Considerations and differences in the treatment of a fused tooth.

Dental malformations relating to bigeminism, fused teeth, etc., have a prevalence of 0.5-5%, depending on geographic, racial or genetic factors. This in turn may influence the treatment to be provided in each case. Anomalies in the shape, size and number of teeth are more common in the so-called pediatric genetic syndromes, many of which are associated to mental retardation. The present study describes two clinical cases of similar dental fusion involving a central incisor and comprising different and individualized treatment plans due to the important differences in the characteristics of eac

Tuberous sclerosis and its oral manifestations. A clinical case.

Tuberous sclerosis (TS) is a congenital anomaly in the development of the embryo which is transmitted through the autosomal dominant gene. It has various forms of clinical expression. It is classified as one of what are known as Phacomatoses (phakos stain and oma tumour), which are development anomalies that can originate tumours and/or hamartomas in the nervous system. Lesions in the nervous system are nearly always accompanied by cutaneous anomalies. In this study we introduce the case of a woman patient aged 55, diagnosed several years earlier with Tuberous Sclerosis, who attended for intra

Amyloidosis of the submaxillary gland.

Amyloidosis can be defined as an extracellular deposit of the amyloid fibrillar protein in one or more locations in the organism. Multiple clinical and biochemical forms of amyloid exist, and are characterized according to their fibrillar structural characteristics. The Red Congo stain presents green fluorescence when histologic cuts are observed by polarized light. The deposits of this substance can be focal in nearly any area of the organism, although the perivascular space tends to be affected. We present the case of a woman operated on for myeloma at the base of the cranium who showed no w

Appearance and culture: oral pathology associated with certain "fashions" (tattoos, piercings, etc.).

Humans are characterized by a compulsive tendency to distinguish themselves from the rest: differences in clothes, hairstyle or "decorative" details are used to this effect, based on highly diverse criteria. Such differentiating practices may be aimed at identification with a certain ideological group, for example, or with a concrete "fashion", and involve the use of jewelry, clothes, unusual attire, hairstyles, mutilations, etc. In this context, the present review addresses certain aspects of mutilation practices from both the general and specifically dental perspectives. Mutations imply perm

Lichenoid reaction caused by Clopidogrel, a new anti-platelet drug.

The case is described of a 71-year-old woman presenting with acute erosive lichen planus. The lesions appeared one week after starting treatment with clopidogrel (Plavix), a new antiplatelet drug, for the prevention of cerebral thrombosis. The patient presented erosive lesions on both jugal mucosal surfaces and the lateral sides of the tongue, associated with intense pain. The clinical diagnosis of erosive lichen planus induced by clopidogrel was confirmed by histological biopsy evaluation. Clopidogrel was replaced by aspirin, which was the antiplatelet drug previously used by the patient, and

Mandibular nerve paresthesia caused by endodontic treatment.

The paresthesias of the inferior dental nerve consists of a complication that can occur after performing various dental procedures such as cystectomies, extraction of impacted teeth, apicoectomies, endodontic treatments, local anesthetic deposition, preprosthetic or implantologic surgery. The possible mechanisms of nervous lesions are mechanical, chemical and thermal. Mechanical injury includes compression, stretching, partial or total resection and laceration. The lesion can cause a discontinuity to the nerve with Wallerian degeneration of the distal and integrated fibers of the covering (axo

Radiographic features of osseous hemangioma in the maxillo-facial region. Bibliographic review and case report.

Osseous hemangioma in the maxillofacial region (OHMF) was first reported in the literature as a clinical entity in the middle of last century. Several fatal cases of accidental hemorrhage following tooth extraction were attributed to OHMF. The discovery of X-rays and image diagnosis should have facilitated identification of the lesion and contributed to establishing differential diagnosis with other entities. However, our review of case-reports suggests that this lesion has been misdiagnosed and mistaken for other neoplastic and non-neoplastic hemorrhagic bone lesions. The aim of this study wa

Human repercussions of foot and mouth disease and other similar viral diseases.

Foot and mouth disease is a frequent viral zoonosis in livestock that may occasionally also affect humans. Transmission to man usually occurs as a result of the consumption of unprocessed milk. The clinical manifestations include fever, headache, weakness, muscle pain, and the development of vesicles and ulcers throughout the oral mucosa. Vesicular stomatitis is another zoonosis similar to foot and mouth disease that can likewise affect humans with similar clinical manifestations, in which the presence of aphthae is highly suggestive. In turn, hand, foot and mouth disease and herpangina are tw

Oral manifestations and dental treatment in menopause.

Menopause is a physiological process typically occurring in the fifth decade of life in women, and involving permanent cessation of menstruation. Menopause is the consequence of hormonal changes that produce a series of general manifestations that have become increasingly important as a result of the increased female life expectancy in the industrialized world; indeed, such manifestations are observed throughout the last third of the female lifetime. However, oral symptoms are also found in addition to the more general manifestations of menopause (i.e., hot flush and psychological alterations)

Alopecia areata of dental origin.

The association of alopecia areata and infectious foci of dental origin is relatively common, and may be explained by the autoimmune nature of the disorder. We describe a case of alopecia areata with no apparent cause and that was effectively resolved by eliminating a focalized dental infection via endodontic treatment. The presence of common immune mediators in the pathogenesis of both alopecia areata and dental infection could account for the dental origin of the hair loss. In this sense, patients with localized alopecia should be subjected to careful exploration of the oral cavity in search

Gingival disorders of immune origin.

Loss of the regulatory control of the immune and inflammatory defense mechanisms of the body can lead to host tissue damage, as a result of a series of complex mechanisms. In the oral cavity, and particularly in the gingival region, these dysfunctions can manifest in association to some background systemic disorder either as lesions confined to the mouth or as lesions heralding posterior florid manifestations. A review is made of the clinical changes, possible immunopathological mechanisms and diagnostic and management options in relation to pemphigus vulgaris, benign mucous membrane pemphigoi

General and dental characteristics of Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome. Review of literature and presentation of a case report.

A case report of Bloch-Sulzberger Incontinentia Pigmenti is presented, in which the dental symptoms are considered as a base, not just for a review of this disorder within the scope of Integrated Paediatric Dentistry, but also in order to establish an adequate dental treatment for the affected children. There should be interdisciplinary coordination, leading to better treatment and therefore an improved quality of life for these patients.
