Protective efficacy of isometamidium chloride and diminazene aceturate against natural Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma vivax infections in cattle under a suppressed tsetse population in Uganda.

The protective efficacy of isometamidium chloride (ISMM) and diminazene aceturate (DIM) against Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma vivax infections in cattle under a suppressed tsetse population was assessed in southeast Uganda. A total of 66 and 57 trypanosome-infected cattle were treated with ISMM and DIM, respectively together with 177 trypanosome-free animals not treated were followed for 12 months, checked every 4 weeks. There was no statistical difference in the mean time to infection with any trypanosome species in animals treated with ISMM or DIM. However, the m

Dengue viral infections.

Dengue viral infections are one of the most important mosquito borne diseases in the world. They may be asymptomatic or may give rise to undifferentiated fever, dengue fever, dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), or dengue shock syndrome. Annually, 100 million cases of dengue fever and half a million cases of DHF occur worldwide. Ninety percent of DHF subjects are children less than 15 years of age. At present, dengue is endemic in 112 countries in the world. No vaccine is available for preventing this disease. Early recognition and prompt initiation of appropriate treatment are vital if disease re

[Malaria transmission in 1999 in the rice field area of the Kou Valley (Bama), (Burkina Faso)].

A longitudinal study based on mosquitoes sampled by larvae prospecting and adult catches on humans was carried out during 1999 in the rice field area of the Kou Valley (South-West Burkina Faso) to evaluate the malaria transmission level. Two sites were studied: VK5 located in the rice field centre and VK7 in the periphery. Irrigation is sub-permanent and two crops are grown each year: from February to June during the dry season and from July to November during the rainy season. A man sleeping in VK5 without any protection is exposed to more than 60,000 mosquito bites/year. Two majors vectors a

[Geographic approach in malaria control in the central highlands of Madagascar].

Following the severe malaria outbreak in the central highlands in Madagascar in 1986, a vector control program by use DDT pm 75 house-spraying has been implemented to operate in areas located at altitudes between 1000 and 1500 m. Early treatment with chloroquine has also been incorporated in the control program. To detect areas at particular high risk for malaria outbreak the Geographic Information System (GIS) has been applied and tested. The study has shown that the system can be used in malaria surveillance in order to identify areas in which an intense distribution of Anopheles funestus ca

Lessons learned, challenges and outlooks for decision-making after a decade of experience monitoring the impact of indoor residual spraying in Benin, West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Since 2008, Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) has been performed in Benin in 19 districts, including 4 in southern Benin, 9 in Atacora, and 8 in Atacora, Alibori and Donga in northern Benin. However, Benin still struggles with questions about IRS cost-benefit and epidemiological impact. Lessons learned and challenges from 10 years of IRS in Benin to be shared with the stakeholders involved in vector control implementation for decision-making. METHODS: Entomological parameters have been assessed entomological parameters in IRS communes since 2008. In all IRS intervention communes, dec

Natural Wolbachia infection in field-collected Anopheles and other mosquito species from Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: The endosymbiont bacterium Wolbachia is maternally inherited and naturally infects some filarial nematodes and a diverse range of arthropods, including mosquito vectors responsible for disease transmission in humans. Previously, it has been found infecting most mosquito species but absent in Anopheles and Aedes aegypti. However, recently these two mosquito species were found to be naturally infected with Wolbachia. We report here the extent of Wolbachia infections in field-collected mosquitoes from Malaysia based on PCR amplification of the Wolbachia wsp and 16S rRNA genes. METHOD

Community acceptance of tsetse control baits: a qualitative study in Arua District, North West Uganda.

BACKGROUND: There is renewed vigour in efforts to eliminate neglected tropical diseases including sleeping sickness (human African trypanosomiasis or HAT), including attempts to develop more cost-effective methods of tsetse control. In the West Nile region of Uganda, newly designed insecticide-treated targets are being deployed over an area of ∼500 km(2). The operational area covers villages where tsetse control has not been conducted previously. The effectiveness of the targets will depend, in part, on their acceptance by the local community. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We assessed knowl

Human antibody response to Anopheles gambiae saliva: an immuno-epidemiological biomarker to evaluate the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets in malaria vector control.

For the fight against malaria, the World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the need for indicators to evaluate the efficacy of vector-control strategies. This study investigates a potential immunological marker, based on human antibody responses to Anopheles saliva, as a new indicator to evaluate the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). Parasitological, entomological, and immunological assessments were carried out in children and adults from a malaria-endemic region of Angola before and after the introduction of ITNs. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels to An. gambiae saliva were posi

Delinquent mortgages, neglected swimming pools, and West Nile virus, California.

Adjustable rate mortgages and the downturn in the California housing market caused a 300% increase in notices of delinquency in Bakersfield, Kern County. This led to large numbers of neglected swimming pools, which were associated with a 276% increase in the number of human West Nile virus cases during the summer of 2007.

Horse-, bird-, and human-seeking behavior and seasonal abundance of mosquitoes in a West Nile virus focus of southern France.

After 35 yr of disease absence, West Nile virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus, WNV) circulation has been regularly detected in the Camargue region (southern France) since 2000. WNV was isolated from Culex modestus Ficalbi, which was considered the main vector in southern France after horse outbreaks in the 1960s. Recent WNV transmissions outside of the Cx. modestus distribution suggested the existence of other vectors. To study potential WNV vectors, horse- and bird-baited traps and human landing collections of mosquitoes were carried out weekly from May to October 2004 at two Camargu

An alternative focus in strategic research on disease vectors: the potential of genetically modified non-biting mosquitoes.

We examine the constraints and the feasibility of field experiments involving the release of genetically modified (GM) pathogen-resistant mosquitoes, and whether there are alternatives to the research line based on the production of refractory strains. The production of a GM mosquito strain characterized instead by obligate primiparous and parous autogeny and by disrupted host seeking and biting behaviour could make the release more acceptable by the general public. Genetic transformation should act in this case to reverse some of the essential steps of the evolutionary process that gave rise

West Nile virus in livestock and wildlife.

WN virus is one of the most ubiquitous arboviruses occurring over a broad geographical range and in a wide diversity of vertebrate host and vector species. The virus appears to be maintained in endemic foci on the African continent and is transported annually to temperate climates to the north in Europe and to the south in South Africa. Reports of clinical disease due to natural WN virus infection in wild or domestic animals were much less common than reports of infection (virus isolation or antibody detection). Until recently, records of morbidity and mortality in wild birds were confined to

Malaria control in central Malaita, Solomon Islands. 1. The use of insecticide-impregnated bed nets.

The present study investigated the use of insecticide-impregnated bed nets by communities in central Malaita, Solomon Islands. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected by: (1) questionnaire administration to 124 care-givers of children aged 0-10 years of age; (2) 20 focus group discussions; (3) two structured observations of bed net re-impregnation, and (4) interviews with key informants. Ninety-four percent of all care-givers had bed nets, but only 62% had sufficient bed nets for all household members. Fifty-two percent used bed nets throughout the year and 70% of care-givers reported

West Nile virus in the United States: guidelines for detection, prevention, and control.

The epidemic/epizootic of West Nile (WN) encephalitis in the northeastern United States in the summer and fall of 1999 was an unprecedented event, underscoring the ease with which emerging infectious pathogens can be introduced into new geographic areas in today's era of rapid transportation and increased movement of people, animals, and commodities. This epidemic/epizootic and the increased frequency of other exotic pathogens being imported into the United States raises the issue of whether local, state, and national public health agencies are prepared to deal with epidemics/epizootics of vec

Control of endophagic Anopheles mosquitoes and human malaria in Guinea Bissau, West Africa by permethrin-treated bed nets.

We compared the anti-mosquito and antimalarial potentialities of placebo-treated versus permethrin-impregnated bed nets in north-western Guinea Bissau. Baseline, pre-intervention entomological and parasitological data were collected during the rainy season of 1990 and bed nets were distributed shortly before the rainy season of 1991. Pairs of 3 ethnically different villages were investigated. The villages in each pair were at least 2 km apart but belonged to the same ethnic group in an ecologically similar area. After one year permethrin-treated bed nets were provided to all people in one vill

Mapping tsetse fly connectivity in Uganda with machine learning landscape genetics.

INTRODUCTION: Tsetse flies (genus Glossina ) are biting insects that transmit human and animal trypanosomiases across sub-Saharan Africa, and sustainable vector control depends on understanding dispersal barriers and reinvasion routes. Despite major progress toward elimination, Uganda remains at risk for both human forms of the disease ( Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and T. b. rhodesiense ) and planners still lack reliable maps of tsetse movement and reinvasion risk. METHODS AND RESULTS: We address this gap with machine-learning landscape genetics and species distribution models, integrating e

Comparative genomic analysis of six Glossina genomes, vectors of African trypanosomes.

BACKGROUND: Tsetse flies (Glossina sp.) are the vectors of human and animal trypanosomiasis throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Tsetse flies are distinguished from other Diptera by unique adaptations, including lactation and the birthing of live young (obligate viviparity), a vertebrate blood-specific diet by both sexes, and obligate bacterial symbiosis. This work describes the comparative analysis of six Glossina genomes representing three sub-genera: Morsitans (G. morsitans morsitans, G. pallidipes, G. austeni), Palpalis (G. palpalis, G. fuscipes), and Fusca (G. brevipalpis) which represent diffe

The bioefficacy of crude extracts of Azadirachta indica (Meliaceae) on the survival and development of myiasis-causing larvae of Chrysomya bezziana (Diptera: Calliphoridae).

Myiasis is a type of parasitosis originating from the invasion of tissues of live humans and other vertebrates by dipteran larvae. The Old World screwworm fly—Chrysomya bezziana—is known worldwide in the tropical regions for causing myiasis among man and domestic animals, thereby leading to health hazards and severe economic losses to the dairy farmers. Management techniques for controlling populations of the fly are needed to minimize these losses. Plant-derived materials have been increasingly evaluated these days in controlling the insects of medical and veterinary importance. This study ev
