One hundred twenty-eight cases of chest injury were seen in a Paediatric Trauma Unit over a 5 1/2-year period. One hundred patients sustained motor vehicle accident (MVA)-related blunt chest injuries, 91 of them as pedestrians. Nine children had blunt chest injuries from falls, 10 had stab wounds (3 assault, 7 accidental), and 9 had gunshot injuries (6 from birdshot used by police during civil disturbance). MVA-related injuries were studied separately, as an etiologically homogeneous group. Sixty-five of these patients were under the age of 6. All but 3 also had serious extrathoracic injuries.

This article presents a description of injuries among 24312 Canadian adolescents, aged 12-24 years, based on the Canadian Community Health Survey, 2000-2001. A total of 3214 (25.6%) males and 2227 (16.5%) females reported having at least one serious injury in the past year. The leading causes of injury in adolescents were: falls; overexertion or strenuous movement; accidentally bumped, pushed or bitten; and accidentally struck or crushed by objects. One hundred and ninety five children aged up to 6 years with burns and scalds (30 non-accidental and 165 accidental) were studied retrospectively. The history, presentation, and other typical injuries assisted the diagnosis of abuse. Scalds accounted for 81% of accidents and 25% of the cases of abuse, and burns for 17% and 44%, respectively. BACKGROUND: Diagnosing NAT (non-accidental trauma) includes a skeletal survey to identify injuries. A follow-up survey is performed for missed injuries. This study examines the necessity of follow-up surveys.
METHODS: The trauma database identified cases of suspected NAT in <4 years olds (2013-2014). Data were stratified by survey, age, injury, then analyzed for the prevalence of findings. All analyses (relative risk, prevalence and odds ratios) utilized RealStats Resource Pack (Trento, Italy).

We report a case of documented transient segmental aperistalsis of the distal esophagus following an accidental electrical injury. There are no other reports in the literature demonstrating this phenomenon. A review of gastrointestinal injury secondary to electrical injury is presented.

Electric arc injuries tend to be very severe and can cause skin burns by direct heat exposure or by igniting clothes. Experience obtained from acid burns in 60 adult patients is reported in this paper. Twelve of them died, while 48 received conservative treatment, and twelve underwent surgery. Attempted suicide accounted for the highest number and severity of those accidental injuries. The therapeutic approach should be chosen on earliest possible endoscopy. Trends towards exploratory laparotomy and blind oesophagus stripping are described, and the problem of conservative therapy is discussed.

BACKGROUND: Research documents that among children admitted to trauma intensive care units the number of rib fractures sustained indicates the child's likelihood of having and severity of intrathoracic injury. Classic metaphyseal lesions associated with childbirth are rare. We report a distal tibial metaphyseal fracture following a difficult breech delivery. Classic metaphyseal fractures are considered highly specific injuries associated with non-accidental trauma. This case depicts a classic metaphyseal lesion sustained during footling breech extraction in an urgent delivery. The traction and torque placed on the distal extremities during this difficult delivery suggest a potential mechanism for this injury.

Foreign body aspiration is the fourth leading cause of death due to unintentional injuries. In 2004, 4470 people died because of inhalation or ingestion of food and other objects as per the National Safety Council Report. We report a rare case of accidental aspiration of an intact bag of cocaine, presenting with acute central airway obstruction and cardiopulmonary arrest, highlighting the challenges in the diagnosis and management strategies for this entity.
