INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aimed to verify, via computed volumetric tomography, a correlation between the morphology of the mandibular symphysis and the various facial types.
METHODS: From a sample of 148 digital volumetric tomographs, the subjects were classified as either short face (25 subjects), normal face (27 subjects), or long face (28 subjects) according to the average values of their Frankfort-mandibular plane angle. The 80 healthy subjects were between 12 and 40 years of age. Tomography was carried out using NewTom 3G volume scanner (QRsr1, Verona, Italy). The following paramet

INTRODUCTION: In this cephalometric investigation, we analyzed the treatment effects of bone-anchored maxillary protraction (BAMP) with miniplates in the maxilla and mandible connected by Class III elastics in patients with Class III malocclusion.
METHODS: The treated sample consisted of 21 Class III patients consecutively treated with the BAMP protocol before the pubertal growth spurt (mean age, 11.10 ± 1.8 years) and reevaluated after BAMP therapy, about 1 year later. The treated group was compared with a matched control group of 18 untreated Class III subjects. Significant differences betw

INTRODUCTION: To increase stability and mandibular setback movement, surgical maxillary impaction is normally performed with mandibular setback surgery in treating adult skeletal Class III patients. This article demonstrates the use of microimplants for anchorage to intrude molars and the resultant rotation of the maxillary occlusal plane clockwise to increase the surgical mandibular setback and reduce the posterior vertical dimension instead of maxillary surgical impaction.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 21-year-old man with mandibular prognathism was treated with mandibular setback surgery that inc

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to compare Delaire and Grummons protraction facemasks with a new articulator system (Amtech MG1, American Technologies, Brazil) that can record condylar positions.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients treated with protraction facemask therapy were divided into 2 groups; 18 were treated with the Delaire facemask (DFM) and 16 with the Grummons facemask (GFM). The observation periods were 8.5 months for the DFM group and 10 months for the GFM group. Mandibular position indicator (MPI) recordings were taken with the new articulator system and evaluated before and

This case report describes the treatment of a 37-year-old woman with multiple restored and missing teeth, a Class III subdivision malocclusion, and complete dental crossbite. Treatment options included orthognathic surgery and an orthodontic-prosthetic approach. The patient opted for nonsurgical treatment with space opening for prosthetic replacement of the first maxillary molars.

INTRODUCTION: Repair of root resorption cavities has been studied under light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The aim of this investigation was to demonstrate the use of microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to assist in the identification of the region of interest for light microscopy preparation. This study also qualitatively illustrated the root resorption craters with 4 or 8 weeks of retention after 4 weeks of continuous light or heavy orthodontic force application.
METHODS: Four patients who required bilateral extractions of maxillary first p

INTRODUCTION: Rapid palatal expansion (RPE) is routinely used to correct transverse deficiencies in the maxilla, but its effects on the dentoalveolus are uncertain. The purpose of this study was to compare measurements made on cone-beam computerized tomography scans between patients with RPE treatment and controls to determine transverse dimension increases and the amounts of alveolar and dental tipping.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with posterior crossbite who required RPE treatment and 25 sex- and age-matched controls (no crossbite) were orthodontically treated and received cone-beam compu

Because of their multifactorial etiologies, dental and skeletal open bites are among the most difficult malocclusions to treat to a successful and stable result. Etiologic factors include vertical maxillary excess, skeletal pattern, abnormalities in dental eruption, and tongue-thrust problems. The purpose of this article was to report the treatment of an adult patient with a lateral open bite and a unilateral posterior crossbite. The treatment involved nonextraction therapy, including intermaxillary elastics, to obtain dentoalveolar extrusion in the region of the lateral open bite. The treatme

INTRODUCTION: Mice with brachymorphism (bm) have defective chondrogenesis, including abnormal growth of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis. Malocclusion (anterior transverse crossbite) sometimes spontaneously occurs in inbred BALB/c-bm/bm mice, before the mandibular incisors erupt and make contact with the maxillary incisors. The aim of this study was to determine whether functional lateral loads to incisors promote anterior transverse crossbites in BALB/c-bm/bm mice.
METHODS: BALB/c-bm/bm mice with normal occlusion (normal group), BALB/c-bm/bm mice with malocclusion in which the incisors wer

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic space opening during adolescence is a common treatment for congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors. Because of continued facial growth and compensatory tooth eruption, several years can elapse between completion of orthodontic treatment for a teenage patient and implant placement. There are reports that, after successful orthodontic opening of the implant space, the central incisor and canine roots reapproximate during retention and prevent implant placement.
METHODS: To study this phenomenon, the records of 94 patients with missing maxillary lateral incisors

This article describes a patient whose permanent canines and premolars had not erupted at age 14 years, although their root formation was complete, with closed apices. Surgical and orthodontic treatment was planned to correct the multiple impactions. The orthodontic traction used 5 strategic teeth and allowed for the eruption of all 12 impacted teeth. The surgical-orthodontic treatment of many impacted teeth yielded good esthetic and periodontal results, as shown by the patient's satisfaction and the periodontal probing 2 years after the treatment. Multiple impacted teeth are a rare eruption d

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the reasons for failure of orthodontic treatment for impacted maxillary canines and to recommend measures to overcome them.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients (ages, 17.4 +/- 4.3 years) with 37 maxillary impacted canines were referred after a failed attempt to resolve the impaction. Reasons for failure were analyzed, and corrective measures undertaken. The success rate of the revised treatments and the durations of both treatments were recorded.
RESULTS: The mean duration of the failed treatments was 26.2 +/- 17.2 months. The failed treatments we

This case report describes the orthodontic treatment of a patient with a deep-overbite Angle Class I malocclusion, agenesis of a mandibular central incisor, and 2 supernumerary teeth, which caused impaction of the mandibular first premolars. The 15-year-old patient also had a convex profile, maxillary dentoalveolar protrusion, and deficiency of space for the correct alignment of teeth. Therefore, treatment consisted of fixed appliance therapy, cervical headgear, extraction of the supernumeraries and the mandibular and maxillary first premolars, and mesiodistal reduction of the maxillary inciso

INTRODUCTION: Pain is a major concern of patients before orthodontic treatment. Currently, the most frequently recommended treatments for pain after archwire placement or appliance adjustment are over-the-counter (OTC) analgesics. Although the overuse of OTC medications and their potential side effects are concerns, particularly for children, no study to date has investigated a nonpharmacologic option for pain management as an alternative for these analgesics.
METHODS: A parallel 2-group stratified block randomized clinical trial was designed to assess the pain response of adolescents during

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this controlled study was to analyze the degree and localization of 3-dimensional (3D) facial asymmetry in adult patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) compared with a control group and its impact on the visual perception of faces.
METHODS: The degree of 3D asymmetry was analyzed with a novel method without landmarks in 18 adults with complete unilateral CLP and 18 adults without congenital anomalies. Furthermore, the CLP and control faces were rated for appearance, symmetry, and facial expression by 30 participants.
RESULTS: The results showed that adults with CLP
