Effectiveness of the Incredible Years Parenting Program for Families with Socioeconomically Disadvantaged and Ethnic Minority Backgrounds.

Families with socioeconomically disadvantaged and ethnic minority backgrounds are often hard to reach for the prevention and treatment of disruptive child behavior problems. We examined whether the Incredible Years parenting intervention can successfully reach and benefit families with socioeconomic disadvantaged and ethnic minority backgrounds in the Netherlands. One hundred fifty-four families from a wide range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds were recruited in an outpatient clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry and in elementary schools serving deprived neighborhoods. Children who run away from home: risks for suicidal behavior and substance misuse.

PURPOSE: The primary aim of this study is to examine the extent to which running away from home as a child is associated with behavioral problems and victimization during childhood and with suicidal behavior and substance abuse during early adulthood. METHODS: A random probability sample comprising 7,461 respondents was interviewed for the 2007 survey of psychiatric morbidity of adults in England. A subsample of 16- to 34-year-old individuals was selected for secondary analysis (N = 2,247). All survey respondents were asked whether they had run away from home and asked specific questions on b

Neural activity to a partner's facial expression predicts self-regulation after conflict.

BACKGROUND: Failure to self-regulate after an interpersonal conflict can result in persistent negative mood and maladaptive behaviors. Research indicates that lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) activity is related to emotion regulation in response to laboratory-based affective challenges, such as viewing emotional pictures. This suggests that compromised LPFC function may be a risk factor for mood and behavior problems after an interpersonal conflict. However, it remains unclear whether LPFC activity to a laboratory-based affective challenge predicts self-regulation in real life. METHODS: We in

Community characteristics and substance-free activity and service access predict membership in alcohol use disorder risk profiles.

OBJECTIVE: Community characteristics (e.g., alcohol access, poverty) are associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) at the population level, and person-level AUD severity indicators (e.g., drinking practices, problems) predict heterogeneity in individual AUD risk profiles and recovery outcomes. Guided by behavioral economic theory, this study investigated whether residing in relatively enriched communities with substance-free reward sources, greater health/behavioral health care access, lower alcohol access, and less poverty were associated with less risky individual AUD risk profiles. METHOD

Self-Control Buffers the Association Between Aggression and Problematic Internet Gaming in Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Problematic internet gaming is an increasing mental health concern in adolescence; however, not all individuals exposed to known risk factors develop maladaptive gaming behaviors. Although aggression and self-control have each been linked to gaming-related problems, their interactive effects remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: This study examined whether self-control moderates the association between aggression and problematic internet gaming among adolescents. Baseline data from 1,914 first-grade middle school students participating in the internet gaming disorder cohort st

Mental Health and Functional Outcomes in Young Adulthood of Children With Psychotic Symptoms: A Longitudinal Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood psychotic symptoms have been associated with various psychiatric disorders in adulthood but their role as early markers of poor outcomes during the crucial transition to adulthood is largely unknown. Therefore, we investigated associations between age-12 psychotic symptoms and a range of mental health problems and functional outcomes at age 18. METHODS: Data were used from the Environmental Risk Longitudinal Twin Study, a nationally representative birth cohort of 2232 twins born in 1994-1995 in England and Wales, followed to age 18 with 93% retention. Dimensions and subtypes of oppositionality and their relation to comorbidity and psychosocial characteristics.

The symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), or oppositionality, seem to constitute a three-dimensional structure of angry/irritable, vindictiveness and argumentative behavior dimensions. Also, subjects with oppositionality are characterized by different comorbidity and longitudinal trajectories, suggesting that they could be divided into subtypes. This study is the first to examine the dimensions and subtypes of oppositionality in Nordic children. Study participants included 3435 children aged 7-10 years from the Danish National Birth Cohort. Information was collected using the Develo

Problem gambling severity and the incidence of Axis I psychopathology among older adults in the general population.

To examine the longitudinal relationship between past-year problem-gambling severity and incident Axis I psychopathology among older adults (aged 55-90), analyses were conducted on data from the National Epidemiologic Study of Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). This nationally-representative population-based survey was conducted in two waves (Wave 1, 2000-2001; and Wave 2, 2004-2005). Past-year problem-gambling severity at Wave 1 and incident Axis I psychopathology at Wave 2 were evaluated with the Alcohol Use Disorder and Associated Disabilities Interview Schedule-Diagnostic and Statist

[The differential classification of school avoidance- a cluster-analytic investigation].

OBJECTIVE: We investigated subtypes of school-avoiding children and adolescents in a German sample using cluster analysis. METHOD: 169 outpatients of a specialized outpatient unit for children and adolescents with school-avoiding behavior were subjected to cluster analysis using factor scores (principal factoring, varimax-rotation: measures of internalizing and externalizing symptoms, e.g., CBCL, YSR, and variables indicating the quality of school avoiding behavior, such as initial parental knowledge of school absence, activities during school absence). The resulting clusters were compared to

The psychosocial problems of children with narcolepsy and those with excessive daytime sleepiness of uncertain origin.

BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy is a predominantly rapid eye movement sleep disorder with onset usually in the second decade but often in earlier childhood. Classically it is characterized by combinations of excessive sleepiness especially sleep attacks, cataplexy, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep paralysis. The psychosocial effects of this lifelong condition are not well documented, especially in children. This study aims to describe the psychosocial profile of a large group of children with narcolepsy compared with other excessively sleepy children and controls. METHODS: We used an international

Family influences on adolescent gambling behavior: a review of the literature.

Gambling, and gambling related problems, are recognized as an emerging health issue among adolescents. Adolescent gambling is associated with numerous individual, social, and family characteristics. This paper provides a review of 21 empirical studies published between 1997 and 2008 that examine family influences on adolescent gambling behavior. Family influences on gambling behavior are conceptualized in the following five domains: (1) family sociodemographic factors, (2) general family climate, (3) family members' attitudes and behaviors, (4) parenting practices, and (5) family relationship

Disruptive behavior disorders.

Disruptive behavior disorders present grave complications to normal childhood development. Their presence is frequently associated with additional psychiatric disorders. The hallmark features of the disruptive behavior disorders range from noncompliance to aggressive hostility toward authorities or peers. Oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder are associated with dysfunctional parenting styles and other environmental risks. Temperament and psychobiological mechanisms also play roles in the expression of disruptive behavior. Longitudinal re

Jaundice and behavioral organization in the full-term neonate.

Hyperbilirubinemia is the most common problem experienced by full-term neonates during the first days of life. The short-term behavioral sequelae in infants with mild hyperbilirubinemia not requiring phototherapy were investigated by means of the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale. The behavioral integrity of 76 mildly jaundiced infants (maximum serum bilirubin 200-250 mumol/l) was compared with that of 401 control infants without clinical signs of hyperbilirubinemia (maximum serum bilirubin less than 100 mumol/l). The two groups differed on 12 of the 28 scale items reflecting five

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) is a severe public health problem, and currently, there is no FDA-approved medication for its treatment. Atypical dopamine (DA) transporter (DAT) inhibitors display low addictive liability by themselves and may have therapeutic potential for treatment of psychostimulant use disorders. Here, we report that RDS-04-010, a novel atypical DAT inhibitor that binds to an inward-facing conformation of DAT due to its sulfoxide moiety, displayed distinct pharmacological profiles in animal models of addiction from its sulfide analog, RDS-03-094, a DAT inhibitor that binds to a

Acute Lipopolysaccharide Switches the Selection of Maternal Behavior to Predatory Behavior in Female Rats.

OBJECTIVES: A common problem during the postpartum period and during lactation is being affected by infection due to Gram-negative bacteria. In this situation, a sick mother needs to choose between caring for her pups or the need for survival. This study analyzed the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sickness behavior on selection between maternal behavior (MB) and predatory behavior (PB) in lactating rats. To assess the LPS-induced sickness behavior, the plasma tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels were measured. METHODS: Lactating rats received 100 µg/kg LPS or saline solution on
