Cholesteatoma is a well demarcated cystic lesion derived from an abnormal growth of keratinizing squamous epithelium in the temporal bone. BACKGROUND: Penetrating non-missile orbito-cranial injuries are uncommon civilian injuries which have some special features. Only limited case-reports are available in the international literature.
METHOD: We present a retrospective review of 18 such in presumed trivial orbital injury. Early identification and removal of retained foreign body fragments was achieved within 36 hours.
FINDINGS: Patients were operated on and followed up for at least of 3 years. The final clinical outcome was excellent: 16 had a Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) of 5 while in the remaining 2 it was 4.

Midline posterior fossa mass lesions in young adults are usually medulloblastomas, pilocytic astrocytomas, haemangioblastomas or ependymomas. We present clinical, imaging and intraoperative findings of an abscess occurring within the fourth ventricle which was associated with right chronic suppurative otitis media and right transverse sinus thrombosis. Sixteen patients with surgical infection of the posterior fossa are presented. There were 14 patients with cerebellar abscess, one patient with a solitary posterior fossa subdural empyema, and another with a combined cerebellar abscess and subdural empyema. Two of the cerebellar abscess patients also had supratentorial infections. The presenting features, aetiology, radiology and bacteriology are discussed with particular reference to differences in abscess re-accumulation, and outcome between those managed by aspiration and excision. OBJECTIVE: While high-velocity missile injury (gunshot) is associated with kinetic and thermal injuries, non-missile penetrating head injury (NMPHI) results in primary damage along the tract of the piercing object that can be associated with significant secondary complications. BACKGROUND: Mastoiditis is the most common intra-temporal complication of acute otitis media. Despite potentially lethal sequelae, optimal management remains poorly defined.
METHOD: A retrospective case review was conducted of children diagnosed with mastoiditis at a tertiary referral centre, in North East England, between 2010 and 2017.
RESULTS: Fifty-one cases were identified, 49 without cholesteatoma. Median patient age was 42 months (2 months to 18 years) and median hospital stay was 4 days (range, 0-27 days). There was no incidence trend over time. Imaging was conducted in 15 out of 49

The genus of Nocardia is rapidly expanding and the species distribution varies with different geographical locations. We retrospectively reviewed the laboratory records of the bacteriology laboratory at National Taiwan University Hospital from January 1998 to June 2008 to identify patients with nocardiosis.
