Developmental outcomes of extremely preterm infants born to adolescent mothers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Extremely preterm infants and infants born to adolescent mothers are at risk for adverse developmental. The objectives were to evaluate development and behavior outcomes of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants born to adolescent mothers <20 compared with adult mothers ≥20 years and to identify socioeconomic risk factors that affect outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective cohort analysis of 211 infants >27 weeks of adolescent mothers and 1723 infants of adult mothers at Neonatal Research Network centers from 2008 to 2011. Groups were compared and regression models were

Profile of Treatment-Seeking Gaming Disorder Patients: A Network Perspective.

The increasing presence of gaming disorder in recent years has led to major efforts to identify the specific predictors that have a high impact on the profile of people seeking treatment for this mental condition. The purpose of this study was to explore the network structure of the correlates of gaming disorder considering sociodemographic features and other clinical symptoms. Network analysis was applied to a sample of patients who met clinical criteria for gaming disorder (n = 117, of ages ranging from 15 to 70 yrs-old). Variables considered in the network included sex, age, socioeconomic p

Adverse childhood experiences among youth reported to child welfare: Results from the national survey of child & adolescent wellbeing.

The negative influence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on social, emotional, and behavioral (SEB) outcomes are well documented. However, no research to date has examined the effect of ACEs on SEB outcomes in youth who received mental health services after reporting to the child welfare system. This study's analyses of data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being II revealed that the most prevalent ACEs included hospitalization for a medical condition, neglect, and exposures to domestic and community violence. Logistic regression of this data showed that the odds of

The Role of Repetitive Negative Thoughts in the Vulnerability for Emotional Problems in Non-Clinical Children.

The current study examined the role of repetitive negative thoughts in the vulnerability for emotional problems in non-clinical children aged 8-13 years (N = 158). Children completed self-report questionnaires for assessing (1) neuroticism and behavioral inhibition as indicators of general vulnerability (2) worry and rumination which are two important manifestations of repetitive negative thoughts, and (3) emotional problems (i.e., anxiety, depression, and sleep difficulties). Results demonstrated that there were positive correlations between measures of general vulnerability, repetitive negat

Distinguishing two types of adolescent sex offenders.

OBJECTIVE: To distinguish between adolescent sex offenders according to nonsexual offense history. METHOD: Thirty-two sex offenders, 48 criminally versatile offenders, and 34 nonaggressive offenders referred by youth courts for mental health assessments in Toronto, Canada between 1994 and 1997 were compared on measures of childhood conduct problems, current behavioral adjustment, antisocial attitudes and beliefs, and risk for future delinquency. Sex offenders were further divided into those without (sex-only) and those with (sex-plus) nonsexual offenses in their criminal histories. RESULTS:

An international perspective on Tourette syndrome: selected findings from 3,500 individuals in 22 countries.

We have established a multisite, international database of 3,500 individuals diagnosed with Tourette syndrome (TS). The male:female ratio is 4.3:1 for the total sample, with wide variation among sites; the male excess occurs at every site. Anger control problems, sleep difficulties, coprolalia, and self-injurious behavior only reach impressive levels in individuals with comorbidity. Anger control problems are strongly correlated with comorbidity, regardless of site, region, or whether assessed by neurologists or psychiatrists. The mean age at onset of tics is 6.4 years. At all ages, about 12%

UNLABELLED: Social problems in primary care Objectives: Social problems appear in clinical work as well as in expert opinions for courts and insurances as a major factor in frequently chronic psychosomatic diseases, both in the professional and private environment. On the assumption that unemployed individuals show a higher risk for the development of mental and psychosomatic diseases, we investigated our hypothesis that mostly social issues lie at the center of patients' motivation for consultations. METHODS: Our questionnaire was dispatched by the Medical Association of Mecklenburg-Vorpomme

Factors in the neighborhood as risks of suicide in rural China: a multilevel analysis.

To estimate the effect of social factors in the neighborhood environment on suicide risks, we studied 392 suicides and 416 controls, all aged 15-34 years, consecutively and randomly selected from 16 rural counties in three provinces of China. The social factors in the village neighborhood were measured by the WHO scale of Community Stress and Problems. The individual scores as well as the sum scores of the Community Stress Problems were compared between the suicides and the controls, and multilevel logit regressions were performed for the social structural stresses and community behavioral pro

Sleep-disordered breathing in children.

Pediatric Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) is often associated with behavioral problems, poor school performance, decreased quality of life and increased healthcare utilization. Adenotonsillectomy (T&A) leads to resolution of SDB in over 80% of children and results in behavioral improvement and better quality of life. Obese children, as well as those afflicted with craniofacial, genetic or neuromuscular disorders, are at greater risk for SDB than healthy children. This report highlights the need to recognize and treat SDB in children.

An experimental analysis of treatment effects on consonant clusters and ambisyllabic consonants in two adults with developmental phonological problems.

The effect of treatment on errors in consonant clusters and in ambisyllabic consonants were investigated in two adults with histories of developmental phonological problems. Using a multiple baseline across behaviors, ambisyllabic consonant errors were treated in bisyllabic words and consonant cluster errors were treated in two different cluster classes. Results indicated that treatment, consisting of a sound-referenced rebus approach, affected change in production of trained words as well as generalization to untrained words for targeted behaviors.

An interdisciplinary approach to the dental care of the mentally disabled.

In institutions for mentally disabled persons, dental care of the patient is often difficult because of uncooperative behavior. Premedication is sometimes necessary. The mentally disabled patient frequently receives other medication for behavioral control, cerebral palsy, seizures, or the like, that may interact with the dental premedication. Because of the problems that may develop, a program between an institution's dental department and a university's clinical pharmacy department was developed that provided an approach to the selection of premedication for the dental patient who is mentally

Comparing problem gamblers with moderate-risk gamblers in a sample of university students.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In an effort to provide further empirical evidence of meaningful differences, this study explores, in a student population, the distinctions in gambling behavioral patterns and specific associated problems of two levels of gambling severity by comparing problem gamblers (PG) and moderate-risk gamblers (MR) as defined by the score on the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI; MR: 3-7; PG: 8 and more). METHODS: The study sample included 2,139 undergraduate students (male = 800, mean age = 22.6) who completed the PGSI and questionnaires on associated problems. RESULTS: Resu

Preschool developmental pathways to preadolescent internalizing and externalizing problems.

The present study investigated longitudinal pathways from specific early preschool behavioral problems (ages 2-3 years) to internalizing and externalizing problems in preadolescence (ages 10-11 years), and the role of social problems at school entry (ages 4-5 years) in such pathways. Path analyses were performed using both parent and teacher reports in a sample of 251 to 346 children from the general population, depending on the availability of parent and teacher data at each time of assessment. Structural equation modeling revealed homotypic internalizing and externalizing pathways, predictio

Expressed Emotion and Attributions in Relatives of Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Panic Disorder.

Relatives' criticism of, hostility toward, and emotional overinvolvement (EOI) with patients are predictive of treatment response and relapse. Although these constructs have been linked to relatives' attributions for patient problems, little research has yet evaluated attributions for specific types of problems. This study examined event-specific attributions (i.e., attributions specifically for either disorder-related [DR] or non-DR problems) in relatives of patients with anxiety disorders. Relatives made more illness attributions (attributing problems to a patient's disorder) than controllab

Gambling and other risk behaviors on university campuses.

To examine the prevalence of problem gambling and its relationship to other risk-taking behaviors, the authors surveyed 1,350 undergraduates at the 4 campuses of Connecticut State University (CSU) during fall 2000. On the basis of a modified version of the South Oaks Gambling Screen, a widely used screening instrument, they found that 18% of the men and 4% of the women reported that gambling had led to at least 3 negative life consequences (eg, felt guilty, gambled more than intended), commonly defined as problem gambling. Students identified as problem gamblers, compared with other students,

Uncertainty quantification of the effect of cardiac position variability in the inverse problem of electrocardiographic imaging.

Objective.Electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) is a functional imaging modality that consists of two related problems, the forward problem of reconstructing body surface electrical signals given cardiac bioelectric activity, and the inverse problem of reconstructing cardiac bioelectric activity given measured body surface signals. ECGI relies on a model for how the heart generates bioelectric signals which is subject to variability in inputs. The study of how uncertainty in model inputs affects the model output is known as uncertainty quantification (UQ). This study establishes develops, and ch

[Burnout in students of health-care professions. Risk and protection factors].

BACKGROUND: The burnout syndrome affects more than half of students and professionals involved in healthcare worldwide and is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and a low perception of self-efficacy. Several studies indicate that when students are burnt-out, clinical work, professionalism and ethical behavior, as well as empathy, are negatively affected, while the risk of academic attrition, depression and suicidal ideation tend to increase. At a national level, recent information shows that one out of every two medical students suffer burnout at the beginning of the clin

Estimating the total mortality among problem drug users.

This paper's objective is to develop a method to estimate the total mortality among problem drug users. The total mortality is given by a base rate of mortality not related to drugs and the deaths that are directly and indirectly related to drugs. A fatal poisoning by drugs (overdose) is directly related to drugs, whereas a casualty due to a drug-related disease or a drug-related accident is indirectly related to drugs. As an example of a method to estimate the total mortality, the results from a cohort study among methadone patients in Amsterdam were projected on the whole population of probl

A Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Framework to Address Cognitive and Neurobehavioral Impairments After Strokes to the Anterior Communicating Artery.

Patients with strokes to the Anterior Communicating Artery (ACoA) pose an important challenge to rehabilitation teams due to a particular mix of cognitive and behavioral impairments (anosognosia, anterograde amnesia, prospective memory problems, and executive dysfunction). These deficits often compromise engagement with rehabilitation, learning and generalization. The goal of this article is to describe the long-term presentation of a patient with an ACoA stroke (Mrs. B, a 60-year-old electric engineer) as well as her rehabilitation needs and the many challenges experienced by the rehabilitati
