Shape of the hemodynamic response function in deaf infants eligible for cochlear implantation.

SIGNIFICANCE: Deaf and hard-of-hearing infants' hemodynamic response function (HRF) has not yet been characterized. However, without an appropriate estimate of their HRF, neuroimaging modalities relying on hemodynamic responses, e.g., functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), cannot be used reliably in this population, e.g., prior to and following cochlear implantation. We contribute to better theoretical models of and more suitable therapeutic interventions for the neural changes induced by auditory and language deprivation in deaf infants.

Machine Learning Classification of Migraine Using fNIRS During a Postural Task.

BACKGROUND: Migraine diagnosis and severity staging rest on clinical interviews according to the ICHD-3 criteria, with no validated objective biomarker. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a portable and non-invasive method, but existing fNIRS migraine classification studies remain relatively small and rely on cognitive tasks. We assessed whether prefrontal hemodynamic responses with a head-down-to-knees maneuver separate migraine patients from controls, and high- from low-severity migraine. METHODS: Prefrontal fNIRS, including short separation channels, was recorded during the m

Clinical and radiological profie changes of patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy over 40 years.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore how clinical and radiological profiles of patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) have changed over the past 40 years. METHODS: We included our three Japanese case series of CEA in the late 1980s (n = 73), the 2000s (n = 142), and the 2010s (n = 108). We precisely compared the patients' demographics, clinical features, radiological findings, and short- and long-term outcomes among the three cohorts. CEA was performed with general anesthesia, routine use of an internal shunt tube, intraoperative monitoring using somatosensory evoked potential or

High-intensity interval training with blood-flow restriction enhances sprint and maximal aerobic power in male endurance athletes.

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can improve endurance performance. We investigated the concurrent impact of HIIT and blood-flow restriction (BFR) as a novel approach to further enhance maximal aerobic and anaerobic physiology and performances in trained athletes. In a randomized controlled trial, eighteen endurance-trained males ( V ˙ O2peak 65.6 ± 5.1 mL.min-1.kg-1) included three sessions of HIIT per week (sets of 15 s efforts at 100% maximal aerobic power, interspersed by 15 s recovery) into their usual training for 3 weeks, either with restriction imposed on both lower limbs at 50

Monitoring Treadmill Physical Exercise and Recovery in Elite Water Polo Players with Local Muscle Oxygen Saturation Measurements-Regional and Sex Differences.

Background: Despite numerous data on whole-body responses, we have less information about local muscular changes during physical exercise in athletes. Oxygen saturation (SmO2) changes in the working muscles follow phases of load and are useful, as local metabolism could influence physical fitness. Methods: A total of 100 asymptomatic elite water polo players (63% male, age: 17.2 (interquartile range: 16.1-18.9) years) were examined using near-infrared spectroscopy to measure SmO2 in both vastus lateralis and left deltoid muscles during continuous uphill running treadmill exercise. Results: Dif

Feature fusion analysis approach based on synchronous EEG-fNIRS signals: application in etomidate use disorder individuals.

Etomidate is commonly used for induction of anesthesia, but prolonged use can affect brain neurovascular mechanisms, potentially leading to use disorders. However, limited research exists on the impact of etomidate on brain function, and accurately and noninvasively extracting and analyzing neurovascular brain features remains a challenge. This study introduces a novel feature fusion approach based on whole-brain synchronous Electroencephalography (EEG)-functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) signals aimed at addressing the difficulty of jointly analyzing neural and hemodynamic signals a

Lateral decubitus: its influence on hemodynamic and respiratory function during retroperitoneal robotic assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (R-RALP) in children.

Retroperitoneal robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (R-RALP) is the commonest urologic procedure performed in children, entailing retroperitoneal CO2 insufflation and lateral decubitus, whose effects on cardiopulmonary variables are poorly known. We, therefore, studied hemodynamic and respiratory changes due to CO2 insufflation and lateral decubitus in children undergoing R-RALP and their effects on regional tissue oxygenation. Between 1/2021 and 7/2024, children affected by ureteropelvic joint obstruction (UPJO) underwent a pyeloplasty by R-RALP at Necker Enfants Malades Hospital (Paris

Citrulline Supplementation Improves Microvascular Function and Muscle Strength in Middle-Aged and Older Adults with Type 2 Diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) develop vascular complications due to arginine deficiency-induced microvascular endothelial dysfunction, which is related to the loss of muscle strength (MS) associated with aging. Thus, increased nitric oxide (NO)-mediated vasodilation may improve MS. We investigated the impact of the NO precursor citrulline on microvascular function (endothelial and muscle reactivity) and MS in T2D patients. METHODS: Sixteen participants with T2D (53-72 years, nine females) were randomized to citrulline supplementation (CITS, 6 g/day) or placebo for 4 weeks pr

Transcranial Photobiomodulation Improves Cognitive Function, Post-Concussion, and PTSD Symptoms in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs in millions of people globally each year, with mild TBI (mTBI) representing over 90% of cases. Despite the common assumption of full recovery, significant disturbances persist in many patients with mTBI, including cognitive deficit, headache, dizziness, sleep problems, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Given that effective treatment is still scarce, the present study investigated the efficacy of transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) as an intervention for improving these sequelae in patients with mTBI. In this randomized placebo-control

Exogenous Ketosis during Early Acclimatization at High Altitude: Ventilatory, Cardiovascular and Muscular Responses to Maximal Exercise.

BACKGROUND: Exogenous ketosis, induced via ketone monoester (KE) ingestion, can attenuate blood desaturation and muscle deoxygenation during hypoxic exercise. However, its effect(s) on exercise capacity and underlying integrated physiological responses to incremental exercise to exhaustion during early acclimatization at terrestrial high altitude remain unexplored. METHODS: Healthy active adults were randomized to an intermittent exogenous ketosis (IEK; n = 16) or placebo (PLA, n = 17) group, before performing two incremental cycling tests to volitional exhaustion. The first was conducted at

SnOx Nanoflakes as Enhanced Near-Infrared Photothermal Therapy Agents Synthesized from Electrochemically Oxidized SnS2 Powders.

Near-infrared (NIR) photothermal therapy (PTT) using nanomaterials is a promising strategy for selective cancer treatment. We report two tin-based two-dimensional (2D) nanoflakes─defective SnS2 (SnS2-x) and mixed-phase SnOx─synthesized via top-down ultrasonication and electrochemical exfoliation with oxidation, respectively. Both nanoflakes have thicknesses below 20 nm, and their lateral sizes (<400 nm) were confirmed by AFM, DLS, atomic force microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Despite a similar optical band gap (∼1.89 eV), SnO2 nanoflakes display

CsxWO3@NBs as a Multi-Image Guided Photothermal/Photodynamic Combination Therapy Platform for the Treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Effective cancer treatment relies on the precise deployment of clinical imaging techniques to accurately treat tumors. One highly representative technology among these is multi-imaging guided phototherapy. This work introduces a new and innovative theranostic drug that combines near-infrared (NIR) irradiation-induced photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) to treat malignancies. Moreover, it can be utilized as a contrasting substance for X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) to aid in the administration of therapy. METHODS: C

Reduced inhibition control ability in children with ADHD due to coexisting learning disorders: an fNIRS study.

INTRODUCTION: Inhibition control, as the core component of executive function, might play a crucial role in the understanding of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorders (SLD). Inhibition control deficits have been observed in children with ADHD or SLD. This study sought to test in a multi-modal fashion (i.e., behavior and plus brain imaging) whether inhibition control abilities would be further deteriorated in the ADHD children due to the comorbidity of SLD. METHOD: A total number of 90 children (aged 6-12 years) were recruited, including 30 ADHD, 30 AD

A brief real-time fNIRS-informed neurofeedback training of the prefrontal cortex changes brain activity and connectivity during subsequent working memory challenge.

Working memory (WM) represents a building-block of higher cognitive functions and a wide range of mental disorders are associated with WM impairments. Initial studies have shown that several sessions of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) informed real-time neurofeedback (NF) allow healthy individuals to volitionally increase activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a region critically involved in WM. For the translation to therapeutic or neuroenhancement applications, however, it is critical to assess whether fNIRS-NF success transfers into neural and behavioral WM en
