Relationship of Lesion Location to Postoperative Steroid Use in Eosinophilic Chronic Rhinosinusitis.

OBJECTIVES: Eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) is known to recur after surgery. The treatment choice for recurrent ECRS, such as oral steroids or biological agents, must be chosen carefully, and identifying the lesion location may be useful. This study aimed to evaluate the postoperative course of ECRS patients and assess the relationship between endoscopic lesion location and postoperative oral steroid use. METHODS: Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis who underwent bilateral endoscopic sinus surgery from April 2018 to March 2020 were divided into two groups based on the presence or

Clinical Presentation and Outcome of Sinonasal Extraosseous Plasmacytoma in Denmark: A Nationwide Cohort From 1980 to 2017.

OBJECTIVES: Extraosseous plasmacytoma (EOP) is a rare plasma cell neoplasm that tends to convert to plasma cell myeloma (PCM) in about 11% to 35% of cases. It has a predilection for the upper respiratory tract, prototypically affecting the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Contemporary first-line treatment is radiotherapy, with more recent studies showing an added benefit of combining radiation with surgery. In this cohort study, we aimed to examine clinical presentation, treatment, and prognosis for all patients nationwide from 1980 through 2017. Furthermore, we determined the size and exte

Sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma: a population-based analysis of 694 cases.

BACKGROUND: Currently, limited literature exists about sinonasal adenoid cystic carcinoma (SNACC). In this study, we analyze the demographics, survival, and treatment efficacy of this rare entity. METHODS: Our study was a retrospective population-based analysis of SNACC in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database assessing the 40-year time-frame of 1973 to 2013. RESULTS: Six hundred ninety-four SNACC patients were identified; 53.2% were female and 46.8% were male. Caucasians were most commonly affected (77.1%). SNACC most often arose from the maxillary sinuses, followe

The sphenoid sinus, foramen rotundum and vidian canal: a radiological study of anatomical relationships.

INTRODUCTION: The sphenoid sinus is an important structure in ventral skull base surgeries that is surrounded by several vital anatomical structures including the internal carotid arteries, optic nerve and cranial nerves inside the cavernous sinus. In addition, the foramen rotundum is a small canal deeply situated in the base of the skull, which represents the way for exit of the maxillary nerve. Understanding of the sphenoid bone anatomical relationships is central to the expanded endonasal approaches to the skull base. OBJECTIVE: To record and analyze the measurement indexes of the sphenoid

Synthetic bone substitute engineered with amniotic epithelial cells enhances bone regeneration after maxillary sinus augmentation.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has been provided that a cell-based therapy combined with the use of bioactive materials may significantly improve bone regeneration prior to dental implant, although the identification of an ideal source of progenitor/stem cells remains to be determined. AIM: In the present research, the bone regenerative property of an emerging source of progenitor cells, the amniotic epithelial cells (AEC), loaded on a calcium-phosphate synthetic bone substitute, made by direct rapid prototyping (rPT) technique, was evaluated in an animal study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two blocks of syn

Risk factor analysis following maxillary sinus augmentation: a retrospective multicenter study.

PURPOSE: Implant-supported rehabilitation of the atrophic posterior maxilla often necessitates maxillary sinus surgery to augment existing bone volumes. Recent systematic reviews have reported implant survival rates above 90% following sinus elevation. However, statistical assessment of the effect of anatomic factors, implant design and surface, individual risk factors, and complications related to sinus floor elevation procedures on implant survival through analyzing patient data has not yet been performed. The aim of this study is to identify risk factors that might affect implant survival f

Improved outcome of zygomycosis in patients with hematological diseases?

Zygomycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection that is increasingly reported in hematological patients. We describe 2 cases of successfully treated rhino-cerebral zygomycosis and give an overview of 120 patients from the literature with underlying hematological or oncological disorders. These data document the improved survival in sinus (15/17 patients surviving) and cutaneous (6/9 patients surviving) disease. Hematological patients with pulmonary (9/30 patients surviving) or disseminated (4/38 patients surviving) zygomycosis still have a poor prognosis. The clinical course of sinus-orbital

Comparing the effects of Bone+B® xenograft and InterOss® xenograft bone material on rabbit calvaria bone defect regeneration.

BACKGROUND: The bone regeneration therapy is often used in patients with inadequate bone support for implants, particularly following tooth extractions. Xenografts derived from animal tissues are effective bone reconstructive options that resist resorption and pose a low risk of transmitting disease. Therefore, these implants may be a good option for enhancing and stabilizing maxillary sinuses. The purpose of this study was to compare two xenografts, Bone+B® and InterOss®, for the reconstruction of rabbit calvaria defects. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The study involved seven male New Zealand white

Differentiation between IgG4-related Mikulicz disease and Sjögren's syndrome: A review case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: IgG4-related diseases cause lesions in various organs throughout the body. In otorhinolaryngology, IgG4-related Mikulicz's disease is suspected and diagnosed based on the presence of lesions of the head and neck, salivary and lacrimal gland enlargement, and bilateral sinus opacity concentrated on the maxillary sinuses. However, in some cases, it is necessary to consider about differentiation between IgG4-related Mikulicz's disease and Sjögren syndrome. PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSIS: A 75-years-old male patient visited our hospital with bilateral otitis media with effusion, which w

[Inverted papilloma: a study of 13 cases in the Oto-Rhino-Laryngology at the National University Hospital of Fann].

INTRODUCTION: Inverted Papilloma (IP) is a rare benign tumour of the nose and paranasal sinuses histologically characterized by invagination of the outer layer of the epithelium in the underlying chorion. Its most distinctive feature is a strong local aggressiveness, a tendency to recur and an unpredictable risk of association with epidermoid carcinoma. The purpose of this study was to report the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical data as well as to assess the outcomes of endoscopic endonasal surgery. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on a series of 13 patients whose data were

[Malignant melanoma of the maxillary sinus--a case report].

Malignant melanoma is a common disease in dermatology. Especially the skin exposed to the sun is frequently affected. Primary tumors of the same entity in the respiratory mucosa is very rare. We report about a 80 year old man, who came into our clinic with recurrent epistaxis and a nasal congestion on the right side. Attendant, a protrusio of the right bulbus could be seen. After obtaining biopsies the diagnosis of a malignant melanoma of the right maxillary sinus was obvious. We sent the patient to primary radiotherapy with a total dose of 59,4 Gy. With this therapy all clinical symptoms, the

Phaeohyphomycosis caused by the fungal genera Bipolaris and Exserohilum. A report of 9 cases and review of the literature.

We have reported 7 new cases of Bipolaris infection and 2 of Exserohilum infection, which demonstrate the capability of these 2 genera to cause invasive as well as "allergic" disease. As noted previously, it is likely that all of the cases of "Helminthosporium" and Drechslera infections reported in the literature were caused by Bipolaris or Exserohilum. Infections due to these 2 genera are probably more common than previously recognized. They should be included in the differential diagnosis of central nervous system and disseminated fungal disease, sinusitis, keratitis, peritonitis associated
