Navigating Family Leave in Cardiothoracic Surgery Training.

BACKGROUND: Cardiothoracic surgery (CTS) training may coincide with family needs including pregnancy, illness, birth/adoption/fostering of a child, and care for family members. Certifying bodies set requirements and limits on family leave, complicating the navigation of family needs during training. Our goal is to examine policies of medical boards and their alignment with the 2022 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education policy and to develop a practical tool to help trainees and program directors navigate family leave. METHODS: A literature review was conducted with PubMed of pu…

What matters after sleeve gastrectomy: patient characteristics or surgical technique?

BACKGROUND: The impact of operative technique on outcomes in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy has been explored previously; however, the relative importance of patient characteristics remains unknown. Our aim was to characterize national variability in operative technique for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and determine whether patient-specific factors are more critical to predicting outcomes. METHODS: We queried the database of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program for laparoscopic sleeve gastrostomies performed in 2015 (n = 88,845). Logistic regre…

Peer- and Mentor-Enhanced Web-Based Training on Substance Use Disorders: A Promising Approach in Low-Resource Settings.

Stigma and insufficient training contribute significantly to the substance use disorder pandemic. This 2014 study assessed the impact in Kenya of online competency-based courses on peer and mentor interactions, using NextGenU.org, the world's only portal to free and accredited higher education. A total of 99 health care workers participated in one of two courses. Completers (50% of those who logged in) reported significant increases in knowledge about substance use disorders and decreases in stigma. Most (92%) stated that they preferred the NextGenU.org courses over classroom courses. All resp
