Sentinel lymph node biopsy in cutaneous melanoma of the head and neck using the indocyanine green SPY Elite system.

PURPOSE: Lymph node status is the single most important prognostic factor for patients with early-stage cutaneous melanoma. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has become the standard of care for intermediate depth melanomas. Modern SLNB implementation includes technetium-99 lymphoscintigraphy combined with local administration of a vital blue dye. However, sentinel lymph nodes may fail to localize in some cases and false-negative rates range from 0 to 34%. Here we demonstrate the feasibility of a new sentinel lymph node biopsy technique using indocyanine green (ICG) and the SPY Elite near-infra

Narrow-Band Imaging Improves Detection of Colorectal Peritoneal Metastases: A Clinical Study Comparing Advanced Imaging Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal peritoneal metastases (PM) are often diagnosed in an advanced disease stage. Cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) improve survival of patients with colorectal PM, although most benefit is seen in patients with limited peritoneal disease. Advanced imaging techniques might improve the detection of PM, potentially leading to earlier diagnosis and improved cytoreduction. This prospective clinical trial compared three advanced techniques with conventional white-light imaging for the detection of colorectal PM: narrow-band imaging (NBI), near-inf

Assessing large-vessel endothelial permeability using near-infrared fluorescence imaging--brief report.

OBJECTIVE: Loss of endothelial barrier function in arterial blood vessels is characteristic of vascular pathologies, including atherosclerosis. Here, we present a near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) imaging methodology for quantifying endothelial permeability and macromolecular uptake in large arteries in the mouse and evaluate its applicability for studying mechanisms of vascular inflammation. APPROACH AND RESULTS: To validate the NIRF methodology, macrovascular inflammation was induced in C57bl/6 mice by local tumor necrosis factor-α stimulation of the carotid artery or in apolipoprotein E-de

Test-retest reliability of skeletal muscle oxygenation measurements during submaximal cycling exercise in patients with chronic heart failure.

The potential purpose of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a clinical application in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) is the identification of limitations in O2 delivery or utilization during exercise. The objective of this study was to evaluate absolute and relative test-retest reliability of skeletal muscle oxygenation measurements in patients with CHF. Thirty patients with systolic heart failure (left ventricular ejection fraction 31 ± 8%) performed 6-min constant-load cycling tests at 80% of the anaerobic threshold (AT) with tissue saturation index (TSI) measurement at the vast

Detection of sentinel lymph nodes in minimally invasive surgery using indocyanine green and near-infrared fluorescence imaging for uterine and cervical malignancies.

OBJECTIVES: Our primary objective was to assess the detection rate of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) using indocyanine green (ICG) and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging for uterine and cervical malignancies. METHODS: NIR fluorescence imaging for the robotic platform was obtained at our institution in 12/2011. We identified all cases planned for SLN mapping using fluorescence imaging from 12/2011-4/2013. Intracervical ICG was the fluorophobe in all cases. Four cc (1.25mg/mL) of ICG was injected into the cervix alone divided into the 3- and 9-o'clock positions, with 1 cc deep into the strom

Optical topography can predict occurrence of watershed infarction during carotid endarterectomy: technical case report.

BACKGROUND: The major risk of CEA is perioperative stroke. NIRS can detect ischemic changes during CEA; however, possible watershed-type perfusion defects may not be detected by single-channel NIRS occurring at some distance from the light source. In the present case, we tested the usefulness of optical topography (ie, multichannel NIRS, OT) for this purpose. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient (64-year-old man) exhibited nonsymptomatic 80% stenosis of the right ICA with normal cerebral perfusion. CEA was performed to prevent cerebral infarction. We used single-channel NIRS and OT for monitoring of

Laser fragmentation of MoS2 in ethanol: MoO3- x coatings, oxygen vacancies, and photoluminescence with NIR heating.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides such as MoS2 are attractive optical nanomaterials because they can exhibit photoluminescence and light-to-heat conversion within the same colloidal system. Here, we synthesize surfactant-free Mo-based nanocolloids by picosecond pulsed laser ablation of a bulk MoS2 target in ethanol followed by laser-induced colloidal fragmentation. HRTEM shows that the ablation step initially yields 2H-MoS2 nanosheets with an interplanar spacing of 0.274 nm (assigned to the (100) planes), while subsequent fragmentation produces 12.3 ± 1.7 nm fullerene-like core-

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Recognition Using the fNIRS Dual-Attention Network.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent psychological disorder that can impair daily functioning and mental health. Current clinical assessment mainly relies on structured interviews and symptom scales, which may introduce subjectivity and inter-rater variability. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) provides a noninvasive approach for measuring task-evoked hemodynamic responses and may offer objective physiological information for auxiliary PTSD recognition. NEW METHOD: This study proposes an end-to-end deep learning framework, the fNIRS Dual Attention Netwo

Error-diagnosis-guided cross-indicator adaptive calibration for near-infrared spectroscopic multi-property prediction of coal quality.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) coal-quality datasets often contain many repeated spectra acquired from the same coal samples. Ignoring the coal-sample group structure and indicator-dependent error patterns may compromise the reliability of generalization assessment and calibration stability. To address this issue, this study proposes an error-diagnosis-guided cross-indicator adaptive calibration (ED-CIAC) method for NIRS-based multi-property prediction of coal quality. ED-CIAC performs coal-sample-group-level modeling by robustly aggregating repeated spectra and integrating complementary sp

Sex Differences in Prefrontal Oxygenation and Neuromuscular Fatigue to Incremental Cycling and Cognitive Testing Lead to Similar Cognitive Performance.

PURPOSE: Cognitive-motor dual-task performance is prevalent in many sports and appears to be impaired during high-intensity exercise, in association with central fatigue and cerebral deoxygenation. However, the extent to which these responses differ between males and females remains unknown. METHODS: Forty-eight well-trained adults (16 females) performed an incremental cycling test with a sustained-attention Mackworth task. The protocol consisted of 3-min ramp stages (starting at 1 W·kg -1, +0.4 W·kg -1 per stage) until an "extremely strong" perceived exertion was achieved (Borg CR100, task-f

Comparative effects of resistance- and assistance-based robot training on brain activation and motor recovery in stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a significant cause of disability worldwide, often resulting in persistent upper-limb dysfunction. Robot-assisted therapy has emerged as an effective rehabilitation strategy by enabling intensive, repetitive, and task-specific training. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of resistance- versus assistance-based robotic interventions on brain activation and motor recovery in patients with stroke, as these effects remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: Twenty-five adults with hemiparetic stroke were randomized to a resistance-based robot training group (R

The Effect of Blood Flow Restriction Training on Rock Climbing Performance, Forearm Blood Oxygenation and Cardiovascular Responses.

Blood flow restriction (BFR) training elicits cardiovascular and muscular adaptations across exercise modalities, but its potential to enhance performance in sport-specific tasks such as climbing remains unclear. This investigation focused on sport climbing, examining the effects of incorporating BFR training on performance and hemodynamic adaptation. Rock climbers (n = 25); age 26.3 ± 4.1, weight 66.1 ± 8.5 kg, participated in a 6-week intervention, training 2-3x per week with 3 sets of climbing to voluntary failure lasting 106 ± 28s across all exercise sets. A BFR and non-BFR (NBFR) group we
