Osteoporosis--comparative study between quantitative ultrasound of calcaneus and DXA.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is bone disease characterized by reduced bone mass and reduction of bone tissue. Main complications of osteoporosis and major cause of morbidity and mortality in elderly population are fractures. Early diagnosis and detection of osteoporosis can prevent complications of osteoporosis in terms of fractures. OBJECTIVES: Diagnostic assessment of osteoporosis is mostly being done threw two commonly used methods: ultrasound of calcaneus and osteodensitometry (DXA). The results were compared through a prospective study involving two groups of patients with osteoporosis. P

New or worsening lumbar spine vertebral fractures increase lumbar spine bone mineral density and falsely suggest improved skeletal status.

Changes in lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) are determined by follow-up dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) assessments. Inclusion of new or worsening vertebral fractures in follow-up measurements may increase BMD. To test this hypothesis, we examined pooled data from the placebo groups of two clinical trials that involved postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. DXA measurements of lumbar spine BMD, bone mineral content (BMC), and area were obtained at baseline and at two years in the Multiple Outcomes of Raloxifene Evaluation (MORE) Trial and at baseline and study endpoint in the Fr

Is stone radiodensity a useful parameter for predicting outcome of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy for stones < or = 2 cm?

PURPOSE: Several factors determine the success of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) for kidney stones: stone size, stone location within the collecting system, stone type, and the SWL machine used. It has been suggested that stone radiodensity, as determined either by plain radiography or computed tomography attenuation values, may be an independent predictor of SWL success. We examined the outcome of SWL for solitary stones less than or equal to 2 cm located within the renal pelvis, based on their radiodensity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 211 patients with solitary renal pelvic stones mea

An imaging study of body composition including lipodeposition pattern in a patient of familial partial lipodystrophy (Dunnigan type).

Familial Partial Lipodystrophy, Dunnigan type (FPLD), is characterised by loss of subcutaneous fat from the limbs and an excessive accumulation of fat on the neck, shoulder girdle and face. Affected individuals have insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia and early cardiovascular events. Body composition (BC) with details of adipose tissue distribution were studied by Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) ina heterozygote for the FPLD mutation LMNA R482W, and in an age, sex and body mass index (BMI) matched normal control. DEXA revealed a marked decrease in tot

Alendronate increases bone density in chronic spinal cord injury: a case report.

Over the first 6 to 16 months after spinal cord injury (SCI), up to a third of bone mass may be lost because of demineralization, resulting in an increased risk for fractures. Studies in postmenopausal women have shown the efficacy of oral alendronate, an aminobisphosphonate, in increasing bone mass. However, the efficacy of alendronate in reversing bone density loss has not been shown in patients with chronic SCI. This article reports on the efficacy of alendronate in increasing bone mass in a patient with neurologically incomplete American Spinal Injury Association class D SCI and Brown-Séqu

Nanoparticles in plant extracts--factors which influence the formation of nanoparticles in black tea infusions.

The influence of different factors on the formation of nanoparticles in freshly brewed tea extracts was investigated. A black tea infusion was observed during cooling using photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). The mean particle size and the number of the nanoparticles increase with decreasing temperature. In the presence of caffeine more particles are formed within the infusion. To study the influence of slight structural differences between methylxanthines, the effect of the addition of caffeine to solutions of freshly prepared decaffeinated tea was compared to that of theophylline and theo

Increased hip bone mineral density in a woman with gluteal silicon implant.

Conditions and artifacts such as aortic calcification, osteophytes, hip prostheses, and metallic objects can mislead the results of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning of the spine and hip. Gluteal silicon implants increasingly are being used for aesthetic purposes by women in Brazil, some of whom are at an age of high risk for the development of postmenopausal osteoporosis. We herein report a case of a woman whose hip bone mineral density by DXA clearly increased after the placement of bilateral gluteal implants of silicon. This case demonstrates the importance of inquiring about

Quantitative bone mineral assessment at the forearm: a review.

Bone mineral density and geometric properties of the human forearm can be measured to determine the amount of bone or bone loss at the scanning site and to predict the risk of forearm fractures. These forearm measurements are also used to estimate bone mass at remote anatomical locations and thereby estimate the risk for spine, hip and other fractures. The peripheral location of the human forearm, with its relatively small amount of surrounding soft tissue, improves the accuracy and the precision of bone mass measurement and has made this site an early choice for the assessment of a subject's

[In vitro study with techniques of imaging of the composition of urinary calculi].

Pre-treatment knowledge of the lithiasic composition can be useful to design the most appropriate therapeutic scheme for each kind of stone. The relationship between the stone's densitometry information provided by the different imaging techniques, conventional radiology (RX), computerized axial tomography (CAT) and dual energy radiographic densitometry (DO) is analyzed, as well as the elemental composition determined by the microanalysis of fragments obtained post-lithotrity using a scanning electronic microscope (SEM) associated to X-ray dispersion energy (XDE). 60 stones, 12 for each pure c

Distal metacarpal bone mineral density by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan. Methodological investigation and application in rheumatoid arthritis.

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scanning was performed along the axis of the third metacarpal bone of the non-dominant hand and including metacarpal bones 2, 3, 4 and 5. The Bone Mineral Density (BMD) was calculated for the distal 1/4 of each metacarpal bone. Ten patients with seropositive, erosive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and 10 healthy, sex- and age-matched persons were investigated twice. The average BMD in RA patients was 73.6% of the value found in normals. The coefficient of variation on double determinations (in patients and controls) was 0.9-3.0%. We suggest that dual energy X-ray ab

Bone mineral density in the proximal femur and hip fracture type in the elderly.

Bone mineral density (BMD) in the contralateral proximal femur in 100 female elderly patients with hip fracture and the 35 controls without hip fracture were investigated using dual-photon absorptiometry. The hip fracture patients were divided into intracapsular fracture (n = 53) and extracapsular fracture (n = 47) groups, and these two groups were further divided into five subgroups according to fracture site: intracapsular fracture type 1 (transcervical fracture, n = 29) and type 2 (subcapital fracture, n = 24); extracapsular fracture type 1 (intertrochanteric line fracture, n = 13), type 2

Non-invasive methods for quantitating bone loss of aging.

The clinical utility of bone mass measurements has been the subject of considerable debate. The determination of whether a measurement has utility in clinical practice is difficult, but several elements must be present. First, the measurement must be predictive of clinical outcomes. Two recent studies have shown that bone mass measurements predict the incidence of both nonspine and vertebral body fractures. A second necessary element is the availability of therapeutic options which would be based on these measurements. The effectiveness of estrogen replacement therapy in preventing bone loss a

[Mineral saturation, ossification and synostosis of the hand bones in adolescents and youth].

The results on X-ray densitometric studies of the hand bones in adolescent and young people at the age of 10--17 years (369 persons in all) are presented in the work. Processes of mineralization, ossification and synostosis, as the investigation has demonstrated, are closely connected with each other. From the beginning of ossification in the pisiform and sesamoid bones of the first metacarpophalageal joint (11--12 years of age) up to the completion of synostosis in short tubular bones of the hand (15--16 years of age), a decrease of mineral salts is noted in osseous tissue. Hence, accumulatio

The bone scan: where are we now?

The isotope bone scan continues to be the most widely performed nuclear medicine investigation in the UK. The detection of skeletal metastases remains the most common clinical indication. However, the use of the bone scan is changing as it becomes subject to cost pressures, competing imaging modalities, and altering clinical indications. Overall, fewer studies are being performed for investigation of skeletal metastases, but this decrease in numbers has been compensated by increasing use in benign orthopaedic conditions. Advances such as correlative imaging and single photon emission computer

Bone mineral density in patients with chronic hypoparathyroidism.

Photon absorptiometry was used to measure skeletal mass in the proximal femur, lumbar spine, and distal radius in 19 females with hypoparathyroidism after operation for either thyroid carcinoma or hyperparathyroidism. Healthy subjects as well as normocalcemic patients who had undergone the same surgical procedure without developing hypoparathyroidism were used as controls. Skeletal mass was measured after a mean postoperative time of 13 and 10 yr in patients operated on for thyroid carcinoma and hyperparathyroidism, respectively. Bone mass was 10-32% greater in hypoparathyroid patients than in
