Anatomical sampling site is not associated with TAS2R38 gene expression in chronic rhinosinusitis: A cross-sectional RT-qPCR study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a complex inflammatory condition affecting the sinonasal mucosa. The bitter taste receptor T2R38 (encoded by TAS2R38) is expressed on ciliated respiratory epithelial cells, detecting bacterial quorum-sensing acyl-homoserine lactones to stimulate nitric oxide production and accelerate mucociliary clearance. However, whether mucosal TAS2R38 transcript levels vary across distinct sinonasal anatomical niches remains unverified, raising concerns regarding potential sampling bias in translational airway research. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether sinonasal

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis: a rare case of a critical lesion encompassing the conduction system and the heart valve.

PURPOSE: Anastomosis between posterior superior alveolar artery and infraorbital artery can go through bony canal in the lateral wall of the maxilla. This artery is called alveolar antral artery. It can complicate lateral sinus lift procedure by bleeding and hemosinus formation or bone graft wash out. The artery can also go in soft tissues where is not visible on cone beam computed tomography. In previous studies, the relation of this artery to sinus floor or alveolar process was measured. These structures are highly unstable during lifetime and after tooth loss. The aim of this study is to st

Maxillary sinus anatomic and pathologic CT findings in edentulous patients scheduled for sinus augmentation.

OBJECTIVES: An aberrant sinus anatomy or pathology can influence the sinus lift technique if it is encountered during surgical exposure. The purpose of the present study was to determine the prevalence of sinus disease and variations of normal anatomy among edentulous patients prior to sinus augmentation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 120 patients attending a private surgical practice (53 women and 67 men, with a mean age of 62.02 years, ranging between 34 and 81 years old) for whom treatment was planned for sinus augmentation were evaluated--medical history, radiographic and clinical examinations. Tumour necrosis factor inhibitor-associated sinusitis.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), rooted in holistic philosophy, features a "multicomponent, multitarget, multipathway" therapeutic model that has long posed challenges for modern scientific interpretation due to its inherent complexity. Studies elucidating its biological mechanisms have historically relied on correlation-based analytical paradigms. Although artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly introduced into TCM research, most current applications remain confined to disease classification, outcome prediction, or herb-target association mining, with limited capacity to reconst

Comparing different methods used to collect material for a microbiological evaluation of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

UNLABELLED: There is still controversy on which is the best method to collect the secretion directly from the middle meatus or maxillary sinus in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. AIM: To evaluate the prevalence of bacteria in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and compare the suction trap collector to direct aspiration attached to a syringe for the microbiological analysis of these secretions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective study involving 31 patients who underwent endoscopically guided maxillary secretion aspiration by two different methods (aspiration with the collector tube "su

Otorhinolaringologic manifestation of Smith-Magenis syndrome.

Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS) is a multiple congenital anomaly/mental retardation (MCA/MR) syndrome link to a contiguous-gene deletion syndrome, involving chromosome 1 7p 11.2,whose incidence is estimated to be 1:25,000 livebirth. SMS is characterised by a specific physical, behavioural and developmental pattern. The main clinical features consist of a broad flat midface with brachycefaly, broad nasal bridge, brachydactily, speech delay, hoarse deep voice and peripheral neuropathy. Behavioural abnormalities include hypermotility, self-mutilation and sleep disturbance. This report defines the ot

Transimplant antral lavage as minimally invasive treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis: Preliminary report of 11 consecutive cases.

OBJECTIVE: The present article reports how a dental implant with an internal port dental implant valve approach (DIVA) can be utilized as oroantral port to treat chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in a minimally invasive manner. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Eleven patients (age mean 68.1 years) with CRS were subjected to the transimplant lavage technique. For three patients the CRS treatment was performed via previously installed dental implants, and for another eight patients the implantation procedure was combined with the CRS treatment. The moment the implant was fully installed, the sinus membrane was

Bony nasolacrimal duct dehiscence in functional endoscopic sinus surgery: radiological study and discussion of surgical implications.

OBJECTIVES: To analyse the radiological features of the bony nasolacrimal duct before and after functional endoscopic sinus surgery, and document the incidence of surgically induced dehiscence. METHODS: A retrospective case series analysis was conducted of 63 consecutive patients who underwent uncinectomy as a part of 118 functional endoscopic sinus surgical procedures. All patients underwent pre- and post-operative computed tomography scans. Axial computed tomography images at the level of maxillary sinus were evaluated for the presence of bony nasolacrimal duct dehiscence, osteitis and comp

[Experience with treatment of chronic polypoid rhinosinusitis using low doses of clarithromycin in the postoperative period].

A total of 37 patients at the age from 25 to 65 years presenting with chronic polipoid rhinosinusitis (CPRS) were available for the observation. They were allocated to two groups based on the results of endoscopic polyposinusotomy. The patients in group 1 (n=18) were instructed at discharge from the clinic to take 250 mg of clarithromycin daily for 3 months in combination with the local application of a topical corticosteroid. The patients in group 2 (n=19) were prescribed topical corticosteroids alone. It was shown that clarithromycin at low doses caused significant stabilization of CPRS remi

Sinus floor elevation from a maxillary molar tooth extraction socket in a patient with chronic inflammation.

BACKGROUND: The compromised nature of the residual interradicular bone after extraction of periodontally hopeless maxillary molars often requires a sinus elevation procedure to ideally place the implants to accept future prosthesis. Maxillary sinus elevation surgery is a procedure used to increase the volume of bone mass so that dental implants can be placed. This article documents a sinus floor elevation technique through an extraction socket in a 65-year-old white male with chronic inflammation to increase the bone mass after the extraction of a periodontally involved maxillary molar tooth.

High-Grade Sinonasal Carcinoma: Classification Through Molecular Profiling.

High-grade sinonasal carcinomas are a cohort of malignant epithelial neoplasms arising in the sinonasal cavities with distinct, ominous morphologic features or lacking well-differentiated features that might otherwise classify them as less biologically worrisome. Recent advances in molecular profiling have led to the identification of several distinct tumor entities previously grouped together. These molecularly distinct lesions include NUT (midline) carcinoma, INI1 (SMARCB1)-deficient carcinoma, SMARCA4-deficient sinonasal carcinoma, and novel IDH-mutant sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma,

Minimally invasive transnasal medial maxillectomy for treatment of maxillary sinus and orbital pathologies.

CONCLUSION: Minimally invasive transnasal medial maxillectomy with preservation of the nasolacrimal duct may provide an alternative method for surgical treatment of selected maxillary sinus and inferior orbit pathology if more extensive endonasal or external approach procedures are to be avoided. OBJECTIVES: To present a modification of the transnasal endoscopic approach to the maxillary sinus leading through its medial wall, anteriorly to the nasolacrimal duct that considerably improves access to the antero-inferior part of the maxillary sinus and entire orbital floor. To discuss indications

[Orbital osteoma: clinical evaluation of nine cases].

INTRODUCTION: Osteoma of the nasosinus cavities, particularly the frontoethmoidal cavities, is often a fortuitous radiographic discovery. Potential complications include ophthalmological, sinusal, and endocranial disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Nine patients (five men and four women), mean age 24.3 years (18-43) presenting orbital osteoma were managed from 1994 to 1999. RESULTS: Clinical signs were dominated by ophthalmological disorders, basically non-reducible exophthalmia (n = 8). Two patients had permanent unilateral nasal obstruction and one had acute sinusitis. The bony orbital tumefa

Improved diagnosis and prognosis of mucormycosis. A clinicopathologic study of 33 cases.

Mucormycosis is an uncommon, frequently fatal, fungal infection which rarely arises in otherwise healthy people (15, 18, 92). An underlying disease, frequently diabetes mellitus, is almost always present. It appears stereotypically in different anatomic sites: paranasal, rhinoorbital, rhinocerebral, cerebral, pulmonary, and gastrointestinal areas; and in the soft tissue of the extremities. It can also appear as disseminated disease. Tissue invasion by the hyphae of mucormycosis must be seen microscopically to establish the diagnosis, but culture is required to identify the fungal species invol
