Wohlfahrtia magnifica is the main agent of traumatic myiasis in the southern Palaearctic zone. It was recorded in outbreak situations in Crete, Greece, for the first time in 1999, causing widespread production losses and considerable concern in the livestock sectors. Most commonly applied curative insecticides, organophosphates and pyrethroids, can kill larvae of W. magnifica, but they do not provide long-term protection from infestation or re-infestation, which would facilitate wound healing. The objective of the present work was to study the seasonal dynamics of sheep wohlfahrtiosis in Crete

The introduction of neonicotinoids for managing insecticide resistance in mosquitoes is of high interest as they interact with a biochemical target not previously used in public health. In this concern, Bayer developed a combination of the neonicotinoid clothianidin and the pyrethroid deltamethrin (brand name Fludora Fusion) as a new vector control tool. Although this combination proved to be efficient against pyrethroid-resistant mosquitoes, its ability to prevent the selection of pyrethroid and neonicotinoid resistance alleles was not investigated. In this context, the objective of this work

Background and Study Aim Advanced endoscopic imaging technologies are routinely optimized and validated using vertebrate animal models. We present a novel, high-throughput insect model that provides a biologically realistic, reproducible, and ethically unproblematic alternative for evaluating endoscopic imaging modalities. Methods Manduca sexta larvae (fifth instar, 6.6 ± 0.23 g) were used for the demonstration of endoscopic imaging. Healthy controls ( n = 27) were compared with chemically (5% dextran sodium sulfate, n = 20) and bacterially ( Bacillus thuringiensis , n = 33) induced gut inflam

Clothianidin (CLO) is a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide in agricultural systems and may pose risks to non-target aquatic organisms, including amphibians. Here, we evaluated acute and sublethal effects of CLO on Fejervarya cancrivora tadpoles, an important predator of insect pests in rice paddy ecosystems. Acute toxicity tests (96 h) yielded an LC50 of 50.41 mg a.i./L (with LC10, LC25 and LC30 values of 15.35, 31.96 and 36.07 mg a.i./L, respectively). Sublethal exposure at these concentrations significantly reduced body weight, whole-body length, and hindlimb length during metamorphosis.

As holometabolous insects, ladybird beetles display marked morphological differences between the larval and adult stages. However, the larvae and adults of Chilocorus rubidus share the same diet, and no prior study has compared their mouthparts. In this study, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the ultramorphology of mouthparts and associated sensilla in both adults and larvae of C. rubidus. The results showed that the mouthparts of C. rubidus are of the typical biting-chewing type, and their basic composition of the mouthparts are conserved between larvae and adults. Howev

Entomopathogenic fungi can manipulate host behavior to promote infection success, but the molecular effectors remain largely unknown. Here we show that Metarhizium anisopliae suppresses feeding in the migratory locust Locusta migratoria by downregulating an antenna-enriched odorant-binding protein gene, LmOBP2. Metabolomic profiling of infected hemolymph identified infection-associated increases in indole, taurine, DL-serine and dimethylglycine; injection or exposure to these metabolites reduced antennal LmOBP2 transcript abundance. Recombinant LmOBP2 bound key corn volatiles (e.g., leaf alcoh

Insecticide resistance poses a major challenge to global pest management, yet its cascading effects on ecological networks remain poorly understood. Here, we show that target-site-resistant herbivorous insects can accumulate unmetabolized insecticides and inadvertently function as "toxic prey," impairing the fitness of their natural enemies. Using neonicotinoid- and spinosyn-resistant Myzus persicae and genetically modified Drosophila melanogaster, we demonstrate that resistant hosts surviving high-dose insecticide exposure retain substantial poison residues that are transferred to developing

Eusocial insects maintain their colonies through diverse cooperative tasks, yet patterns among these behaviors remain poorly understood in hornets. To examine temporal polyethism, we observed a Vespa velutina nigrithorax colony under controlled laboratory conditions (26 °C, 60% RH). Workers were categorized into 5-day cohorts and monitored across five tasks: nest hygiene, prey foraging and first pellet handling, second pellet handling, brood feeding, and foraging for nest materials. Adult emergence occurred in three synchronized cohorts. Workers began to transition to tasks outside of the nest

Antagonistic coevolution has long been predicted to leave a macroevolutionary signature of escalating defences in host species. Opposing this classic theory, we previously reported phylogenetic declines in the concentrations of cardenolide toxins among milkweed species in the genus Asclepias. Here we tested the hypothesis of a trade-off between toxin concentration and potency, such that species with lower investment in toxin abundance show higher potency per unit toxin. We tested leaf extracts from more than 50 Asclepias species in vitro against the monarch butterfly's neural Na+/K+-ATPase, th

Numerosity perception is an evolutionarily conserved ability observed across diverse taxa, from insects and fish to birds and primates. Unlike traditional visual categories, numerosity possesses an intrinsic metric structure, making it well suited for quantitatively investigating how categorical representations emerge along the visual hierarchy. While numerical representations are well characterized in high-level associative areas of non-human primates and avian species, neuronal processing of numerosity in upstream regions remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, we recorded single-un

Stimulus-responsive delivery systems enable precise control over the release of therapeutic and agricultural agents. Among various triggers, cellulase has recently attracted increasing attention because of its unique biological distribution; it is absent in humans but produced by specific micro-organisms and insects. Herein, we report a cellulase-responsive drug delivery carrier based on terminally alkylated cello-oligosaccharide assemblies. Among the assemblies examined, terminally hexylated cello-oligosaccharides with the cellulose I allomorph (CELI-C6) exhibited the highest loading capacity

This study focuses on the detection of pests in citrus fruits using computer vision (CV) techniques and image detection technologies based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Early detection enables pest control, reduces the use of pesticides, and generates alerts for the inspection of surrounding areas. One of the models used is You Only Look Once (YOLO), which is based on a single-stage CNN. This model is fast, resource-efficient, and has low latency, enabling it to run on a personal computer. Another type of neural network is based on the vision transformer, a paradigm that requires mo

Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of chronic neurological impairment worldwide, and there is evidence that both genetic and environmental variation contribute to the likelihood of recovery. Using an insect model of traumatic brain injury, we examined variation in the risk of mortality using quantitative genetic approaches applied previously for life history traits in Drosophila melanogaster. We quantified additive genetic variance for mortality risk using a controlled breeding design and found levels of variation consistent with existing data on major fitness components. We did not detec

Ticks, recognized as the second most significant vector of pathogens after mosquitoes, are of considerable interest in medical research. Although mitochondrial genomes are commonly employed in the phylogenetic studies of insects and arthropods, investigations into tick mitochondrial genomes are relatively scarce. The evolutionary and phylogenetic relationships at the family and genus levels remain unresolved. In this study, the mitochondrial genomes of Haemaphysalis warburtoni, Ixodes crenulatus, Rhipicephalus bursa, and Rhipicephalus pumilio were first sequenced and annotated based on the Ill

Pesticides are chemical substances of natural or synthetic origin used to control pests and insects. Environmental pollution occurs when pesticide contamination spreads away from the target plants. Pesticides and their transformation products can have adverse effects on both target and non-target plants and organisms. Azole antifungals, which are imidazole and 1H-1,2,4-triazole derivatives, are the most commonly used agents for treating invasive fungal infections. Imidazole and 1H-1,2,4-triazole are important degradation products of these substances. In this study, Brassica napus (oilseed rape

Melipona scutellaris, a generalist Brazilian stingless bee, is considered a key pollinator of natural vegetation and cultivated plants. Ready-mix insecticides are usually formulated with two active ingredients and have been used to control the most problematic pests but most likely have adverse effects, such as harming non-target insects. Therefore, we assessed the effects of chronic exposure to residual concentrations of five ready-mix insecticides, acetamiprid + bifenthrin, chlorantraniliprole + abamectin, chlorantraniliprole + lambda-cyhalothrin, thiamethoxam + chlorantraniliprole, and thia

The excessive use of synthetic chemical pesticides in agriculture has led to the emergence of resistant insect populations, posing significant threats to both ecosystems and human health. As part of sustainable pest management, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies have increasingly incorporated eco-friendly alternatives, such as plant ethanolic extracts, to reduce chemical pesticide dependency. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ethanolic extracts from Cannabis sativa L., Citrullus colocynthis L. Schrad., and Laurus nobilis L. in controlling tomato crop pests. Repellency

Annona muricata (soursop) produces secondary metabolites with antimicrobial and insecticidal properties. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known to enhance the production of secondary metabolites in medicinal plants. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the insecticidal activity of ethanolic leaf extracts from AMF-colonized soursop trees against the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) and the triatomine bug Triatoma pallidipennis, a vector of Chagas disease. Ethanolic leaf extracts were obtained from trees inoculated with two AMF consortia (Cerro del Metate and Agua Dulce), with the spec

Apolipophorin-III (ApoLp-III), a multifunctional protein with lipid transport and immune defense functions, widely exists in insects. Although the function of ApoLp-III as a pattern recognition receptor (PRR) in immunity has been relatively studied, the immune response mediated by ApoLp-III is still vague. To understand whether ApoLp-III is involved in the activation of the prophenoloxidase-activating system (PPO-AS), we examined the production of nitric oxide (NO), and the synthesis of antimicrobial peptides after immune recognition. The larvae of lepidopteran pest Ostrinia furnacalis were us

Insects are recognized as a potential alternative source of proteins and have been studied in recent years as a substrate for enzymatic hydrolysis to obtain bioactive peptides. This study aimed to evaluate the production of hydrolysates with antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antihypertensive properties from mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) flour and its protein concentrate. The proteases flavourzyme, alcalase, and neutrase were used for hydrolysis, according to an experimental design of mixtures. The highest antioxidant properties for the mealworm flour were found in the control test, where the substr
