We sought to define the gustatory neural representation in primates for stimuli that humans describe as predominantly bitter. Thus we analyzed the responses of single neurons from the insular cortex of two alert, male cynomolgus macaques in response to the oral application of four basic taste stimuli (glucose, NaCl, HCl, and quinine HCl) and fruit juice, and to a series of 15 other chemicals to which humans ascribe a bitter component. Gustatory neurons occupied a volume of 109 mm3 across an area of 4.0 mm in the anterposterior plane, 4.4 mm in the mediolateral, and 6.2 mm in the dorsoventral.

Consideration of nutritional factors as determinants of oral microbial ecology leads to the conclusion that endogenous factors play a dominant role. It is the interactions between specific microorganisms and nutritional and other factors provided by the host that selectively determine the kinds of microorganisms which willinitially reside in the oral cavity and the sites which they will colonize. The persistence of these original "colonists" in their respective ecologic niches will depend in part on the accessibility of endogenous nutrients variously provided by saliva, tissue exudates, crevic

Considering that practically all reactions that involve nucleotides also involve metal ions, it is evident that the coordination chemistry of nucleotides and their derivatives is an essential corner stone of biological inorganic chemistry. Nucleotides are either directly or indirectly involved in all processes occurring in Nature. It is therefore no surprise that the constituents of nucleotides have been chemically altered-that is, at the nucleobase residue, the sugar moiety, and also at the phosphate group, often with the aim of discovering medically useful compounds. Among such derivatives a

Two experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that there are interactive effects of feed intake and fiber type on energy and nutrient digestibility in growing pigs. In Exp. 1, twelve barrows with an initial body weight (BW) of 34.0 kg (SD = 2.6) were allotted to a 2 × 3 factorial arrangements consisting of two daily feeding levels (9.0% and 4.5% × BW0.75) and three experimental diets in a replicated 6 × 4 incomplete Latin square design with six treatments and four periods. The experimental diets were a corn-soybean meal-based diet, a diet containing 30% sugar beet pulp (SBP, soluble di

Sucrose non-fermenting-1 (SNF1)-related protein kinase 2 (SnRK2) members are central regulators in the abscisic acid signaling pathway and orchestrate plant drought stress responses. However, the functional diversity and mechanistic specificity among SnRK2 family members in wheat remain underexplored. This study reports TaSnRK2.8-5A, a nucleus-localized SnRK2 member in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), whose transcription level was significantly upregulated under 12-h drought stress, with a 2.6-fold increase in leaves and 3.6-fold increase in roots compared with control conditions (P < 0.05), indi

UNLABELLED: Microbial adaptation to fluctuating nutrient and oxygen conditions requires coordinated regulation of the metabolic network to maintain redox homeostasis within physicochemical and energetic constraints. While oxygen-dependent responses in Propionibacterium freudenreichii (PFR) have been characterized at the transcriptomic level, the role of carbon source in defining system-level metabolic states remains unclear. Here, we investigated carbon source-dependent metabolic reprogramming and cofactor biosynthesis in PFR strain DSM 20271T using label-free quantitative proteomics integrate

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most prevalent metabolic disorders of pregnancy. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are a complex and highly heterogeneous group of compounds formed from amino acids and reducing sugars. High-AGE diet exposure during pregnancy may cause adverse effects.
AIM: To investigate the expression levels of AGE and AGE receptor (RAGE) in the serum and placenta of pregnant women with GDM and to assess the association of their mediated oxidative stress response with perinatal outcomes.
METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed the clin

BACKGROUND: Teasel gourd is an important, indigenous, vegetatively propagated, high-value, underutilized cucurbit vegetable crop grown in South and Southeast Asia. Due to its wider adaptability, it is grown from plains to mid-hills. The crop is lacking in research, primarily related to the extent of genetic diversity in the region and crop improvement, which is further constrained by dioecism. To assess the genetic diversity in male and female populations of teasel gourd based on morphological traits and microsatellite makers and the response of AgNO3 to induce monocliny, seventy genotypes, in

BACKGROUND: Diabetic gastroparesis (DGP), characterized by delayed gastric emptying and impaired motility, poses significant therapeutic challenges due to its complex neural and molecular pathophysiology. Emerging evidence suggests that electroacupuncture (EA) at ST36 modulates gastrointestinal function; however, the precise neuromolecular pathways underlying its efficacy in DGP remain incompletely defined.
AIM: To elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying EA at ST36 improving DGP gastric motility through the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS)-vagal axis.
METHODS: The DGP model was establishe

Cyclic AMP (cAMP) receptor protein (Crp) is an important transcriptional regulator of Yersinia pestis Expression of crp increases during pneumonic plague as the pathogen depletes glucose and forms large biofilms within lungs. To better understand control of Y. pestis Crp, we determined a 1.8-Å crystal structure of the protein-cAMP complex. We found that compared to Escherichia coli Crp, C helix amino acid substitutions in Y. pestis Crp did not impact the cAMP dependency of Crp to bind DNA promoters. To investigate Y. pestis Crp-regulated genes during plague pneumonia, we performed RNA sequenci

BACKGROUND: Ketosis-resistant diabetes is a syndrome that has undergone numerous classification schemes in the past. In 1979, the National Diabetes Data Group (NDDG) introduced an association of malnutrition and diabetes. In 1985, the World Health Organization (WHO) created a new diabetes category called malnutrition-related diabetes mellitus (MRDM). MRDM consisted of two subclasses: fibrocalculous pancreatic diabetes (FCPD) and protein-deficient pancreatic diabetes (PDPD). Ketosis-resistant diabetes of the young (KRDY) was included in the subclass of PDPD. We report a rare case of a 37-year-o
