Repair of Frontoethmoidal Encephalocele in the Philippines: An Account of 30 Cases Between 2008-2013.

BACKGROUND: Frontoethmoidal encephalocele is a congenital abnormality of the anterior skull base involving herniation of cranial contents through a midline skull defect. Patency of the foramen cecum, along with other multifactorial variables, contributes to the development of frontoethmoidal encephaloceles. Because of limited resources, financial constraints, and lack of surgical expertise, repair of frontoethmoidal encephaloceles is limited in developing countries. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2013 an interdisciplinary team composed of neurosurgeons, craniofacial surgeons, otolaryngologists, pl

Optical neuronavigation facilitates transcranial surgical access to the equine pituitary gland.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of an optical neuronavigation-guided transcranial approach to the equine pituitary gland, compare pituitary tissue acquisition using MRI versus CT guidance, and assess an automated tissue resection device versus a standard biopsy needle. METHODS: 13 equine cadaver heads from horses euthanized for reasons unrelated to the study were used. A fiducial array was secured to the frontal bone before imaging; 7 heads underwent CT, and 6 heads underwent MRI. Images were imported into a neuronavigation system for 3-D reconstruction, surgical planning, and registra…

Effect of transfemoral prosthetic suspension on static and dynamic postural control: A comparison between socket-prostheses and bone-anchored limbs.

BACKGROUND: Transfemoral amputation results in increased fall risk in part through compromised postural control and greater between-limb asymmetry compared to people without amputation. Bone-anchored limbs (BAL) are a rising alternative to socket-type prostheses that may alter postural control. RESEARCH QUESTION: How do static and dynamic postural control and between-limb symmetry compare for people with unilateral transfemoral amputation using a socket-type prosthesis or a BAL? METHODS: Twenty-six people with transfemoral amputation (10 socket/16 BAL) were tested during quiet standing and o

Increasing Rate of Pott's Puffy Tumor Hospitalizations Among US Children.

BACKGROUND: Pott's puffy tumor is a rare complication of sinusitis characterized by osteomyelitis of the frontal bone with subperiosteal abscess, often with intracranial sequelae. Although complications of sinusitis increased after the pandemic, it is unclear whether rates of Pott's puffy tumor increased. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the rate of Pott's puffy tumor hospitalizations in US children and assess trends in clinical characteristics during 2017-2025. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional epidemiological study using Epic Cosmos. We included hospitalizations of pediatric patients (aged …

Clinical phenotype of frontotemporal dementia associated with the Pro392Leu SQSTM1 mutation.

Objective: To characterize the phenotypic spectrum of patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) carrying the P392L SQSTM1 mutation. Methods: We describe the clinical phenotype of three well-characterized probands carrying the P392L mutation, and review ten previously published FTD cases with the mutation. Results: All three cases were male with a presenile age of onset (52 or 64 years). Case 1 developed an amnestic-anomic syndrome followed by a behavioral variant of FTD (bvFTD). Case 2, with an autosomal dominant family history of dementia, developed a bvFTD associated with parkinsonism. Bot

Moving to 3D: Quantifying Virtual Surgical Planning Accuracy Using Geometric Morphometrics and Cephalometrics in Facial Feminization Surgery.

Facial feminization surgeries (FFS) aim to feminize facial features in transgender women and include frontal sinus setback, rhinoplasty, and genioplasty. FFS may be performed with virtual surgical planning (VSP) to help generate reproducible and predictable results. However, quantification of changes is challenging because these changes often occur in multiple axes and dimensions that are not easily reduced to a single error metric. The objective of this study was to apply cephalometrics and geometric morphometrics analyses to evaluate shape changes in FFS patients undergoing genioplasty and m

Comparative study on muscle-tendon stiffness and balance impairment in postmenopausal women: a focus on osteosarcopenia and osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study set out to examine the stiffness of the gastrocnemius medialis (GM) and Achilles tendon across postmenopausal women with osteosarcopenia (OS), osteoporosis (OP), and normal bone mineral density. Furthermore, we explored the relationship between muscle-tendon stiffness and postural sway during a curve-tracking task in both sagittal (AP) and frontal (ML) planes. METHODS: Seventy-three women volunteered to participate in this study. The participants were classified into OS (T-score ≤ - 2.5 and muscle mass below 5.5 kg/m2), OP (T-score ≤ - 2.5), and healthy (T-scor

Case report of CT-guided lung biopsy complicated by air embolism.

RATIONALE: Cerebral arterial air embolism is a rare but potentially fatal complication of computed tomography (CT) guided lung biopsy. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) is the first line of treatment for arterial gas embolism and needs to be administered immediately after the event. Early HBO2 can reduce the mortality rate of cerebrovascular air embolism. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 65-year-old woman was diagnosed with a pulmonary nodule with a diameter of approximately 0.8 cm in the right lower lung. The patient developed consciousness, convulsions, and arrhythmia after CT-guided lung biopsy. DIAGNOSIS: Cra

A hierarchical clustering approach for examining the relationship between pelvis-proximal femur geometry and bone stress injury in runners.

Bone stress injury (BSI) risk in runners is multifactorial and not well understood. Unsupervised machine learning approaches can potentially elucidate risk factors for BSI by identifying groups of similar runners within a population which differ in BSI incidence. Here, a hierarchical clustering approach is used to identify groups of collegiate cross country runners based on 2-dimensional frontal plane pelvis and proximal femur geometry, which was extracted from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans and dimensionally reduced by principal component analysis. Seven distinct groups were identifie

Morphometric analysis of dry atlas vertebrae in a northeastern Thai population and possible correlation with sex.

PURPOSE: The uppermost segment of the cervical vertebra or atlas (C1) is a critically important anatomical structure, housing the medulla oblongata and containing the grooves for the C1 spinal nerve and the vertebral vessels. Variations of the C1 vertebra can affect upper spine stability, and morphometric parameters have been reported to differ by population. However, there are few data regarding these parameters in Thais. The use of this bone to predict sex and age has never been reported. METHODS: This study aimed to examine C1 morphometry and determine its ability to predict sex. Twelve di

Swallow-related Brain Activity in Post-total Laryngectomy Patients: A Case Series Study.

BACKGROUND: Total laryngectomy is a surgical procedure to completely remove the hyoid bone, larynx, and associated muscles as a curative treatment for laryngeal cancer. This leads to insufficient swallowing function with compensative movements of the residual tongue to propel the food bolus to the pharynx and esophagus. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms of compensative swallowing after total laryngectomy remain unclear. Recently, swallowing-related cortical activation such as event-related desynchronization (ERD) during swallowing has been reported in healthy participants and neurolog

Gait and lower limb muscle strength in women after triple innominate osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: In adult patients with developmental hip dysplasia, a surgical procedure (triple innominate osteotomy) of the pelvic bone can be performed to rotate the acetabulum in the frontal plane, establishing better acetabular coverage. Although common clinical hip scores demonstrate significant improvements after surgery, they provide only overall information about function. The purpose of this study was to quantify the long-term outcome of triple innominate osteotomy in more detail using gait analyses and muscle strength measurements. METHODS: We performed gait analyses at self-selected w
