Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in rivers of southern India: Spatial distribution, sources, and ecotoxicological and human health risk assessments.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely used in diverse industrial and consumer applications. In this study, we investigated 16 PFASs in waters along urban and suburban/rural transects of seven major rivers in southern India. The selected PFASs were analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The mean ∑16PFAS concentration in river water along the urban transect (96.9 ± 84.8 ng/L) was about sevenfold higher than that in the suburban/rural transect (13.5 ± 22.2 ng/L). Source apportionment using compositional profiles, statistical models, and diagnost

Autoantibodies in systemic sclerosis display a proinflammatory Fc glycosylation signature independent of systemic inflammation.

Reduced IgG Fc galactosylation, reflected by elevated agalactosylated (G0) glycoforms, is a hallmark of autoimmune diseases and correlates with systemic inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Whether similar glycosylation alterations occur in disease-specific autoantibodies in the absence of systemic inflammation remains unknown. IgG Fc glycosylation was analyzed in systemic sclerosis (SSc), a disease characterized by fibrosis, vasculopathy, and autoimmunity rather than overt systemic inflammation. Anti-centromere protein B antibody-posi

Extraction, Purification of C‑Glycosides from Arisaema decipiens for Studying its Anti-Inflammatory and Bioactivities.

Arisaema decipiens-(A. decipiens), a traditional Chinese folk medicine, is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In this study, we report the extraction, purification, and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of C-glycosides from A. decipiens (ADCG). We developed an integrated strategy for the efficient enrichment and identification of polar C-glycosides from A. decipiens. Sample pretreatment via freeze-drying preserved thermolabile constituents, and reflux extraction with 60% aqueous ethanol optimized polar compound recovery. A key innovation was the implementation of a repea

Ceramide-rich extracellular vesicles as pathogenic biomarkers in traumatic brain injury.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) contribute to the damage caused by traumatic brain injury (TBI) and can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). We analyzed plasma-derived EVs from human TBI patients to identify factors potentially contributing to TBI pathology. EVs were isolated using membrane affinity (ExoEasy) and size exclusion chromatography, both yielding CD9(+) and CD63(+) EVs with minimal contamination by serum albumin and apolipoprotein. Immunoblotting detected GFAP in TBI but not control EVs, indicating astrocyte-derived EVs crossing the BBB. Proteomic analysis and immunoblotting of EVs fro

Flavonoid-mediated inhibition of ovarian glutathione S-transferase in Schistocerca gregaria: Biochemical characterization and in vitro evaluation.

The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, remains one of the most destructive agricultural pests, posing a serious threat to crop production and food security. Current control strategies rely heavily on synthetic insecticides, raising concerns about environmental contamination and the development of insecticide resistance. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are major phase II detoxification enzymes involved in xenobiotic metabolism and insecticide tolerance; however, their physiological role in reproductive tissues remains poorly understood. This study aimed to purify and characterize ovarian G

Multi-modal comparison of molecular programs driving nurse cell death and clearance in Drosophila melanogaster oogenesis.

The death and clearance of nurse cells is a consequential milestone in Drosophila melanogaster oogenesis. In preparation for oviposition, the germline-derived nurse cells bequeath to the developing oocyte all their cytoplasmic contents and undergo programmed cell death. The death of the nurse cells is controlled non-autonomously and is precipitated by epithelial follicle cells of somatic origin acquiring a squamous morphology and acidifying the nurse cells externally. Alternatively, stressors such as starvation can induce the death of nurse cells earlier in mid-oogenesis, manifesting apoptosis

Determination of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in water samples using a graphene oxide/Fe3O4/polyoxometalate composite as a sorbent.

The detection of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in water samples is of critical importance due to their adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems, including toxicity to fish and invertebrates, and the potential risks to human health through contaminated drinking water sources. Precisely monitoring their content is crucial yet difficult due to their complex matrix and trace concentrations. This study presents a magnetic tri-component composite that was prepared based on immobilized Keggin-type polyoxometalate (H4SiW12O40 (SiW)) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles on graphene oxide (GO) sheets (G

A Cross-Sectional Exploratory Study of Cardiovascular Risk Biomarkers in Non-Obese Women with and without Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Association with Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is proposed to have a protective effect against cardiovascular disease, though the mechanism is unclear. Vitamin D deficiency is common in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where it is strongly related to obesity, insulin resistance (IR) and risk of cardiovascular disease. To determine if the inherent pathophysiology of PCOS or vitamin D levels are linked to dysregulation of cardiovascular risk proteins (CVRPs), a study in non-obese women with PCOS and without IR was undertaken. Our hypothesis was that the levels of vitamin D3 and its active metabolite would be associated with CVRPs
