A novel theory of rapid eye movement sleep as an integral component of the seasonal timekeeping apparatus.

Although we have an increasingly sure grasp of much of its proximate circuitry, we continue to lack the ultimate physiological rationale of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. In this paper, we propose that REM sleep derives both its proximate mechanisms as well as its ultimate cause from photoperiodism. (This refers to the means whereby many organisms translate information about day length into appropriately timed physiological adjustments ensuring their survival through the most challenging season-usually winter). First, the REM sleep interval serves, we suggest, as a sampling device attuned to

Effects of Bipolar Disorder on the Verbal Fluency Skills of Native Speakers.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic psychiatric condition characterized by episodes of mania, hypomania, and depression. Due to the cognitive impairments associated with BD, patients frequently experience difficulties in attention, memory, and executive functions, which in turn adversely affect specific aspects of their language abilities, such as word retrieval, verbal fluency, and the organization of coherent speech. The present study aims to determine the extent to which the verbal fluency skills of native Turkish-speaking individuals with BD are impaired compared to h

Effect of EMDR for reduction of pain interference in children with sickle cell disease, the RELAX study: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) suffer from vaso-occlusive crises, extremely painful episodes that may require hospitalization. Traumatic experiences during hospitalization and frequent pain experiences may lead to psychological distress and the development of (subclinical) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Children with SCD also experience elevated pain interference (the negative impact of pain on daily life), which research suggests may be more strongly associated with psychological than biological factors. Due to the association between psychological distress and pai

Investigating the Effects of NMDAR and LGI1 Antibodies on Absence Seizures: Insights from Genetic Absence Epilepsy Rats and Acute Pharmacological Model of Absence Seizures.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood Absence Epilepsy, a subtype of genetic generealised epilepsy, is characterised by sudden and brief episodes of impaired consciousness. The Leucine-rich glioma-inactivated protein 1 (LGI1) and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) are key proteins involved in regulating neuronal excitability. In conditions like anti-LGI1 encephalitis and anti-NMDAR encephalitis, autoantibodies target and disrupt these proteins, causing memory deficits, behavioural changes, sleep disturbances, and epileptic seizures. However, the roles of LGI1 and NMDAR dysfunction in the pathophysiology

Cerebral glutamate levels over two years in initially antipsychotic-naïve first-episode patients with psychosis are related to clinical symptoms and cognition.

Although emerging evidence supports glutamatergic dysfunction in schizophrenia, clinical trials with glutamatergic compounds have overall been negative. This may be due to changes in glutamate levels during the course of illness. To address this, we measured glutamate levels in dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and left thalamus in 57 initially antipsychotic-naïve patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) aged 22.6 ± 5.0 years (58% females) and 55 healthy controls (HC) on a 3T MR scanner at baseline, after six weeks (48 FEP and 53 HC), six months (37 FEP and 49 HC), and two years (35 F

Factors associated with objective and subjective cognitive impairment in Chinese patients with acute major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients diagnosed withmajor depressive disorder (MDD) usually experience impaired cognitive functioning, which might negatively impact their clinical and functional outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the association of specific clinical factors with cognitive dysfunction in a group of MDD patients. METHODS: A total of 75 subjects diagnosed with recurrent MDD were evaluated during the acute stage. Their cognitive functions were assessed using the THINC-integrated tool (THINC-it) for attention/alertness, processing speed, executive function, and working memory. Clinical psyc

A systematic review: Virtual-reality-based techniques for human exercises and health improvement.

Virtual Reality (VR) has emerged as a new safe and efficient tool for the rehabilitation of many childhood and adulthood illnesses. VR-based therapies have the potential to improve both motor and functional skills in a wide range of age groups through cortical reorganization and the activation of various neuronal connections. Recently, the potential for using serious VR-based games that combine perceptual learning and dichoptic stimulation has been explored for the rehabilitation of ophthalmological and neurological disorders. In ophthalmology, several clinical studies have demonstrated the ab

Age-dependent nasal immune responses in non-hospitalized bronchiolitis children.

Bronchiolitis in children is associated with significant rates of morbidity and mortality. Many studies have been performed using samples from hospitalized bronchiolitis patients, but little is known about the immunological responses from infants suffering from mild/moderate bronchiolitis that do not require hospitalization. We have studied a collection of nasal lavage fluid (NLF) samples from outpatient bronchiolitis children as a novel strategy to unravel local humoral and cellular responses, which are not fully characterized. The children were age-stratified in three groups, two of them (GI

Role of the Nrdp1 in Brain Injury Induced by Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia in Rats via Regulating the Protein Levels of ErbB3.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is known as a repeated obstruction of the upper airway during sleep, leading to generalized hypoxia episodes and associated with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. We mainly explored the role of neuregulin receptor degradation protein-1 (Nrdp1, also known as FLRF) in brain injury induced by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) in rats. Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 12 per group), including the sham + adeno-associated virus-NC (AAV-NC) group, the sham + AAV-siNrdp1 group, the IH-4w (intermittent hypoxia for 4 weeks) + AAV-NC

A systematic review of the next-day effects of heavy alcohol consumption on cognitive performance.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies examining the next-day cognitive effects of heavy alcohol consumption have produced mixed findings, which may reflect inconsistencies in definitions of 'hangover'. Recent consensus has defined hangover as 'mental and physical symptoms, experienced the day after a single episode of heavy drinking, starting when blood alcohol concentration (BAC) approaches zero'. In light of this, we aimed to review the literature systematically to evaluate and estimate mean effect sizes of the next-day effects of heavy alcohol consumption on cognition. METHODS: Embase, PubMed and P

Luck, come here! Automatic approach tendencies toward gambling cues in moderate- to high-risk gamblers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Similar to substance addictions, reward-related cognitive motivational processes, such as selective attention and positive memory biases, have been found in disordered gambling. Despite findings that individuals with substance use problems are biased to approach substance-related cues automatically, no study has yet focused on automatic approach tendencies for motivationally salient gambling cues in problem gamblers. We tested if moderate- to high-risk gamblers show a gambling approach bias and whether this bias was related prospectively to gambling behaviour and problems.

Long-term impact of childhood malaria infection on school performance among school children in a malaria endemic area along the Thai-Myanmar border.

BACKGROUND: Children represent a high-risk group for malaria worldwide. Among people in Thailand who have malaria during childhood, some may have multiple malaria attacks during their lifetime. Malaria may affect neurological cognition in children, resulting in short-term impairment of memory and language functions. However, little is known regarding the long-term effects of malaria infection on cognitive function. This study examines the long-term impact of malaria infection on school performance among school children living in a malaria-endemic area along the Thai-Myanmar border. METHODS: A

The role of substance use and morality in violent crime - a qualitative study among imprisoned individuals in opioid maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) is regarded as a crime control measure. Yet, some individuals are charged with violent criminal offenses while enrolled in OMT. This article aims to generate nuanced knowledge about violent crime among a group of imprisoned, OMT-enrolled individuals by exploring their understandings of the role of substances in violent crime prior to and during OMT, moral values related to violent crime, and post-crime processing of their moral transgressions. METHODS: Twenty-eight semi-structured interviews were undertaken among 12 OMT-enrolled prisoners. The in

Acute and probable chronic Q fever during anti-TNFα and anti B-cell immunotherapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Q fever is caused by the intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii. Initial infection can present as acute Q fever, while a minority of infected individuals develops chronic Q fever endocarditis or vascular infection months to years after initial infection. Serology is an important diagnostic tool for both acute and chronic Q fever. However, since immunosuppressive drugs may hamper the humoral immune response, diagnosis of Q fever might be blurred when these drugs are used. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old Caucasian male was diagnosed with symptomatic acute Q fever (based on posit

Hippocampal temporal-parietal junction interaction in the production of psychotic symptoms: a framework for understanding the schizophrenic syndrome.

A framework is described for understanding the schizophrenic syndrome at the brain systems level. It is hypothesized that over-activation of dynamic gesture and social perceptual processes in the temporal-parietal occipital junction (TPJ), posterior superior temporal sulcus (PSTS) and surrounding regions produce the syndrome (including positive and negative symptoms, their prevalence, prodromal signs, and cognitive deficits). Hippocampal system hyper-activity and atrophy have been consistently found in schizophrenia. Hippocampal activity is highly correlated with activity in the TPJ and may be

Quality of life and pain in premenopausal women with major depressive disorder: the POWER Study.

BACKGROUND: Whereas it is established that organic pain may induce depression, it is unclear whether pain is more common in healthy subjects with depression. We assessed the prevalence of pain in premenopausal women with major depression (MDD). Subjects were 21- to 45-year-old premenopausal women with MDD (N = 70; age: 35.4 +/- 6.6; mean +/- SD) and healthy matched controls (N = 36; age 35.4 +/- 6.4) participating in a study of bone turnover, the P.O.W.E.R. Exploring transient global amnesia: a 14-year retrospective study of 142 cases.

BACKGROUND: Transient global amnesia (TGA) provides a unique perspective into the relationship between stress and memory formation. This study examines the clinical and diagnostic profiles of TGA and its mimics and reviews the current evidence to enhance understanding of its elusive pathophysiology. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 142 consecutive acute amnesia cases (January 2011 to July 2024) at a tertiary centre in Sydney. Cases were identified via diagnostic codes and confirmed through manual review. Patients were classified as either TGA or non-TGA according to established criteria.

Confusional States During Electroconvulsive Therapy for Late-Life Depression: A Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive side effects, such as memory loss, associated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) have been extensively studied. However, knowledge about (sub)acute confusional states during ECT is limited, particularly in older adults with depression. Their incidence, recurrence, and co-occurrence remain unclear. This study aimed to describe the incidence, recurrence, co-occurrence, and clinical course of various subtypes of confusional states during ECT. METHODS: Data were derived from the 'Rivastigmine for ECT-induced Cognitive Adverse effects in Late-Life depression' (RECALL) pro

Assessing the Trajectory of Schizophrenia Effectively in Order to Treat Effectively.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder characterized by heterogeneous symptom trajectories that significantly impact patient outcomes. We believe that the study of the trajectories of Schizophrenia is useful in assessing treatment options and outcomes. While the Positive and Negative Syndrome scale is usually used on one occasion to measure symptoms at a single time, if measured repeatedly , the PANSS is also useful in measuring trajectories. In order to illustrate and promote this serial use, we have reviewed papers which describe the delineation of Trajectories of Symp
