Robust Machine Learning-Driven Drug Repositioning Pipeline for Classical Subtype of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma.

This study presents a novel machine learning-driven drug repositioning pipeline to identify potential drug candidates for the Classical Subtype of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Our approach integrates the Graph Attention Neural Network version 2 (GATv2) model as the backbone to predict target genes of PDAC, achieving a high area under the curve (AUC) of 0.911. A robust two-step cross-validation workflow was also implemented to enhance model reliability and generalizability. Finally, PharmOmics network analysis was conducted for potential drug candidates' prediction. Through our pipe

Neural networks can accurately identify individual runners from their foot kinematics, but fail to predict their running performance.

Athletes and coaches may seek to improve running performance through adjustments to running form. Running form refers to the biomechanical characteristics of a runner's movement, and can distinguish individual runners as well as groups of runners, such as long-distance and short-distance runners. Yet, in long-distance running it is still unclear whether certain running forms lead to better performance. In this study, we used a neural network to test the extent to which individual running forms, measured from foot kinematics, exist within long-distance runners and whether running forms can pred

Improving genomic prediction accuracy for methane emission and feed efficiency in sheep: integrating rumen microbial PCA with host genomic variation using neural network GBLUP (NN-GBLUP).

BACKGROUND: Methane emissions from ruminant livestock pose a significant challenge to mitigating climate change. Genomic selection offers a promising approach to reduce methane emissions, but prediction accuracy remains low due to the high cost of measuring methane emissions. Integrating rumen microbiome composition (RMC) data may improve genomic prediction accuracy, yet the high dimensionality of RMC data presents computational challenges. This study aimed to (1) evaluate the effectiveness of principal component analysis (PCA) for reducing RMC data dimensionality while retaining essential inf

3D-WDA-PMorph: Efficient 3D MRI/TRUS Prostate Registration using Transformer-CNN Network and Wavelet-3D-Depthwise-Attention.

Multimodal image registration is crucial in medical imaging, particularly for aligning Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) data, which are widely used in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment planning. However, this task presents significant challenges due to the inherent differences between these imaging modalities, including variations in resolution, contrast, and noise. Recently, conventional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based registration methods, while effective at extracting local features, often struggle to capture global contextual information and

Automatic detection and prediction of COVID-19 in cough audio signals using coronavirus herd immunity optimizer algorithm.

The global spread of COVID-19, particularly through cough symptoms, necessitates efficient diagnostic tools. COVID-19 patients exhibit unique cough sound patterns distinguishable from other respiratory conditions. This study proposes an advanced framework to detect and predict COVID-19 using deep learning from cough audio signals. Audio data from the COUGHVID dataset undergo preprocessing through fuzzy gray level difference histogram equalization, followed by segmentation with a U-Net model. Key features are extracted via Zernike Moments (ZM) and Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). The Enh

Enhanced early chronic kidney disease prediction using hybrid waterwheel plant algorithm for deep neural network optimization.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive condition primarily caused by diabetes and hypertension, affecting millions worldwide. Early diagnosis remains a clinical challenge since traditional approaches, such as Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) estimation and kidney damage indicators, often fail to detect CKD in its initial stages. This study aims to enhance early CKD prediction by developing a deep neural network optimized with a novel hybrid metaheuristic that combines the Waterwheel Plant Algorithm (WWPA) with Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO). Using the UCI CKD dataset, rigorous preprocessi

Deep learning-based seed variety classification: a case study in maize.

Distinguishing among maize seed varieties is often challenging because of their morphological similarity and genetic diversity. Traditional seed identification methods frequently fail to balance accuracy, speed, and practicality, creating the need for innovative solutions. Recent advances in artificial intelligence, particularly in deep learning, provide promising alternatives for the precise classification of crop varieties. This study aimed to classify five maize seed genotypes (KSC201, KSC260, KSC400, KSC703, and KSC705) using only RGB digital images acquired under standardized lighting con

Smart farming with AI: Enhancing anemia detection in small ruminants.

Accurate classification of FAMACHA© scores is essential for assessing anemia in small ruminants and optimizing parasite management strategies in livestock agriculture. The FAMACHA© system categorizes anemia severity on a scale from 1 to 5, where scores 1 and 2 indicate healthy animals, score 3 represents a borderline condition, and scores 4 and 5 indicate severe anemia. In this study, a dataset of 4700 images of the lower eye conjunctiva of young male goats was collected weekly over six months using a Samsung A54 smartphone. Traditional FAMACHA© assessment methods rely on subjective visual exa

Forecasting visceral leishmaniasis in Sudan using hybrid wavelet based deep learning models on climate driven multivariate time series.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a climate-driven disease with a complex epidemiological pattern and is difficult to predict, especially in regions like eastern Sudan, where disease patterns vary substantially from season to season. In this study, our objective was to forecast the monthly incidence of VL in Gedaref State based on key climatic drivers-precipitation, temperature, and humidity. To capture the complex dynamics of disease transmission, we propose a new hybrid model based on wavelet transforms and state-of-the-art deep learning models to decompose multi-scale patterns and learn linear

Automated identification of aquatic insects: A case study using deep learning and computer vision techniques.

Deep learning techniques have recently found application in biodiversity research. Mayflies (Ephemeroptera), stoneflies (Plecoptera) and caddisflies (Trichoptera), often abbreviated as EPT, are frequently used for freshwater biomonitoring due to their large numbers and sensitivity to environmental changes. However, the morphological identification of EPT species is a challenging but fundamental task. Morphological identification of these freshwater insects is therefore not only extremely time-consuming and costly, but also often leads to misjudgments or generates datasets with low taxonomic re

Unsupervised learning for real-time and continuous gait phase detection.

Individuals with lower limb impairment after a stroke or spinal cord injury require rehabilitation, but traditional methods can be challenging for both patients and therapists. Robotic systems have been developed to help; however, they currently cannot detect the continuous gait phase in real time, hindering their effectiveness. To address this limitation, researchers have attempted to develop gait phase detection in general using fuzzy logic algorithms and neural networks. However, there is a paucity of research on real-time and continuous gait phase detection. In light of this gap, we propos

Ensembling U-Nets for microaneurysm segmentation in optical coherence tomography angiography in patients with diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness around the world. This makes early diagnosis and treatment important in preventing vision loss in a large number of patients. Microaneurysms are the key hallmark of the early stage of the disease, non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, and can be detected using OCT angiography quickly and non-invasively. Screening tools for non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy using OCT angiography thus have the potential to lead to improved outcomes in patients. We compared different configurations of ensembled U-nets to automatically segment m
