Trace elements in febrile seizure compared to febrile children admitted to an academic hospital in iran, 2011.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Pathogenesis of Febrile Convulsion (FC) is unknown but some elements and genetic predispositions have been considered in the top list. This case-control study was designed to compare some trace elements in paediatrics who were admitted with FC and those in febrile ones without seizure attacks at an academic hospital in northeast of Iran. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This case-control study was done from June 2010 to July 2011 on 160 paediatrics (6-months to 5-years old) who were diagnosed with FC and on 160 age-matched febrile children as control group. Data on the age, gender, p

Supplementation with fiber-rich multimixtures yields a higher dietary concentration and apparent absorption of minerals in rats.

Multimixtures (MMs) are dietary supplements prepared with low-cost ingredients and food by-products that are widely used in various countries to counteract malnutrition. Although MMs have a high content of minerals, they also contain high levels of dietary fiber and associated compounds, which might bind minerals and impair their absorption. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that the increased dietary fiber content of MMs would impair gastrointestinal mineral absorption due to the metal-binding capacity of dietary fiber. Thus, the objective of the present study was to feed growing

Thermal phase stability and catalytic properties of Nanostructured TiO2-MgO sol-gel mixed oxides.

Several compositions in the system TiO2-MgO were prepared via sol-gel method. The structural evolution of the samples was followed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal analysis (DTA/TG). In order to study the crystalline phase stability over time, the amorphous fresh gels were subjected to successive thermal treatments from 100 to 1100 degrees C, with a total annealing time of 442 h. Below 350 degrees C, magnesium acetates and oxalates phases were detected; at higher temperatures the binary compounds MgTi2O5, MgTiO3 and Mg2TiO4 appeared over a

Classification of high-throughput phenotyping data for differentiation among nutrient deficiency in common bean.

The development of automated, image-based, high-throughput plant phenotyping enabled the simultaneous measurement of many plant traits. Big and complex phenotypic datasets require advanced statistical methods which enable the extraction of the most valuable traits when combined with other measurements, interpretation, and understanding of their (eco)physiological background. Nutrient deficiency in plants causes specific symptoms that can be easily detected by multispectral imaging, 3D scanning, and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. Screening of numerous image-based phenotypic traits of co

Neuroclearance dysfunction in autism with sleep disorder: MRI evidence and mediation by systemic iron deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and exacerbate neurodevelopmental impairments. Yet, the mechanistic link between sleep disruption, brain fluid clearance, and systemic trace element status remains unclear. METHODS: We enrolled 230 children with ASD (114 with sleep disorder, ASD-SD; 116 without, ASD-nSD) and 110 typically developing controls. Neuroclearance function was quantified using diffusion kurtosis imaging along the perivascular space (DKI-ALPS), free water fraction (FW), and perivascular space volume fraction (PVSVF). S

Magnesium promotes tea plant growth via enhanced glutamine synthetase-mediated nitrogen assimilation.

Acidic tea (Camellia sinensis) plantation soil usually suffers from magnesium (Mg) deficiency, and as such, application of fertilizer containing Mg can substantially increase tea quality by enhancing the accumulation of nitrogen (N)-containing chemicals such as amino acids in young tea shoots. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the promoting effects of Mg on N assimilation in tea plants remain unclear. Here, both hydroponic and field experiments were conducted to analyze N, Mg, metabolite contents, and gene expression patterns in tea plants. We found that N and amino acids accumulate

The neutropenic diet: Are well-cooked vegetables still good sources of nutrients? A mini-narrative review.

A low immune response is fatal for humans because increased infection risk is related to both morbidity and mortality. The neutropenic diet is applied if a person's neutrophil count is <2000 cells/μL. When compared with standard nutrition treatment, the neutropenic diet is found to be related to deficiencies in dietary fiber, vitamins C, A, and D, magnesium, and calcium. This is also related to malnutrition in patients diagnosed with cancer. Although raw vegetables are good sources of these nutrients, they can also be sources of pathogen microorganisms. Thus, the consumption of well-cooked veg

Cardiovascular safety of calcium, magnesium and strontium: what does the evidence say?

Calcium, magnesium and strontium have all been implicated in both musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health and disease. However, despite these three elements being closely chemically related, there is marked heterogeneity of their characteristics in relation to cardiovascular outcomes. In this narrative review, we describe the relevant evidential landscape, focusing on clinical trials where possible and incorporating findings from observational and causal analyses, to discern the relative roles of these elements in musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health. We conclude that calcium supplement

Magnesium exerts both preventive and ameliorating effects in an in vitro rat Parkinson disease model involving 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+) toxicity in dopaminergic neurons.

A study was conducted to clarify the effects of magnesium (Mg) administration in a rat Parkinson disease (PD) model involving culture of ventral mesencephalic-striatal cells with 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+), based on recent evidence for significant loss of dopaminergic neurons exclusively in the substantia nigra of 1-year-old rats after exposure to low Mg intake over generations [Oyanagi, K., Kawakami, E., Kikuchi-Horie, K., Ohara, K., Ogata, K., Takahama, S., Wada, M., Kihira, T., Yasui, M., 2006. Dietary vitamin B12, sulfur amino acids, and odd-chain fatty acids affect the responses of rats to nickel deprivation.

An experiment was performed to ascertain whether changing the dietary intake of two substances, cystine and margaric acid (heptadecanoic acid), that affect the flux through pathways involving the two vitamin B12-dependent enzymes, methionine synthase and methylmalonyl-CoA mutase, would affect the interaction between nickel and vitamin B12. Rats were assigned to treatment groups of six in a fully crossed, four-factorial arrangement. The independent variables, or factors, were: per kg of fresh diet, nickel analyzed at 25 and 850 micrograms; vitamin B12 supplements of 0 and 50 micrograms; margari

Magnesium increases insulin-dependent glucose uptake in adipocytes.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is characterized by a decreased insulin sensitivity. Magnesium (Mg2+) deficiency is common in people with T2D. However, the molecular consequences of low Mg2+ levels on insulin sensitivity and glucose handling have not been determined in adipocytes. The aim of this study is to determine the role of Mg2+ in the insulin-dependent glucose uptake. METHODS: First, the association of low plasma Mg2+ with markers of insulin resistance was assessed in a cohort of 395 people with T2D. Secondly, the molecular role of Mg2+ in insulin-dependent glucose uptake was studied

Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis treated with living-donor kidney transplantation: case report.

Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis (FHHNC) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by renal magnesium wasting, hypercalciuria, and progressive renal function decline, often culminating in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This report presents the case of a successful living-donor kidney transplantation from a mother to her 22-year-old son, who was diagnosed with FHHNC. The patient initially exhibited hematuria at age two years, progressing to recurrent nephrolithiasis and hypercalciuria. Genetic analysis at age nine years confirmed FHHNC because of a CLDN-16 gene m

Intakes of magnesium, calcium and risk of fatty liver disease and prediabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity and insulin resistance play important roles in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Mg intake is linked to a reduced risk of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance; people with NAFLD or alcoholic liver disease are at high risk of Mg deficiency. The present study aimed to investigate whether Mg and Ca intakes were associated with risk of fatty liver disease and prediabetes by alcohol drinking status. DESIGN: We analysed the association between Ca or Mg intake and fatty liver disease, prediabetes or both prediabetes and fatty liver disease in cros

A de novo KCNA1 Mutation in a Patient with Tetany and Hypomagnesemia.

Mutations in the KCNA1 gene encoding the voltage-gated potassium (K+) channel Kv1.1 have been linked to rare neurological syndromes, episodic ataxia type 1 (EA1) and myokymia. In 2009, a KCNA1 mutation was identified in a large family with autosomal dominant hypomagnesemia. Despite efforts in establishing a genotype-phenotype correlation for the wide variety of symptoms in EA1, little is known on the serum magnesium (Mg2+) levels in these patients. In the present study, we describe a new de novo KCNA1 mutation in a Polish patient with tetany and hypomagnesemia. Electrophysiological and biochem

Hypomagnesaemia: a modifiable risk factor of diabetic nephropathy.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a heterogeneous disease characterised by an absolute or relative deficiency of insulin and insulin resistance. Diabetes is occurring at younger age in India. It is estimated that 20% of the type 2 DM patients reach end-stage renal disease (ESRD) during their lifetime. Recently, it has been proposed that hypomagnesaemia is a novel factor implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications. Considering this, a study was designed to estimate the prevalence and association of hypomagnesaemia with diabetic nephropathy in North Indian population. MATERIALS

Inherited and acquired disorders of magnesium homeostasis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Magnesium (Mg) imbalances are frequently overlooked. Hypermagnesemia usually occurs in preeclamptic women after Mg therapy or in end-stage renal disease patients, whereas hypomagnesemia is more common with a prevalence of up to 15% in the general population. Increasing evidence points toward a role for mild-to-moderate chronic hypomagnesemia in the pathogenesis of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome. RECENT FINDINGS: The kidneys are the major regulator of total body Mg homeostasis. Over the last decade, the identification of the responsible genes

Proton pump inhibitor associated hypomagnasaemia - a cause for concern?

AIMS: In recent years, there have been a number of case reports of severe hypomagnesaemia associated with proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use, such that both the FDA and MHRA have issued drug safety warnings. They have recommended periodic serum magnesium testing in patients prescribed PPIs but provide no guidance on timing of these measurements. METHODS: To our knowledge, we are the first to perform a prospective study to explore specifically proton pump inhibitor associated hypomagnesaemia (PPIAH). We followed 56 patients new to PPIs prospectively as well as a further 100 patients on long term

The association of proton pump inhibitors and hypomagnesemia in the community setting.

Evidence for the association between hypomagnesemia and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), highlighted by the 2011 FDA Drug Safety Communication, rests mainly on studies in hospitalized patients. Our objectives were to determine the prevalence of hypomagnesemia and its association with PPIs in the community setting. We performed a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of a large health maintenance organization administrative database, including ambulatory patients with ≥1 serum magnesium concentrations between 2008 and 2011, the lowest referred to as "index magnesium." In cases with any (index ma
