The inhalation of atropine sulfate was investigated in a randomized, 4-period, rising-dose study. Atropine sulfate 2, 4, and 6 mg by inhalation, and atropine free base 1.67 mg (equivalent to 2.0 mg atropine sulfate) by intramuscular (IM) injection were given to 8 healthy, nonsmoking subjects. Serum atropine sulfate concentrations were monitored during an 8-h period by radioimmunoassay. Twenty rabbits were intrathecally perfused with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) without increasing the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure. Histologic and ultrastructural studies of the olfactory nerve and nasal mucosa showed HRP along the space between peri- and epineurium down to the smaller nerve branches in the mucosa. Seventeen patients undergoing split-skin grafting each received 3 mg/kg of a sterile 1% lignocaine gel applied to an area of the donor site equal to 3 sq cm/kg. Serial venous blood samples were taken for one hour following application and analysed for serum lignocaine concentration by high pressure liquid chromatography. The concentrations in all the patients were well below those associated with systemic toxicity. A randomized, double-blind, crossover study was carried out on iron absorption from three prenatal supplements by women in the first trimester of pregnancy. The supplements were given to fasting subjects as a single pill early in the morning, and iron absorption was determined from measurements of serum iron performed during the course of the day. In a patient with end-stage renal disease undergoing long-term maintenance hemodialysis, moderately severe metabolic alkalosis developed in the absence of vomiting or gastric drainage. The cause of the acid-base disorder was exogenous alkali administration, in the form of combined ingestion of "nonabsorbable" antacids (aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide), neutral phosphate, and a cation-exchange resin (sodium polystyrene sulfonate). Oral toxicity of botulinal toxin is manifested when the toxin is absorbed from one or more anatomic regions of the intestinal tract and reaches target neurons. Post-absorption levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OHD) after oral administration of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OHD3) were measured in 11 subjects. Five had presented with steatorrhoea of various causes while six had post-gastrectomy osteomalacia. The absorption of vitamin B12 was assessed using the 58Co-absorption test (Schilling test) in 39 patients in whom ileal loops had been used as urinary diversion after excision of the bladder for transitional cell carcinoma. 29% of the patients were found to absorb less than 12% of the offered dose of labelled vitamin B12 after excluding gastric-mediated malabsorption by the modified Schilling test. Examination of haemoglobin, MCV or vitamin B12 in the peripheral blood gave unreliable indications of the absorptive ability of these patients.

A single dose of 0.5 mCi radioiron (55Fe) was injected directly into the amniotic cavity of each of four pregnant monkeys near term. At 6 or 24 hours after 55Fe adminstration, samples of fetal jejunum, ileum, blood, spleen, liver, lung and fetal membranes were taken for radioautography and scintillation counts. Enteral calcium absorption was determined in 18 patients with non-obstructive liver disease (16 with liver cirrhosis, 2 with chronic hepatitis). There was no significant difference in comparison with healthy persons. Osteoporosis in patients with chronic liver disease probably is not due to impaired calcium absorption but to other complications of liver disease as immobility, muscle atrophy, chronic pancreatitis, alcoholism and malnutrition. Osteomalacia on the other hand, is a complication of long standing obstructive liver disease. In these cases vitamin D treatment is indicated.
