A validated computational framework to evaluate the stiffness of 3D printed ankle foot orthoses.

The purpose of this study was to create and validate a standardized framework for the evaluation of the ankle stiffness of two designs of 3D printed ankle foot orthoses (AFOs). The creation of four finite element (FE) models allowed patient-specific quantification of the stiffness and stress distribution over their specific range of motion during the second rocker of the gait. Validation was performed by comparing the model outputs with the results obtained from a dedicated experimental setup, which showed an overall good agreement with a maximum relative error of 10.38% in plantarflexion and

Regeneration of diaphragm with bio-3D cellular patch.

Neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia often require surgical defect closure with a patch. Alternatives to native diaphragmatic tissue are critically needed for this paediatric surgery. The clinical efficacy of mesh patches is limited by complications associated with residual foreign material and by hernia recurrence. In this study, we used a novel bio-3D printer method to generate large scaffold-free tissue patches composed of human cells. The resulting large tissue constructs had high elasticity and strength. Cellular patches were transplanted into rats with surgically created diaphra

Custom fabrication of biomass containment devices using 3-D printing enables bacterial growth analyses with complex insoluble substrates.

Physiological studies of recalcitrant polysaccharide degradation are challenging for several reasons, one of which is the difficulty in obtaining a reproducibly accurate real-time measurement of bacterial growth using insoluble substrates. Current methods suffer from several problems including (i) high background noise due to the insoluble material interspersed with cells, (ii) high consumable and reagent cost and (iii) significant time delay between sampling and data acquisition. A customizable substrate and cell separation device would provide an option to study bacterial growth using optica

Postinfarct VSD management using 3D computer printing assisted percutaneous closure.

Postinfarct VSD (PIVSD) carries a grim prognosis. The mainstay of management has been surgical repair. The advent of septal occluder devices has offered an attractive alternative to surgical repair. Most PIVSD have serpiginous tracts with necrotic tissue, which makes assessing the defect challenging. 3D computer printing has become useful in preprocedure planning of complex surgical procedures in multiple subspecialties.

A three-dimensional mediastinal model created with rapid prototyping in a patient with ectopic thymoma.

Preoperative three-dimensional (3D) imaging of a mediastinal tumor using two-dimensional (2D) axial computed tomography is sometimes difficult, and an unexpected appearance of the tumor may be encountered during surgery. In order to evaluate the preoperative feasibility of a 3D mediastinal model that used the rapid prototyping technique, we created a model and report its results. The 2D image showed some of the relationship between the tumor and the pericardium, but the 3D mediastinal model that was created using the rapid prototyping technique showed the 3D lesion in the outer side of the ext

Customizing Three-Dimensional Elastic Barium Titanate Sponge for Intelligent Piezoelectric Sensing.

Piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEHs) with porous structures, such as piezoelectric elastic sponges, exhibit high force-to-electricity conversion efficiencies owing to their excellent compression recovery properties. However, conventional preparation methods are limited to producing bulk-form sponge-like PEHs and fail to create more elaborate three-dimensional (3D) structures that could enhance conversion efficiency. Herein, we invent a composite ink consisting of waterborne polyurethane (WPU), barium titanate (BTO), and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) that is suitable for direct ink writing (DIW

Development and Validation of a 3-Dimensionally Printed Craniotomy Simulation Model for Under-resourced Healthcare Systems: A Technical Note.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cadaver-based simulations are limited by financial and legal constraints, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Three-dimensional (3D) printing-based alternatives are often limited in scope and prohibitively expensive. This report describes a 3D-printed model that addresses these concerns by simulating a variety of craniotomy approaches in a cost-effective manner. METHODS: A craniotomy model was developed using medical imaging, 3D printing, and foam molding. Detailed manufacturing information for the model is provided. The model was assessed by 4

Exposure to chemical substances and particles emitted during additive manufacturing.

Additive manufacturing is an innovative technology that allows the production of three-dimensional objects replicating digital models. The aim of this study was to identify whether the use of this technology in a room without mechanical ventilation system may pose a health risk to its users due to the emission of chemical compounds and fine particles. Measurements were conducted in a furnished space with natural ventilation only, during additive manufacturing on a fused deposition modeling printer with 9 different filaments. Both chemicals and particles were sampled. Volatile organic compounds

Osteogenic differentiation of 3D-printed porous tantalum with nano-topographic modification for repairing craniofacial bone defects.

Introduction: Congenital or acquired bone defects in the oral and cranio-maxillofacial (OCMF) regions can seriously affect the normal function and facial appearance of patients, and cause great harm to their physical and mental health. To achieve good bone defect repair results, the prosthesis requires good osteogenic ability, appropriate porosity, and precise three-dimensional shape. Tantalum (Ta) has better mechanical properties, osteogenic ability, and microstructure compared to Ti6Al4V, and has become a potential alternative material for bone repair. The bones in the OCMF region have uniqu

Utilization of a Simple Surgical Guide for Multidirectional Cranial Distraction Osteogenesis in Craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: Multidirectional cranial distraction osteogenesis (MCDO) can achieve a desired shape for deformities of the cranium. In the past, visual estimation was used to reflect on the actual skull, but it was time-consuming and inaccurate. Here we demonstrate an effective osteotomy navigation method using surgical guides made from a dental impression silicone. METHODS: Seven patients who underwent MCDO between August 2013 and September 2016 were included in the study. Five cases involved utilization of the surgical guide for osteotomy. Three-dimensional (3D) printed cranium models were mad

Bystander effects of a photoactivated ruthenium-based complex in 2D and 3D cell culture models.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) using ruthenium-based photosensitizers (PSs) has attracted increasing interest due to their favorable photophysical properties and their ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon irradiation. Although PDT is generally considered a localized treatment, indirect effects on neighboring non-irradiated cells, known as bystander effects, may occur. In this study, we investigated, for the first time, bystander responses induced by the photoactivatable ruthenium nitrosyl complex {TPyP[Ru(NO₂)(bpy)₂]₄}(PF₆)₄ (RuNO₂TPyP) using two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimens

BACKGROUND: Extensive comminuted mandible (ECM) fractures with dentition defects pose challenges for occlusal restoration. In selected severe cases with extensive comminution and compromised dentition, conventional MMF may be difficult to apply effectively. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability and outcomes of using three-dimensional (3D) printed occlusal splints for occlusal restoration in ECM fractures. METHODS: This retrospective, non-randomized cohort study with a small sample size was conducted involving 22 patients with ECM fractures. Twelve patients were treated with 3D-printe

Design and measurement of 3D-printed variable-morphology and variable-density breast phantoms for mammography and breast CT dose assessment.

Accurate dose quantification across radiation-based breast imaging techniques is important for patient safety, but currently available phantoms do not easily allow the assessment of the impact of breast size and density across modalities. Here we design, produce, and validate three dimensional (3D)-printed, variable-morphology, fillable phantoms for the purpose of radiation dose measurements and comparison studies. Three representative breast shapes (small, medium, large) were exported from real Breast Computed Tomography (BCT) data. Corresponding compressed shapes were generated following the

Improving accuracy of opening-wedge osteotomies of distal radius using a patient-specific ramp-guide technique.

BACKGROUND: Opening-wedge osteotomies of the distal radius, performed with three-dimensional printed patient-specific instruments, are a promising technique for accurate correction of malunions. Nevertheless, reports of residual malalignments and discrepancies in the plate and screw position from the planned fixation exist. Consequently, we developed a patient-specific ramp-guide technique, combining navigation of plate positioning, osteotomy cutting, and reduction. The aim of this study is to compare the accuracy of navigation of three-dimensional planned opening-wedge osteotomies, using a ra
