Playing with a Stacked Deck: Literature Review and Case Series of Problem Gambling in Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Problem gambling (PG) is associated with significant personal and societal loss. These losses may be exacerbated when a person with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), who may not fully appreciate the inherent risks, engages in such behavior. Literature on this particular population is scarce, leaving the scientific community and treatment providers at a loss as to best practices. The present paper reviews three cases that illustrate common challenges faced by people with IDD and PG. Suggestions for effective prevention and treatment efforts are offered. Future directions includ

Autonomic Dysfunction in Parkinson's Disease: Cardiovascular Symptoms, Thermoregulation, and Urogenital Symptoms.

Parkinson's disease is characterized by motor, autonomic, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. These occur in varying degrees in all stages of the disease. Among the autonomic disorders, cardiovascular, urogenital, gastrointestinal, and thermoregulatory disorders are particularly relevant. Because of the significant impact on the quality of life, appropriate diagnostics and therapy should be carried out at all stages of the disease. Within cardiovascular disorders drop of blood pressure after orthostasis and nondipper behavior are very important, but also the influence of cardiovascular medication.

Blood donor satisfaction and the weak link in the chain of donation process.

Recruiting and retaining enough donors is a problem. Six hundred and thirty nine blood donors were interviewed to identify the elements that can influence their satisfaction and the decision to become regulars. The majority of them were satisfied with staff skill and communication, they declared they were calm before donating and felt well after donation. First-time donors (FTDs) were more frightened, showed anticipatory anxiety, were less sure they would donate again (p<0.01) and the youngest were also less satisfied with the staff's behavior after donation. Identifying the more scared FTDs a

Marital interaction of agoraphobic women: a controlled, behavioral observation study.

Married couples with a female agoraphobic spouse (n = 22) were compared with demographically similar community control couples (n = 21) on self-report and observational measures of marital interaction. Consistent with hypotheses, husbands of agoraphobic women were more critical of their wives than were control husbands, and clinical couples were less likely to engage in positive problem solution than control couples. Contrary to hypothesis, clinical husbands were not less supportive than control husbands. Where general measures of marital distress were concerned, clinical couples, relative to

Bulimia nervosa: 5-year social outcome and relationship to eating pathology.

From an original sample of 50 patients, 32 female patients with bulimia nervosa were followed up for a minimum length of 5 years. Standardized interviews were employed to assess eating attitudes and behavior as well as social status both at entry and at completion of the follow-up period. All participants completed the Social Problem Questionnaire at follow-up. Social outcome was found to parallel eating disorder outcome. Being in a satisfactory stable relationship was associated with good eating disorder outcome. Being in a stable relationship was not related to eating disorder outcome. Good

Naturalistic observation of adolescent tobacco use.

A naturalistic observation study of adolescent tobacco use was conducted to corroborate previous studies which used self-report questionnaire or structured interview methods to study this problem behavior. Several findings converged with previous accounts of adolescent tobacco use. For example, most use occurred in small groups. However, other findings diverged somewhat from previous research in that an unexpectedly low number of offers of tobacco was observed, nonusers were present in smoking groups, and solitary smoking was common. These data suggest that direct, normative social pressure to…

Predriving riders and drinking drivers.

A social learning model was used to investigate why young adolescents, 15 years of age and under, ride with drinking drivers. A total of 384 adolescents completed a self-report survey instrument. Zero-ordered correlations and regression procedures indicated that adolescents in this age group have a high frequency rate of riding with drinking drivers, and that social learning variables are important in explaining the behavior. Four of the five social learning subsets were accepted as significant in understanding the social dynamics of the problem. Prevention efforts that focus on predriving you

Pharmacological treatment of self-injurious behavior in mentally retarded persons.

Self-injury is a severe behavioral problem commonly observed in institutionalized mentally retarded individuals. While several forms of therapy are available, pharmacological treatment is most often used in institutions to control this behavior. This paper evaluated the clinical and experimental literature on the effects of pharmacotherapy for self-injury. Few general conclusions could be drawn mainly due to the small number of studies and the general lack of methodological rigor of these studies. However, there was some indication that antipsychotics and antimanics may prove to be useful in t

Twenty-seven strategies for teaching contraception to adolescents.

This article summarizes research on the effects of education on adolescents' contraceptive behaviors and suggests strategies to enhance teaching for contraception. Learning about birth control methods in sex education classes does not necessarily enable teenagers to use them effectively. In addition to needing accurate, unbiased information about contraceptive technology, teenagers need help in clarifying their values so that their social behaviors are congruent with their moral codes. Adolescents also benefit from understanding how contraception relates to sexual behavior and how family plann

Latent profiles of emotional and behavioral risks in children with intellectual disabilities: characteristics and associations with parenting styles.

PURPOSE: We aimed to identify heterogeneous emotional and behavioral patterns in children and adolescents with intellectual developmental disorder (intellectual disability) (ID) and to determine how these profiles are associated with different parenting styles. METHODS: Latent profile analysis was used to identify children's emotional and behavioral risk trajectories. One-way ANOVA assessed differences in parenting styles across the resulting behavioral risk profiles. Multinomial logistic regression investigated the associations of parenting styles with child profile membership. RESULTS: Ana

This study examined the efficacy of experiential play therapy in reducing behavioral problems among children with Conduct Disorder (CD). Between December 2022 and May 2024, a prospective clinical trial was conducted with 20 children aged 7-12 years (10 females, 10 males) diagnosed with CD according to DSM-5 criteria. The intervention involved eight weekly, 45-minute experiential play therapy sessions. The Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) measured changes in behavioral symptoms before therapy, after the fourth session, and following the eighth session. No pharmacological treatment was provided

Neurodevelopmental and behavioral outcomes of very preterm infants: latent profile analysis in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program.

BACKGROUND: Very preterm infants are at high risk for neurodevelopmental impairments. We used a child-centered approach (latent profile analysis [LPA]) to describe 2-year neurobehavioral profiles for very preterm infants based on cognitive, motor, and behavioral outcomes. We hypothesized that distinct outcome profiles would differ in the severity and co-occurrence of neurodevelopmental and behavioral impairment. METHODS: We studied children born <33 weeks' gestation from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Program with at least one neurobehavioral assessment at age 2 (Bayley

Different Categorizations of Women's Sexual Orientation Reveal Unique Health Outcomes in a Nationally Representative U.S. Sample.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority women (i.e., women minoritized for their sexualities) are identified as high risk for mental health and substance use problems; however, there is no consensus on the criteria by which women are categorized as sexual minority. Though there is some evidence suggesting that certain subgroups of women are at higher risk than others based on sexual orientation, different categorization schemes for sexual orientation have yet to be compared within the same sample. METHOD: Using data from the National Epidemiologic Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions-III (N = 19,528)

Impact of play restriction during the COVID-19 pandemic on mental well-being in children with a chronic condition.

UNLABELLED: This study is to investigate the effects of social restrictions, induced by the COVID-19 pandemic, on play behavior, and the associations with mental well-being in children with a chronic physical condition. Additionally, we explored potential moderating effects of environmental factors. Data from the PROactive cohort study including children with a chronic physical condition was used. Play behavior was measured with a self-developed questionnaire distributed during the pandemic with questions concerning behavior before and during the pandemic (with whom they most often played, whe

[Community organizations and fighting STDs, HIV and AIDS in Montreal: lessons for sub-Saharan Africa].

UNLABELLED: The HIV/AIDS pandemic is one of the most important public health problems in the world. In Benin as elsewhere in Africa, the combination of some sociological and sociocultural factors with socio-economic realities have led this pandemic to progress faster in some farming regions than in urban areas. This survey was performed during a three-month internship researching community-based organizations in Montreal that care for HIV/AIDS patients. OBJECTIVES: to analyse the actions taken by community-based organisations to combat this pandemic and point out the strengths and weaknesses

Electronic screen media for persons with autism spectrum disorders: results of a survey.

Social and anecdotal reports suggest a predilection for visual media among individuals on the autism spectrum, yet no formal investigation has explored the extent of that use. Using a distributed questionnaire design, parents and caregivers report on time allotted toward media, including observable behaviors and communicative responses. More time was spent engaged with electronic screen media (ESM) than any other leisure activity. Television and movie viewing was more popular than computer usage. Across media platforms, animated programs were more highly preferred. Prevalent verbal and physica

Behavioral effects of levodopa.

In recent years, levodopa-induced behavioral changes have received increased attention in the medical literature and in clinical practice. The spectrum of these symptoms includes non-motor fluctuations with neuropsychiatric symptoms, compulsive behaviors such as punding, dopamine dysregulation syndrome, and impulse control disorders, psychosis and hallucinations, as well as hypomania and mania. Despite knowledge of the clinical features associated with these behaviors, many of them are probably underdiagnosed. Although the mechanisms underlying behavioral symptoms are still incompletely unders

Analysis of the effects of task preferences, task demands, and adult attention on child behavior in outpatient and classroom settings.

Two studies were conducted with children who displayed behavior problems to evaluate the effects of task preference, task demands, and adult attention on child behavior. In Study 1, we conducted brief functional analyses in an outpatient clinic to identify variables that facilitated appropriate behavior. For 8 of 10 children, distinct patterns of performance occurred; 3 children displayed improved behavior with changes in task demands, 1 child displayed improved behavior with a preferred task, and 4 children displayed improved behavior with changes in adult attention. In most cases, the childr

Effects of social-skills training in a community-based program.

The effects of social-skills training upon the behavior of 8 previously institutionalized mentally retarded adults, residing in community group homes were evaluated. In comparison to a control group, the subjects who received training showed substantial changes in the desirable direction for each behavior. Generalization to unfamiliar situations was also noted. The problems in placing retarded clients in the community without social-skills training and the potential disadvantages of inadequate training were discussed.

A Gambling Financial Harm Screener (GFHS) for Payment Institutions: Multi-Method Development and Preliminary Validation.

Disordered gambling, a form of behavioral addiction characterized by persistent gambling despite harmful consequences, is inherently associated with financial harm. While established diagnostic instruments exist, they are primarily designed for clinical or gambling-service contexts and are not readily applicable within financial system infrastructures that process gambling-related transactions. The current study describes the development and initial validation of the Gambling Financial Harm Screener (GFHS), a psychometrically grounded instrument designed to assess gambling-related harm through
