Association of age and gender with alphaherpesvirus infections of the central nervous system in the immunocompetent host.

BACKGROUND: The alphaherpesviruses Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and human herpes simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2) can cause severe infections of the central nervous system (CNS). OBJECTIVES: To analyze whether age and gender of immunocompetent individuals are associated with the incidence of herpesvirus CNS diseases. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 241 patients with virologically confirmed HSV-1, HSV-2 or VZV-infection of the CNS (excluding neonatal infection and varicella), diagnosed at the Department of Virology, Medical University Vienna, from 2001 to 2009 were analyzed retrospectivel

Post-varicella arteriopathy of childhood: natural history of vascular stenosis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the course of vascular changes in childhood post-varicella arteriopathy (PVA) and its relationship to recurrent arterial ischemic stroke or TIA (AIS/TIA). METHODS: Subjects were children with AIS/TIA occurring <1 year after varicella, ischemic localization consistent with unilateral disease affecting the supraclinoid internal carotid artery or proximal anterior or middle cerebral arteries, and no identified AIS/TIA etiology other than PVA. Charts, brain MRI, and sequential cerebral vessel imaging (selective cerebral angiography or MR angiography [SCA/MRA]) were retrosp

Varicella-zoster infection after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation: incidence, risk factors and prevention with low-dose aciclovir and ganciclovir.

We examined the incidence of herpes varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection in 151 patients undergoing allogeneic BMT between August 1990 and September 1997 and who survived at least 3 months. Median follow-up was 17 (range 3.3-80.7) months. Herpes simplex virus antibody positive (HSV+) patients received aciclovir 1200 mg p.o. daily or 750 mg i.v. daily, in divided doses from day 0 to engraftment. Ganciclovir (5 mg/kg i.v. three times per week) was given in CMV+ patients (or if the donor was CMV+) from engraftment to day 84. Ganciclovir was continued or recommenced if a dose of greater than 20

A random cluster survey and a convenience sample give comparable estimates of immunity to vaccine preventable diseases in children of school age in Victoria, Australia.

We compared estimates of the age-specific population immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B and varicella zoster viruses in Victorian school children obtained by a national sero-survey, using a convenience sample of residual sera from diagnostic laboratories throughout Australia, with those from a three-stage random cluster survey. When grouped according to school age (primary or secondary school) there was no significant difference in the estimates of immunity to measles, mumps, hepatitis B or varicella. Compared with the convenience sample, the random cluster survey estimated highe

CD11b expression identifies CD8+CD28+ T lymphocytes with phenotype and function of both naive/memory and effector cells.

A previously unreported CD8(+)CD28(+)CD11b(+) T cell subset occurs in healthy individuals and expands in patients suffering from primary viral infections. In functional terms, these cells share the features of naive/memory CD8(+)CD28(+)CD11b(-) and terminally differentiated effector CD8(+)CD28(-)CD11b(+) subpopulations. Like CD28(-) cells, CD28(+)CD11b(+) lymphocytes have the ability to produce IFN-gamma, to express perforin granules in vivo, and to exert a potent cytolytic activity. Moreover, these cells can respond to chemotactic stimuli and can efficiently cross the endothelial barrier. In

Live virus vaccination near a pregnancy: flawed policies, tragic results.

Vaccination of women with live virus vaccines around conception has always been contraindicated by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the vaccine manufacturer because of potential risks to the fetus. Nevertheless this dangerous practice occurs and is associated with maternal health problems and a very high incidence of early-onset autism in the children. Postpartum vaccination with live virus vaccines has been recommended by the CDC, and described as 'convenient' by the vaccine manufacturer. This 'routine practice' may lead to health and is also associated with many health

A novel nonlive, adjuvanted herpes zoster subunit vaccine: a report on the emerging clinical data and safety profile.

Herpes zoster (HZ) is an acute vesicular dermatitis with a typical dermatomal distribution, caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), often preceded and accompanied by prodromal pain or pruritus. HZ may be related to several complications such as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). The incidence and severity of the disease increase with aging, due to immunosenescence and in particular to the decline of the specific cell-mediated immunity (CMI). The impact of HZ in terms of morbidity and short- and long-term complications, the availability of suboptimal treatment options to date, and the high costs

Ocular effects caused by viral infections and corresponding vaccines: An overview of varicella zoster virus, measles virus, influenza viruses, hepatitis B virus, and SARS-CoV-2.

Many viral infections can affect vision and the visual system. Vaccination to prevent diseases is commonplace today, acting by stimulating an immune response without developing the pathology. It involves the production of persisting antibodies against the pathogen and the activation of T cells. Certain diseases have already been eradicated by rigorous vaccination campaigns, while others are hoped to be eliminated soon. Vaccines currently available on the market are largely safe, even if they can rarely cause some adverse effects, such as ocular complications. Analyzing existing literature, we

Guidelines for preventing opportunistic infections among HIV-infected persons--2002. Recommendations of the U.S. Public Health Service and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

In 1995, the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) developed guidelines for preventing opportunistic infections (OIs) among persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV); these guidelines were updated in 1997 and 1999. This fourth edition of the guidelines, made available on the Internet in 2001, is intended for clinicians and other health-care providers who care for HIV-infected persons. The goal of these guidelines is to provide evidence-based guidelines for preventing OIs among HIV-infected adults and adolescents, including pregn

Combining tabular, rule-based, and procedural knowledge in computer-based guidelines for childhood immunization.

IMM/Serve is a computer program which implements the clinical guidelines for childhood immunization. IMM/Serve accepts as input a child's immunization history. It then indicates which vaccinations are due and which vaccinations should be scheduled next. The clinical guidelines for immunization are quite complex and are modified quite frequently. As a result, it is important that IMM/Serve's knowledge be represented in a format that facilitates the maintenance of that knowledge as the field evolves over time. To achieve this goal, IMM/Serve uses four representations for different parts of its k

A Comprehensive Review of Modern Cancer Therapies Utilizing Oncolytic Viruses.

Oncolytic viruses (OVs) are gaining traction as advanced tools in cancer therapy. They are distinguished by their ability to destroy malignant cells while sparing normal tissue specifically. In addition to their direct tumor-lysing properties, an essential benefit of oncolytic virus therapy is its capacity to activate both the innate and adaptive immune systems. To enhance these therapeutic actions, many OVs have been genetically engineered to encode immune-modulating factors that reestablish or strengthen antitumor immune responses. Recent studies show that combining OVs with other forms of i
