Using a clinical and psychopathological technique of examination the authors have investigated the mental condition of 232 patients with new cases of tuberculosis. Neurotic disturbances have been diagnosed in 64.7% of the patients, with asthenic and depressive syndromes constituting 84.7% of all mental disorders. Premorbid personality peculiarities are significantly correlated (p less than 0.001) with the incidence and nature of mental disorders, being most frequent in individuals with asthenic and psychoasthenic features. Observed were 117 patients with different neuroses (neurasthenia, hysteria, obsessive) involving intense vasoautonomic paroxysms of sympathetic-adrenal, vagoinsular and combined nature. The study was aimed at determining the role of cerebral dysfunction in exhaustion syndrome involving various disorders of feeding motivation (anorexia, bulimia). The article presents clinico-hemodynamic characteristics of 81 patients with initial disordered-circulatory atherosclerotic encephalopathy (33 aged 45-59 years and 48 aged 60-74 years) and of 65 patients with hypertensive encephalopathy (32 aged 45-59 years and 33 aged 60-74 years). Fifty-six normal subjects served as controls. The findings confirm the role of abnormalities at various functional levels of the circulatory system in the pathogenesis of cerebral vascular insufficiency at early stages of the disease.

The role of hyperventilation-induced shifts in the pathogenesis of different kinds of autonomic disorders (autonomic paroxysms, syncopal states, allergic signs) was investigated in 156 patients. This role should be considered in therapeutic interventions, especially in respiratory training aimed at correcting the respiratory pattern in order to achieve psychoautonomic stabilization. Distinct pathogenic mechanisms of combined hyperventilation and autonomic disorders are discussed.

A total of 110 patients with functional vocal disorders secondary to neurosis were examined. They included 50 patients with neurasthenia, 30 with hysteria, and 21 with obsessive neurosis. The pattern of vocal disorder had its own peculiarities in each form of neurosis. Major pharmacokinetic parameters of the Soviet anticonvulsive drug benzobarbital used with different regimens of administration (single and prolonged) are described. The authors have studied the interrelationship between benzobarbital and carbamazepine when these drugs are used in combination and drawn a conclusion as to their weak pharmacokinetic synergism. On the basis of the established pharmacokinetic parameters a number of practical inferences pertaining to the mode of benzobarbital administration have been made.

Microcirculatory vascular bed was sampled from dura mater of children under 1 year (healthy and with intracranial hypertension due to innate hydrocephalus) and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Micro- and macroscopy of the modular organization of microvasculature showed that the rise in intracranial pressure resulted in restructuring of the arteriolar bed, appearance of unusual vascular forms, volume expansion and changes in other parameters, especially in the inner layer of dura mater. Nineteen 5 to 12-weeks-old embryos from women abusing alcohol during pregnancy (alcoholism, habitual drinking) were studied. In 15 (79%) the brain development disorders were detected. Sixty-two craniovertebral dysplasy patients could be divided into three groups with respect to neurologic syndromes displaying disorders at different levels in a neurologic and X-rays investigation. The function of the sympathetic-adrenal system was studied by measuring umbilical cord blood catecholamines in 31 full-term newborns with perinatal asphyxia and evidence of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and in 20 normal newborns.
