Evidence for the association of ultraviolet-C and H(2)O(2)-induced apoptosis with acid sphingomyelinase activation.

Ceramide appears to be a potent second messenger implicated in the regulation of diverse cellular processes such as cell growth and differentiation, gene transcription, ligand binding, and cell death. Environmental stress-induced apoptosis is believed to be associated with the sphingomyelin degradation pathway, which generates ceramide as a second messenger in initiating the apoptosis response. To date, two distinct sphingomyelinases, a lysosomal acid sphingomyelinase (ASM), which is deficient in patients affected with types A and B Niemann-Pick disease (NPD), and a neutral, magnesium-dependen

Glutamatergic synaptic responses and long-term potentiation are impaired in the CA1 hippocampal area of calbindin D(28k)-deficient mice.

The contribution of the cytosolic calcium binding protein calbindin D(28K) (CaBP) to glutamatergic neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity was investigated in hippocampal CA1 area of wild-type and antisense transgenic CaBP-deficient mice, with the use of extracellular recordings in the ex vivo slice preparation. The amplitude of non-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (non-NMDAr)-mediated extracellular field excitatory postsynaptic potentials (fEPSPs) recorded in control medium was significantly greater in CaBP-deficient mice, whereas the afferent fiber volley was not affected. In contrast, the am

Effects of the intake of selected vitamins and minerals on cancer prevention.

This paper provides an overview of our knowledge on the involvement in cancer of vitamins A, C and E and of calcium, selenium and zinc. This work is a background for studies on dietary magnesium's effects on cancer. Consumption of vitamin A and its dietary precursors has been associated with reduced cancer at several sites in human and animal studies. Carcinogenesis studies using several models of cancer have been conducted on the influence of vitamin A deficiency, vitamin A excess and supplementation of vitamin A analogues. Vitamins C and E are effective in the prevention of N-nitroso compoun

Maternal hypomagnesemia causes placental abnormalities and fetal and postnatal mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Magnesium (Mg(2+)) is essential for cellular growth and the maintenance of normal cellular processes. However, little is known about how maternal hypomagnesemia during pregnancy affects fetal growth and development. This study investigated the effects of maternal hypomagnesemia on the late gestation placenta and fetus, and postnatal outcomes until weaning. METHODS: Female CD1 mice consumed a control (0.2% w/w Mg(2+)), moderately Mg(2+) deficient (MMD; 0.02% w/w Mg(2+)) or severely Mg(2+) deficient (SMD; 0.005% w/w Mg(2+)) diet for 4 weeks prior to mating and throughout pregnancy

Yield of testing for micronutrient deficiencies associated with pancreatic exocrine insufficiency in a clinical setting: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) can be difficult to diagnose and causes maldigestion symptoms and malabsorption. There has been a number of studies that have identified PEI associated micronutrient deficiencies (PEI-MD), however there is variation in both the frequency and type of PEI-MD reported, with the majority of studies including patients with PEI due to chronic pancreatitis (CP) or CP without PEI. There is a paucity of information regarding the prevalence of PEI-MD in patients with PEI without CP and the yield of testing for PEI-MD in a clinical setting in patients w

[Low salicylate diet and the possibility of nutrient deficiencies].

INTRODUCTION: Unfavourable reactions of the body to consumed food and/or medicines are an increasing epidemiological problem. Intolerance to acetylsalicylic acid is connected to the intake of some drugs and food containing salicylic acid. People suffering from this intolerance have to follow an elimination diet limiting the intake of salicylates. The elimination diet can lead to deficiencies in nutrients, and therefore we decided to test whether a low salicylate diet of various calorie content (1500, 2000, 2500 kcal) can pose such a risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Research material consisted of

Additional antihypertensive effect of magnesium supplementation with an angiotensin II receptor blocker in hypomagnesemic rats.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Magnesium (Mg) is an essential element for vascular function and blood pressure regulation. Several studies have demonstrated that Mg concentration is inversely associated with blood pressure, and that Mg supplementation attenuates hypertension. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of dietary Mg supplementation on the blood pressure effects of an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) in hypomagnesemic rats. METHODS: Fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into Mg-deficient (n = 30), normal diet plus Mg (n = 10), and control groups (n = 10). Mg-fre

[Vitamin K and bone metabolism - on the effect of vitamin K deficiency and gamma-carboxyglutamic acid (author's transl)].

Vitamin K was thought to be primarily involved in the production of clotting factors. The recent findings of gamma-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla) - vitamin K-dependent calcium binding amino acid - in various calcified tissues, however, have prompted suggestions that vitamin K may play an important role in calcification mechanism. The present study was designed to investigate the relation between vitamin K and calcification. Morphological, biomechanical and biochemical analyses were undertaken on bones from vitamin K deficient rats raised on vitamin K deficient diet combined with administration of

Vitamin D and Diabetes: Exploring the Link, Prevention, and Management.

Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient that plays a significant role in various aspects of health. This review explores the importance of vitamin D and its cofactors in preventing and managing diseases, mainly focusing on diabetes and its complications. The evidence reveals a strong link between low vitamin D levels and increased risks of type 2 diabetes (T2D), gestational diabetes, and type 1 diabetes. Vitamin D supplementation, which has shown promising results in reducing the incidence of these diseases and improving outcomes, offers hope in the fight against diabetes. Additionally, vitamin D defi

Sulfur Deprivation Modulates Salicylic Acid Responses via Nonexpressor of Pathogenesis-Related Gene 1 in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Mineral nutrients are essential for plant growth and reproduction, yet only a few studies connect the nutritional status to plant innate immunity. The backbone of plant defense response is mainly controlled by two major hormones: salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA). This study investigated changes in the macronutrient concentration (deficiency/excess of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and sulfur) on the expression of PR1, a well-characterized marker in the SA-pathway, and PDF1.2 and LOX2 for the JA-pathway, analyzing plants carrying the promoter of each gene fused to GUS as

COVID-19 and nutritional deficiency: a review of existing knowledge.

COVID-19 has resulted in an ongoing global pandemic, which spread largely among people who have had close contact with the infected person. The immunopathology of the SARS-CoV-2 virus includes the production of an excess amount of pro-inflammatory cytokines "a cytokine-storm". The respiratory system (main), cardiovascular system and the gastrointestinal tract are the most affected body systems during viral infection. It has been found that most of the patients who require admission to hospital are elderly or have chronic underlying diseases. Higher cases of malnutrition and co-morbidities like
