Management of condyloma acuminatum.

This article describes an approach to the evaluation and treatment of condyloma acuminatum (anogenital warts) that is based on the results of new clinical research on the biology of the human papillomavirus. A more extensive diagnostic protocol, including routine cervicovaginal examination and Papanicolaou smear, is proposed for female patients because of the close association of genital human papillomavirus infections with cervical carcinoma. Two highly effective therapies, cryosurgery and carbon dioxide laser photocoagulation, are described and compared with older regimens. Recent developmen

The use of the carbon dioxide laser in the management of condyloma acuminatum with eight-year follow-up.

This paper relates our comprehensive treatment and follow-up of 242 women with condyloma acuminatum over an 8-year period. Laser treatments were carried out at an average power density of 800 W/cm2. Thirty-five patients received a general anesthetic prior to treatment. All other patients were treated in the outpatient clinic. The majority of patients had multiple involvements: 38% had condyloma acuminatum located on the cervix, vulva, and vagina. All of the patients had at least 1 disease-free year following treatment(s) with the carbon dioxide laser; 65% of those treated had at least 2 diseas

High-risk human papillomavirus infection in the prediction of poor treatment response and disease recurrence in patients with vulvovaginal condyloma.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the predictive factors for progression and recurrence of vulvovaginal condyloma (VVC), with a specific focus on high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infections. METHODS: Retrospective data were collected from 48 patients who were diagnosed with VVC and treated with topical trichloroacetic acid application or laser therapy during 2003-2014 at a hospital in South Korea. The diagnoses were made based on the presence of exophytic condylomatous lesions as assessed by direct visual inspection regardless of whether a biopsy was performed. RESULTS: Overall, 18 patients (50.0% of those with

Comparison of risk factors for prevalent sexually transmitted infections based on attendees at two genitourinary medicine clinics in Ireland.

Little has changed in sexually transmitted infection (STI) epidemiology in Ireland since 2000. Three STIs comprise approximately 90% of notifications; ano-genital warts, Chlamydia trachomatis and non-specific urethritis. Our objective was to compare the risk factors for prevalent STIs in attendees at two genitourinary medicine clinics and examine the incidence of coinfection. Diagnostic, demographic and behavioural information on attendees at two clinics in southwest Ireland were collected from January 1999 to July 2009. Risk factors associated with first episodes of ano-genital warts, genital

Impact of human papillomavirus-related lesions on quality of life: a multicenter hospital-based study of women in Mainland China.

INTRODUCTION: To date, few studies using a human papillomavirus (HPV)-specific questionnaire have focused on the impact of quality of life (QoL) among women with HPV-related lesions in developing countries. METHODS: A multicenter, hospital-based survey was conducted from 2007 to 2008. Women 18 to 65 years old who had HPV-related lesions or underwent HPV-related screening interventions during the past 3 months were recruited and divided into 6 groups based on different diagnoses: (1) normal Papanicolaou (Pap) test result, (2) abnormal Pap test result without HPV test, (3) external genital wart

Warty-basaloid carcinoma: clinicopathological features of a distinctive penile neoplasm. Report of 45 cases.

Most penile cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, but there are several subtypes with different clinicopathologic, viral, and outcome features. We are presenting 45 cases of a distinctive morphological variant of penile squamous cell carcinoma composed of mixed features of warty and basaloid carcinomas. This tumor was earlier recognized in a recent viral study and showed a high association with human papillomavirus infection. However, clinicopathologic features are not well known. In this multi-institutional study, patients' mean age was 62 years. Most tumors (64%) invaded multiple anatomical

[Condyloma acuminatum].

Condyloma acuminatum is a sexually transmitted disease caused by human papillomavirus infection, especially HPV DNA types 6 and 11. Its appearance is distinctively papillary and it can be diagnosed by careful observation of its particular appearance. The treatment for condyloma acuminatum is generally classified into surgical and medical therapies. In Japan, imiquimod has finally been approved and can be prescribed in the clinical situation. Treatment with 5% imiquimod cream is highly effective and noninvasive compared with surgical therapy. We anticipate that imiquimod will contribute to effi

Expression of Foxp3+CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells and Th1/Th2, Tc1/Tc2 profiles in the peripheral blood of patients with condyloma acuminatum.

BACKGROUND: Condyloma acuminatum (CA) is a disease that appears as proliferative lesions of the genital epithelium caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The balance between type 1 and type 2 T-cell subsets in patients with CA is thought to modulate antiviral immunity. CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) inhibit proliferation and cytokine production by both T-helper (Th)1 and Th2 cells and reversibly suppress CTL-mediated immunity. A better understanding of the mechanisms of T-cell regulation in CA might help in developing more effective therapeutic strategies. Objective. To evaluate

[Frequent and rare dermatological diseases in HIV patients].

HIV patients develop a variety of infectious and non-infectious diseases of the skin and mucous membranes. Some of these serve as indicator diseases for a weakening immune system. While none of the dermatological complications is pathognomonic, conditions such as oral hairy leukoplakia, herpes zoster, thrush, and eosinophilic folliculitis should make physicians consider the possibility of underlying HIV disease. Moreover, one has to consider HIV if these skin diseases take an atypical or severe course, or if they do not respond properly to appropriate medication. Frequent and rare dermatoses o

Construction and immunogenicity of human papillomavirus type 6b L1 recombinant plasmid.

OBJECTIVE: To construct a DNA vaccine as a prophylactic model to prevent condyloma acuminatum and detect its immunogenicity in mice. METHODS: The major capsid protein (L1) gene of human papillomavirus (HPV) 6b was inserted into an eukaryotic expression plasmid (pcDNA3.1). The recombinant plasmid was transfected into COS-7 cells. Western blot were performed to detect whether L1 protein can be expressed in eukaryotic cells. Eighteen female BALB/c mice were tested for immunogenicity study. RESULTS: The recombinant plasmid (pcDNA3.1-HPV6bL1) was verified as HPV6b L1 gene by sequencing. Western b

Condyloma in pregnancy is strongly predictive of juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the risk of juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis conferred by a maternal history of genital warts in pregnancy, and to identify additional cofactors such as the method of delivery (cesarean versus vaginal) and procedures or complications during pregnancy. METHODS: A retrospective cohort design was used to evaluate maternal and infant characteristics associated with respiratory papillomatosis among Danish births between 1974 and 1993. Using data from Danish registries, we identified 3033 births with a maternal history of genital warts during pregnancy. Fifty
