OBJECTIVES: Pre-existing pathology of the urogenital system may interfere with the pathophysiology of trauma, alter the radiographic imaging and influence the way of therapeutic approach. The aim of our study was to record the pathological lesions of the urogenital tract found incidentally during evaluation for blunt renal trauma and subsequently comment on their importance.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The files of 675 patients referred to our department from 1982 to 1998 for further evaluation of possible blunt renal injury were reviewed. Our standard procedure is to perform an ultrasonogram and i

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study is to assess whether a supratherapeutic international normalized ratio (INR) is associated with an increased risk of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) in geriatric ED patients prescribed preinjury warfarin that suffer head trauma.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective study of geriatric head trauma patients presenting to two EDs over a one-year period. Geriatric ED patients presenting with a head injury were enrolled. Inclusion criteria were patients who sustained a ground level fall. Exclusion criteria were patients taking non-warfarin anticoagul

Traumatic venous injuries are associated with high mortality rates. When they involve the inferior vena cava and iliac veins, prompt treatment is necessary in cases of patient instability. Endovascular treatment of a traumatic injury at the iliac confluence extending to the proximal external iliac vein was performed in a 50-year-old patient following a fall. A GORE Excluder PLC141400 endograft was placed at the bleeding site via percutaneous transfemoral access, combined with simultaneous embolization of the internal iliac vein through right percutaneous jugular access. Effective haemostasis w

It is important for patients and clinicians to know the potential for recovery from concussion as soon as possible after injury, especially in patients who do not recover completely in the first month and have concussion with persisting concussion symptoms (C+PCS). We assessed the association between the causes of concussion and recovery from C+PCS in a consecutive retrospective and prospective cohort of 600 patients referred to the Canadian Concussion Center (CCC) at Toronto Western Hospital. Data were obtained from clinical records and follow-up questionnaires and not from a standardized dat

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Most published articles regarding orthopedic- and trauma-related femoral artery pseudoaneurysms (FAPs) are case reports in English. Reported cases are often associated with a literature review but actually provide little robust data. We wanted to summarize the current knowledge on diagnostic and therapeutic features of these FAPs.
METHODS: A new case of superficial FAP is described followed by a review of the literature. A bibliographic search was performed online (PubMed, ScinceDirect) from 1964 to 2015 using the descriptors "traumatic femoral pseudoaneurysm, orthoped

Achilles injury is a common musculoskeletal disorder. Bilateral rupture of the Achilles tendon, however, is much less common and usually occurs spontaneously. Complete, traumatic, and bilateral ruptures are rare and typically require long periods of immobilization before the patient can return to full weightbearing. A 52-year-old male was hospitalized for bilateral traumatic rupture to both Achilles tendons. No risk factors for tendon rupture were found. Blood samples revealed no peripheral blood pathologic features. Both tendons were repaired with percutaneous, minimally invasive surgery usin

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for falling among individuals aging with multiple sclerosis (MS), muscular dystrophy (MD), postpolio syndrome (PPS), and spinal cord injury (SCI).
DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey data from 2009 to 2010 were analyzed. We used forward logistic regression models to examine whether risk factors such as age, sex, mobility level, years since diagnosis, vision, balance, weakness, number of comorbid conditions, and physical activity could distinguish participants who reported falling from those who did not.
SETTING: Surveys were mailed to c

A 50-year-old male patient sustained a supination-adduction type ankle fracture with an associated sagittal split fracture of the talus. The patient was treated initially in a short leg splint, and upon presentation to an orthopaedic surgeon, an external fixator was applied. After the soft tissue swelling improved enough to permit open reduction and internal fixation, the patient was brought back to the operating room for definitive treatment with removal of the external fixator and open reduction and placement of internal fixation. The patient's postoperative course was uncomplicated. At the

BACKGROUND: No Australian population-based studies have examined temporal trends in the incidence of fracture of the first or second cervical vertebra (C1 or C2 fractures), their aetiology, treatment and outcome for younger (15-64 years) compared to older (65+ years) individuals. The aim of this research is to examine the circumstances, treatment and outcomes including mortality for C1 or C2 fractures without associated spinal cord injury by age group in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
METHOD: A retrospective review of C1 or C2 vertebra fractures in individuals aged 15 years and over in the

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury is of particular concern in the older population. We aimed to examine the trends in hospitalisations, causes and consequences of TBI in older adults in New South Wales, Australia.
METHODS: TBI cases from 1 July 1998 to 30 June 2011 were identified from hospitalisation data for all public and private hospitals in NSW. Direct aged standardised admission rates were calculated. Negative binomial regression modelling was used to examine the statistical significance of changes in trend over time.
RESULTS: There were 12,564 hospitalisations for TBI over the 13 y

We report a case of traumatic axial disruption of the radial mid carpal joint. This unusual type of scaphotrapezo-trapezoïdal dislocation occurred after falling from a height. We performed open reduction and wire fixation. At 12months follow-up, functional outcome was satisfactory with good muscle strength (clamping force, grip strength and pinch grip: 90% compared to the opposite side) and good range of motion was preserved. Work was resumed at the tenth week. Radial midcarpal disruption is uncommon. It includes the separation of the trapezium, trapezoïdal, first and second and third metacarp

INTRODUCTION: Occupational accidents suffered by workers in Spain when using ladders were analyzed over a six year period from 2003-2008, during which the total of notified ladder-related accidents amounted to 21,725.
METHOD: Different accident-related factors were identified for the purpose of developing a pattern of those factors that had the greatest influence on the seriousness and the fatality of such accidents. Thus, a series of variables were examined such as age and length of service of the injured worker, firm size, the work sector, the injury suffered, and the part of the body that

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of acute orthopedic dislocations is poorly understood. A nationwide database provides a valuable resource for examining this issue in the Taiwanese population.
METHODS: A 6-year retrospective cohort study of 1,000,000 randomly-sampled beneficiaries from the year 2005 was used as the original population. Based on the hospitalized and ambulatory data, the concomitant ICD9-CM diagnosis codes and treatment codes were evaluated and classified into 8 and 3 major categories, respectively. The cases matching both inclusive criteria of dislocation-related diagnosis codes a

Late failure of microsurgical flaps is a rare event and it has been reported as a consequence of compression of the vascular pedicle or late infection. We report a case of late partial failure occurring 3 weeks post-operatively which was shown by vascular imaging to be caused by a previously unidentified complete occlusion of the right external iliac artery. After successful vascular bypass surgery, the suffering flap developed granulation tissue and was skin grafted. In patients carrying multiple risk factors for peripheral vascular disease, the risk of proximal vessel occlusion as a cause of

A 38-year-old man presented with pain in the left shoulder following a fall. A rotator cuff tear was suspected but roentgenograms revealed a lytic, expanded, multiseptate lesion of the scapula adjacent to glenoid. This was compatible with a giant cell tumor, aneurysmal bone cyst or simple bone cyst. The MRI showed rim enhancement and clinched the diagnosis of simple bone cyst. An infraspinous approach to scapula was undertaken and open biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of simple bone cyst. Definitive treatment in the form of curettage and calcium phosphate cementation was carried out. The postope

The principal aims of this retrospective study were to assess the prevalence and causes of laryngo-hyoid fractures found in coroners' adult postmortem examinations over a five-year period. In 78 of 1930 cases (4%), there was a fracture of the larynx (thyroid or cricoid cartilage) or hyoid bone. The thyroid cartilage alone was fractured in 38 cases; the hyoid bone alone was fractured in 19 cases; the larynx and hyoid bone were both fractured in 21 cases, including one which involved the cricoid cartilage. There was no evidence of surface injury to the neck in 14.1% of cases. The majority (44/78

Anecdotal reports when a temporary ice-rink opened in Winchester, suggested a burden on the Emergency Department (ED) and Trauma & Orthopaedic (T&O) services. This study was undertaken to assess, prospectively, the workload created as a consequence of ice-rink injuries, when the facility was reopened over Christmas 2007. All patients attending from the ice-rink were included and their injuries reviewed. Costs of care were calculated based on ED attendance, out-patient appointments (OPA's), radiography, plaster immobilisation and government tariffs for surgical procedures. The ice-rink was open

We report the case of a 36-year-old man who underwent neurosurgery for a T9 spine fracture consecutive to a fall. The patient had complete postoperative blindness which did not totally recover during the hospital stay. Decreased visual acuity and postoperative vision loss are not uncommon in spine surgery. Such postoperative complications in spine surgery are severe. To avoid them, it is mandatory to identify the contributing factors and set up a preventive strategy.

Segmental forearm fractures are rare in children, and management is controversial. Epiphyseal injuries further complicate matters. We report the case of a 15-year-old boy who had segmental radius and ulna fractures with a coronal split of a metaphyseal fragment, along with bilateral epiphyseal fractures of the distal radius and ulna as well as ipsilateral scaphocapitate fractures with perilunate dislocation. There was also a contralateral fracture through the radial neck. The patient underwent immediate internal fixation of the forearm fractures and delayed fixation of the scaphocapitate fract
