Histopathology and vascular endothelial growth factor in untreated and diode laser-treated retinopathy of prematurity.

OBJECTIVES: We had the unique opportunity to compare the eyes of a premature infant with stage 3 retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in both eyes after the condition was treated by diode laser photocoagulation in one eye only. After the infant's death, we investigated the extent of structural damage incurred with the diode laser and examined the effect of treatment on vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression. METHODS: The eyes were fixed and embedded in paraffin. Adjacent 6 microns sections were either stained for histopathologic analysis or used for in situ hybridization. VEGF messe

Diastolic zero-flow in the umbilical artery in twin pregnancies.

Clinical arterial blood flow measurements in single pregnancies can not be precisely estimated yet. ARED (absent or reverse end diastolic) flow of the umbilical artery (UA) commonly indicates a symptom of fetal jeopardy. The interpretation of blood flow measurement in twin pregnancies is still controversial. On one hand, no differences in a single pregnancies are found, and on the other hand, increased resistance indices have been reported. In the feto-fetal transfusion syndrome mostly there are normal blood flow measurements. When pathological blood flow occurs, usually it affects the donor.

Aggregation-activated delayed and two-photon fluorescence in a charge-modulated pyridine-acridan luminophore.

Molecular charge modulation offers a promising strategy for controlling the excited-state properties and aggregation behavior of organic luminophores. Nevertheless, the consequences of cationization strongly depend on the molecular structure. Herein, we investigate a twisted π-extended pyridine-dimethylacridan derivative (PyAcr) and its cationic pyridinium analogue (PyAcr+) to elucidate how neutral-to-cationic transformation affects their photophysical properties. Experimental characterization combined with theoretical calculations provides insight into the relationship between molecular struc

Oxygen-responsive high-efficiency orange-red room-temperature phosphorescence from chalcogen-containing dibenzo[a,c]phenazine foldamers.

Efficient orange-red/red room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in purely organic materials is highly desirable for bio-imaging and information security but remains scarce due to the energy gap law and the challenge in achieving strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in red-emitting systems. Herein, a functional unit combination strategy was employed to develop a series of orange-red-emitting RTP materials. By modifying a dibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DBP) emissive core with flexible chalcogen-containing foldamers (phenylselenyl, phenylthio, or phenoxyl), three new compounds (O-DBP, S-DBP, and Se-DBP) were

Genotype-phenotype relationship in a cohort of 131 Chinese patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1.

INTRODUCTION: Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is an autosomal dominant dynamic mutation disorder characterized by myotonia and muscle weakness. The genotype-phenotype relationship has not been clearly defined in Chinese patients. METHODS: The clinical and genetic characteristics of 131 patients from 105 pedigrees were retrospectively analyzed. Triplet-primed Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Flanking PCR were performed to analyze the CTG repeats in DMPK gene. RESULTS: Among 131 DM1 patients, 64.9% were male, indicating a higher male admission rate, possibly due to limited diagnostic awaren

Harnessing Photoexcited-State Pathways in Boron Dipyrromethene for Phototheranostics and Photopolymerization.

Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes are widely recognized for their strong visible-light absorption, high fluorescence, and structural modularity. Beyond fluorescence, molecular engineering can redirect their photoexcited states toward distinct photochemical pathways, expanding their utility in photomedicine and materials chemistry. This Spotlight examines BODIPY photochemistry from this excited-state perspective and connects recent advances in phototheranostics and photopolymerization. In phototherapy, BODIPY excited states can be directed toward triplet-state energy transfer for singlet-oxyge

Current management and emerging pharmacotherapeutic strategies in acute promyelocytic leukemia.

INTRODUCTION: Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) has evolved from one of the most rapidly fatal neoplasms into the most curable acute myeloid leukemia subtype, following the sequential clinical introduction of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide (ATO). Despite cure rates now approaching 100% in non-high-risk disease, early death occurring before or shortly after treatment initiation and relapse/refractory APL cases remain the principal obstacles to achieving a definitive cure. AREAS COVERED: This review summarizes current standard-of-care APL management, including risk stratif

Altermagnetism and superconductivity: a short historical review.

This review is organized into three parts. In the first part, we explore the deep interconnections among three seemingly unrelated concepts in condensed matter physics: electronic liquid crystal (ELC) phases, multipole expansions, and altermagnetism (AM). At the heart of these phenomena lies a shared foundation: spin-momentum locking in the nonrelativistic regime. Originally proposed in the context of ELC phases, nonrelativistic spin-momentum locking (NRSML) was later elegantly incorporated into the formalism of multipole expansions. This framework can be further extended across multiple atomi

Genitourinary Oncology Highlights from the European Society for Medical Oncology Annual Meeting 2025: Advances in Renal Cell Carcinoma and Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer.

<p>Background: At ESMO 2025, practice-changing advances in genitourinary oncology emerged for renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), highlighting a shift toward early systemic treatment and biomarker-driven treatment selection. Summary: In localized RCC, the NESCIO trial showed pathologic responses with short-course neoadjuvant checkpoint inhibition, while the RAMPART study supported adjuvant dual checkpoint blockade for high-risk disease. For advanced RCC, the KEYMAKER-U03 trial demonstrated improved progression-free survival with a novel HIF-2α triplet regimen,

Heavy-Atom-Embedded Narrowband Multiple-Resonance Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Emitters With Aromaticity Guided by Hückel's and Baird's Rules.

Multiple-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters featuring rapid reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) are highly desirable for efficient triplet harvesting.  Conventional heavy-atom strategies often enhance RISC at the expense of spectral broadening, particularly when heavy atoms are embedded in 8π-electron six-membered rings, where aromaticity reversal between Hückel's and Baird's rules induces structural reorganization. Here, we report a design strategy through peripheral fusion of heavy-atom-containing five-membered aromatic rings into a classical multiple-reson

Unraveling the Dual-Emission Mechanisms and Pressure-Induced Response in Organic Polymorphic Room-Temperature Phosphorescence.

The rational design of stimuli-responsive organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials is often hindered by an incomplete understanding of the intricate interplay between molecular structure, crystal packing, and excited-state dynamics, particularly in polymorphic systems. Clarifying how subtle structural variations govern photophysical properties is crucial for advancing tunable luminescent materials. Herein, we systematically investigate the dual-emission mechanism and pressure-responsive behavior of a polymorphic RTP material, BrTA-F, in its two crystalline phases (Cry-A and Cry

Computational investigation of diphenyl sulfone based thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials and their optoelectronic properties.

This study investigates the influence of molecular structure on the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) mechanism through theoretical calculations. Experimentally verified TADF emitters and their structural derivatives were analyzed using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT). Ground and excited state geometries (S0, S1, T1) were optimized, and key parameters including vertical and adiabatic singlet-triplet energy gaps (ΔEST), reorganization energies (λ), spin-orbit coupling (SOC) matrix elements (SOCME), and reverse intersystem cross

Density Functional Theory Calculations of Spin Polarization for Diradicals in Single-Molecule Junctions.

Spin-dependent electron transport through chiral molecules, namely the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, emerged as promising for quantum applications or spintronics, among other applications, but mostly considered for closed-shell systems that exhibit spin polarization (P s). In this work, we investigate P s in diradicals, which is analogous but distinct from CISS in closed-shell systems that are driven, in part, by spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We report on the analysis of P s for open-shell singlet and triplet organic molecular junctions with finite Au(111) electrodes

A general structural decoupling strategy toward ultra-long blue circularly polarized room-temperature phosphorescence.

Circularly polarized room-temperature phosphorescence (CP-RTP) materials are highly sought after for 3D displays and information encryption, yet achieving high-performance blue emission remains a formidable challenge due to the intrinsic trade-off between triplet energy (ET) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) efficiency. Conventional molecular designs incorporating heteroatoms into conjugated systems to enhance SOC often lead to stabilized excited states and red-shifted emission. Herein, we propose a "structural decoupling" strategy by employing a non-conjugated methylene (-CH2-) bridge between chi

Anthraquinone-Based Electron Reservoir-Pump Photosensitizer Generating Radical Ion Pairs for Metabolism-Targeted Photodynamic Therapy.

Type I photodynamic therapy (PDT) overcomes oxygen (O2) dependence of type II PDT, but developing hypoxia-efficient electron-transfer photosensitizers remains challenging. Herein, we proposed an anthraquinone (AQ)-based single-component "electron reservoir-pump" strategy to enhance the electron transfer ability of type I photosensitizers. In this molecular design, the AQ scaffold functioned as an intrinsic electron reservoir, while the electron-rich tetraphenylethylene (TPE) served as an electron pump that actively donated electrons. The synergistic reservoir-pump interaction enabled the photo

Boron-Locked Diaza-Octagon Strategy for Constructing Multi-Resonance Emitters Enabling Anti-Quenching Narrowband OLEDs With High Efficiency and Low Efficiency Roll-Off.

Developing multi-resonance (MR) emitters to simultaneously achieve high external quantum efficiency (EQE), low efficiency roll-off, and suppressed aggregation-caused quenching and spectral broadening is critically important and challenging for advancing narrowband organic light-emitting diodes. Herein, two emitters, 8NN-1B and 8NN-2B, are developed based on diaza-octagon-containing emitting core (8NN) through the incorporation of multiple boron/nitrogen (B/N) units. Building upon the inherent MR characteristics and saddle-shaped configuration of the 8NN matrix, the boron-locked derivatives exh

Optimizing triazine-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence molecules for enhanced organic light-emitting diode applications.

In pursuit of efficient organic light-emitting materials, we employed a rational design strategy to develop eleven cyanotriazine-based donor-π-acceptor emitters for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) applications. A comprehensive computational investigation using DFT and TD-DFT methods was carried out to evaluate their geometric and optoelectronic properties. The designed molecules are based on 4,4'-(6-phenyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyl)dibenzonitrile, where the dibenzonitrile unit acts as an acceptor and various donor units are introduced via a phenyl π-linker. Steric interactions be
