Posttraumatic complications in pediatric skull fracture: dural sinus thrombosis, arterial dissection, and cerebrospinal fluid leakage.

OBJECTIVE Skull fracture is associated with several intracranial injuries. The object of this study was to determine the rate of fracture as … ng, and temporal bone fracture was associated with being struck by or against an object (p < 0.05). Frontal bone fracture was more associated with being struck by or against an object and vehicle-related injury (p < 0.05) than with falling. Vehicle-related accidents and being struck by or against an object, as opposed to falling, were associated with increased …

Late onset cyclosporine-induced cerebral blindness with abnormal SPECT imagings in a patient undergoing unrelated bone marrow transplantation.

A 23-year-old woman underwent HLA-matched unrelated BMT for CML. She developed cerebral blindness on day 81. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed hyperintensity on a T2-weighted image in the white and gray matter of the right frontal and both occipital lobes. Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was consistent with a decrease in radionuclide uptake in these areas, suggesting a vasoconstrictive mechanism. A diagnosis of CsA-induced encephalopathy was made and CsA was discontinued. Her vision recovered completely after 24 h and abnormal imaging resolved within 2 weeks. This ca

A new juvenile Yamaceratops (Dinosauria, Ceratopsia) from the Javkhlant Formation (Upper Cretaceous) of Mongolia.

Here we report a new articulated skeleton of Yamaceratops dorngobiensis (MPC-D 100/553) from the Khugenetjavkhlant locality at the Shine Us Khudag (Javkhlant Formation, ?Santonian-Campanian) of the eastern Gobi Desert, Mongolia, which represents the first substantially complete skeleton and the first juvenile individual of this taxon. The specimen includes a nearly complete cranium and large portions of the vertebral column and appendicular skeleton. Its skull is about 2/3 the size of the holotype specimen, based on mandibular length. Its juvenile ontogenetic stage is confirmed by multiple ind

Clinico-anatomical classification of the processus condylaris mandibulae for traumatological purposes.

Mandible condyle fracture has been reported to constitute 9-45 % (Asprino and Consani, 2006), 14.1 % (Bataineh, 1998), 25-50 % (Silvennoinen, Iizuka, 1992), 32 % (Chrcanovic et al., 2004), and 38 % (Brasileiro and Passeri, 2006) of all mandible fractures (Kozakiewicz and Swiniarski, 2013). Small bone segments, limited available space for application of the fixation material and limited visibility of the operative field are common difficulties. To guarantee satisfactory treatment effects, anatomical reduction and proper fracture stability are necessary. The use of 3-4 screws in the upper sectio

Traumatic Falls in the Pediatric Population: Facial Fracture Patterns Observed in a Leading Cause of Childhood Injury.

PURPOSE: Falls are a leading cause of nonfatal injury in the pediatric population, resulting in numerous hospitalizations. Children may not have fully developed reflexive and balancing abilities, rendering them more susceptible to traumatic falls. Here the authors present their findings regarding patterns of facial fracture and concomitant injury seen in the pediatric population secondary to falls. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of all facial fractures as a result of falls in the pediatric population in a level 1 trauma center in an urban environment (University Hospital

Internal calvarial bone distraction in rabbits with delayed-onset coronal suture synostosis.

Recent studies have identified a subpopulation of craniosynostotic individuals who exhibit progressive or delayed-onset synostosis and mild craniofacial growth abnormalities. These individuals may be good candidates for nonextirpation, distraction osteogenesis therapy. The present study was designed to test this hypothesis by using internal calvarial bone distraction in a rabbit model with familial delayed-onset craniosynostosis. Data were collected from 159 rabbits: 71 normal controls, 72 with delayed-onset coronal suture synostosis, 8 with delayed-onset coronal suture synostosis and coronal

Orbital reconstruction and volume in the correction of proptosis after resection of spheno-orbital meningiomas.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of reconstruction and orbital volume on the reduction of proptosis in patients undergoing resection for spheno-orbital meningiomas. Additionally, potential predictors of optimal proptosis reduction after surgery were evaluated. METHODS: Patients with spheno-orbital meningiomas who underwent resection at the authors' institution between 2005 and 2020 were evaluated retrospectively. The exophthalmos index (EI) was measured on pre- and postoperative imaging to quantify proptosis and calculate the primary outcome measure of proptos

Custom made bioceramic implants in complex and large cranial reconstruction: a two-year follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Large cranial defects still represent a challenge in neurosurgery. Currently different biomaterials are available for cranial reconstruction including titanium, acrylic mesh and different types of calcium phosphate-based bone grafts. The goal of surgery is a perfect fit of the implant without infection and absorption, and a good aesthetic result. This paper describes a surgical method for cranioplasty, using a customised porous hydroxyapatite (HA) prosthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty patients treated surgically with a customised porous-HA prosthesis for large cranial defects

Impact of foot orthoses hindfoot and forefoot wedges on foot and ankle kinematics: A cadaveric study.

INTRODUCTION: Foot orthoses (FOs) are widely prescribed to manage musculoskeletal and inflammatory disorders affecting the lower limbs by modifying foot and ankle biomechanics. While the addition of medial wedges to FOs is believed to enhance control of pronation-related movements, few studies have quantified their isolated kinematic effects under controlled experimental conditions. The use of cadaveric models allows for precise measurement of bone motion without soft tissue artifacts. Therefore, this study aimed to quantify the effects of 3D-printed FOs with and without a medial hindfoot-fore

Single-baseline virtual progression modeling of Crowe type I-III developmental dysplasia of the hip: a finite element study of stress-location migration.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip alters acetabular morphology and load transfer, but classification-related changes in local stress distribution remain incompletely understood. METHODS: A Crowe type I finite element model was directly reconstructed from one patient's pelvic computed tomography data. Crowe type II and III models were subsequently generated from the same anatomical baseline as standardized, classification-consistent virtual morphologies rather than independent patient-specific cases. This single-baseline, internally controlled design was used to reduce inter-indiv

Influence of Hearing Rehabilitation With Active Middle Ear and Bone Conduction Implants on Postural Control.

BACKGROUND: As audition also seems to contribute to balance control, additionally to visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular information, we hypothesize that hearing rehabilitation with active middle ear and bone conduction implants can influence postural control. METHODS: In a prospective explorative study, the impact of hearing rehabilitation with active middle ear [Vibrant Soundbrige (VSB), MED-EL, Innsbruck, Austria] and bone conduction implants [Bonebridge (BB), MED-EL, Innsbruck, Austria] on postural control in adults was examined in three experiments. Vestibulospinal control was measure

Reappraisal of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma: novel morphologic observations of the hyaline cartilage and endochondral ossification and beta-catenin, Sox9, and osteocalcin immunostaining of 22 cases.

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, a rare malignant round cell and hyaline cartilage tumor, is most commonly intraosseous but can occur in extraskeletal sites. We intensively observed the morphology and applied Sox9 (master regulator of chondrogenesis), beta-catenin (involved in bone formation, thought to inhibit chondrogenesis in a Sox9-dependent manner), and osteocalcin (a marker for osteoblastic phenotype) to 22 central nervous system and musculoskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. Cases of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma were retrieved and reviewed from our files. Immunohistochemistry and follow-up we
