OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the rate of multiple pregnancies in intrauterine insemination cycles stimulated with a minimal dose of recombinant follicle stimulating hormone (rec-FSH).
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
SETTING: University Medical Center.
POPULATION: A total of 1256 patients underwent 3219 consequent intrauterine insemination cycles with minimal ovarian stimulation.

Huntington's disease (HD) and Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA) are associated with defects of respiratory-chain enzyme activities. In the respective disorders, these can be identified in tissue samples from postmortem brain and also during life from skeletal or cardiac muscle samples. The mitochondrial abnormalities are robust and reproducible. In the case of HD, it is uncertain how these mitochondrial defects fit in the pathogenetic cascade. BACKGROUND: In Aspergillus nidulans, the transcription activator AlcR mediates specific induction of a number of the genes of the alc cluster. This paper describes the 5 years' experience of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) at the Brussels Free University. Our first PGD was carried out in February 1993. Up to October 1998, we carried out 183 PGD cycles on fresh cleavage embryos of 92 couples for 25 different conditions.
