute Walk Test in Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease.

Children/adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience muscle-related impairments and declines in physical function. These deficits result from chronic anemia and impaired oxygen delivery, limiting the development of safe and effective exercise-based interventions. To better understand the effects of SCD on sustained activity, this study aimed to compare the physical function of children/adolescents with SCD to normative values and evaluate changes in neuromuscular function and muscle oxygenation during the 6-min walk test (6MWT). Each child/adolescent underwent a standardized 6MWT whi

Effects of cold water immersion versus active recovery on oxidative stress, redox gene expression and mitochondrial adaptations after strength training.

We compared the acute and chronic effects of postexercise cold water immersion (CWI) and active recovery (ACT) on oxidative stress, redox-related gene expression, mitochondrial adaptations and muscle oxidative capacity. In a crossover study, nine males completed strength sessions, followed by either 10 min CWI or ACT. There were time effects for blood oxidative stress markers, including serum derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites and serum biological antioxidant potential (P < 0.05). F2-Isoprostanes were lower after exercise in the CWI trial compared with the ACT trial (P < 0.05), whereas

GC-Derived Volatile Profiling of Commercial Thyme and Oregano Labeled Products and Evaluation of Portable NIR Screening.

Commercial aromatic herbs sold under the names thyme and oregano may encompass heterogeneous plant materials, making chemical-profile screening important even when botanical identity is unknown. This study characterized 110 commercial products marketed in Türkiye and evaluated whether portable near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy could predict chemical-profile classes derived independently from GC-FID/MS data. Commercial labels were recorded but were not treated as verified species identities. Essential oils were measured in technical duplicate for 23 volatile compounds; replicate means were subje

A Non-Invasive Combined Photothermal-Sonodynamic Therapy Using a Dual-Activated TiO2-Au Nanohybrid: A Competitive Alternative to the Invasive Radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Conventional radiotherapy (RT) is widely used to treat breast cancer (BC), although its use has been limited by ionizing damage and low repeatability. This study proposes a dual-activated, non-ionizing treatment strategy using TiO2-Au nanohybrids (NHs), triggered by near-infrared (NIR) light and ultrasound (US), to induce synergistic sonodynamic-photothermal therapy (SDPTT) as a minimally invasive alternative with therapeutic efficacy comparable to conventional radiotherapy (RT). METHODS: TiO2-Au NHs were synthesized and thoroughly characterized using FESEM, TEM, UV-vis spectrosco

Adaptive conditional diffusion-based data augmentation for NIR spectroscopy quantitative analysis under limited labeled samples.

Accurate quantification of key chemical constituents is critical for quality control in food and pharmaceutical products, yet conventional analytical methods are often destructive, time-consuming, and costly. Combining near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy with deep learning shows strong potential for quantitative regression. However, labeled spectra typically require expensive, labor-intensive reference assays, resulting in limited training data that constrain model training, generalization, and real-world deployment. Although data augmentation can mitigate small-sample issues, existing generative

Particle-size-coupled tracing (PSCT): A source-size classification framework for sediment source apportionment under particle sorting.

Reliable apportionment of sediment sources is an important prerequisite for understanding sediment dynamics and can support future assessment of sediment-associated non-point source pollution and catchment water-quality management. However, hydrodynamic particle sorting during erosion and transport disrupts tracer conservativeness, thereby reducing sediment source fingerprinting accuracy. To address this issue, we developed and evaluated a particle-size-coupled tracing (PSCT) framework that explicitly embeds particle-size classes into source classification to reconstruct source-sediment compar

Autoregulation-Guided Blood Pressure Targets After Stroke Thrombectomy: Impact on Secondary Brain Injury and Neurologic Outcomes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The optimal blood pressure (BP) target after endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) remains elusive. The aim of our study was to assess the relationship between individualized autoregulation-based BP thresholds, secondary brain injury, and functional outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study of patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent EVT. Simultaneous recordings of arterial BP and near-infrared spectroscopy were used to continuously monitor each patient's limits of autoregulation for up to 24 hours. Time outside limits of autoregulation wa

Balance of non-Lp(a) apoB and Lp(a) with Coronary Plaque Phenotypes and MACE: Insights from PROSPECT II and CASABLANCA.

AIMS: Apolipoprotein B (apoB)-containing lipoproteins contribute heterogeneously to atherosclerosis. While apoB particles are major determinants of plaque burden, Lp(a) has been linked to plaque inflammation and instability. We investigated the associations of non-Lp(a) apoB, Lp(a), and their relative balance with coronary plaque burden and vulnerability. METHODS AND RESULTS: Among 854 patients with recent myocardial infarction enrolled in the PROSPECT II near-infrared spectroscopy-intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) study, total apoB was converted to nmol/L and non-Lp(a) apoB calculated by

Age-related cortical mechanisms underlying postural control: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Despite growing interest in age-related cortical mechanisms of postural control, heterogeneity across studies has limited the synthesis of existing evidence. This systematic review aimed to (1) characterize age-related alterations in cortical activity during standing balance tasks with sensory, cognitive, and mechanical challenges; (2) examine the association between cortical activity and postural sway; and (3) characterize the current methodology of assessing cortical activity during standing balance tasks in older adults (OA). METHODS: Relevant research articles were identifie

Effects of vasopressor dose on microcirculation despite preserved macrohemodynamic targets in septic shock: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Septic shock may be complicated by hemodynamic incoherence, in which macrohemodynamic targets are achieved despite persistent microcirculatory alterations. Whether norepinephrine requirement is associated with dynamic microvascular reactivity after initial resuscitation, and whether central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) reflects this microvascular reserve, remains uncertain. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 30 mechanically ventilated adults with septic shock receiving vasopressor therapy. Thenar near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) vascular occlusion testing

Photothermal performance of Nb2CTx and Ti3C2Tx MXenes for antibacterial and in vitro cytotoxicity.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) has emerged as a noninvasive strategy for treating cancer and infectious diseases through near-infrared (NIR)-induced localized hyperthermia. MXenes, a family of two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, have recently attracted considerable attention owing to their ultrahigh photothermal conversion efficiency. Herein, Nb2CTx and Ti3C2Tx were synthesized via hydrothermal and MILD methods, respectively. Their crystallinity and thermal stability were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). UV-Vis-N

Precision Drug Delivery of LY-11h for Acute Myeloid Leukemia Treatment Using Machine Learning-Assisted Hot Melt Extrusion and 3D-Printed Technologies.

Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterogeneous and aggressive hematologic malignancy, and LY-11h is a novel acylhydrazide-based histone deacetylase inhibitor with promising therapeutic potential for AML. However, its poor aqueous solubility, limited intestinal dissolution, and narrow therapeutic window hinder oral formulation development and motivate the development of dosage forms with flexible dose-design capabilities. Herein, an integrated hot-melt extrusion (HME)-fused deposition modeling (FDM) strategy was developed to convert LY-11h into printable amorphous solid dispersion

Robo2-Nrxn3 Deficiency: A Molecular Hub Linking Excitation-Inhibition Imbalance to the Pathogenesis of Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Schizophrenia (SZ) is characterized by excitation-inhibition (E-I) imbalance as a core pathophysiological feature, but its molecular underpinnings remain elusive. Susceptibility gene Roundabout2 (Robo2), which regulates E-I balance in the central nervous system, may play a critical role in the pathogenesis of SZ by contributing to this dysregulation. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a transcriptomic analysis of Robo2 in postmortem brain tissues from patients with SZ and controls using the GEO/GSE datasets. The plasma levels of Robo2 were quantified in clinical cohorts via

Intraoperative Hemodynamic Management and Cerebral Protection During Awake Craniotomy: Evidence-Based Approaches.

Awake craniotomy is a standard neurosurgical technique that enables real-time assessment of brain functions during tumor resection, with high success rates. Although highly effective, the procedure is associated with hemodynamic disturbances, including blood pressure variability and impaired cerebral perfusion, compromising intraoperative safety. A focused literature search of PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar was performed to identify relevant studies on intraoperative hemodynamic management during awake craniotomy. Findings were synthesized narratively to summarize current evidence, highlig

Prefrontal hemodynamic alterations during resting state and stroop interference in cognitively healthy older adults with high plasma pTau-217 levels.

Plasma phosphorylated tau-217 (pTau-217) has emerged as a sensitive biomarker for early Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, including the cognitively healthy (CH) stage when compensatory frontal activity has been reported. This study focused on hemodynamic changes measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in CH older adults. The fNIRS data from 41 CH older adults during resting state, as well as during a color-word Stroop interference task were analyzed. Primary measures included oxyhemoglobin (HbO) responses at left lateral, left medium, right
