BACKGROUND: Individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have an increased risk of progression to active tuberculosis following Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. The objective of the study was to determine IFN-γ responses for the detection of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) with QuantiFERON-TB GOLD In Tube (QFT-G-IT) and T-SPOT.TB in HIV patients, and evaluate the influence of CD4 cell count on tests performance.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) to diagnose Tuberculous (TB) lymphadenitis with compare to excision biopsy and to correlate TB lymphadenitis with clinical, cytological, radiological and mantoux test features.
METHODS: This was a prospective correlational study. FNAC was done by a pediatrician for 135 children with persisting lymphadenitis after two weeks of antibiotic therapy in the period of January 2005 to June 2006 and compared with excision biopsy in a tertiary care hospital.

A 12-year-old girl with latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and currently receiving prophylaxis with isoniazid presented with nausea, vomiting and increasing frontal headache. Toxicity to the anti-tuberculosis drug was suspected, but her symptoms persisted after isoniazid withdrawal. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a brain mass to be present.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Identifying and treating persons with latent tuberculosis (TB) infection (LTBI) at high risk for developing TB is part of the current TB elimination strategy. There are no specific criteria, other than medical risks, to designate groups as high risk for developing TB. An outbreak of isoniazid resistant tuberculosis occurred in a large second level school. A total of 1,160 teenage pupils were at risk. Nineteen cases of tuberculosis were diagnosed, 15 were students, 9 of whom were among 251 non-vaccinated students and 6 among 909 vaccinated students. Tuberculosis-related examination of 123 children during hospital treatment in 2 pneumologic departments has revealed 9.8% of tuberculosis patients. Among the children with destructive lung processes one-third had tuberculosis in a destructive phase. Timely diagnosis of childhood tuberculosis in children's somatic hospitals, especially in those of a pneumologic type, requires the obligatory Mantoux test with 2 TU PPD-L and in children with destructive lung processes bacteriologic sputum examination for Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

The paper deals with the data of follow-up of adolescents with disseminated pulmonary processes of different etiology. Among the patients who were treated in the department during the last 10 years disseminated processes amounted to 3.3%, with disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis being recorded in 1.3% and dissemination of the nontuberculous etiology in 2% of the patients. Mucoviscidosis, metastasis, of the thyroid cancer, histiocytosis X, toxoplasmosis and echinococcosis were among the disseminations of the nontuberculous etiology. Basic diagnostic criteria have been determined.
