Hormesis: an adaptive expectation with emphasis on ionizing radiation.

Non-linear fitness gradients with maxima between extremes are expected for any environmental variable to which free-living populations are exposed. For exceedingly toxic agents, including ionizing radiation, such deviations from linearity are close to zero exposure and are conventionally called hormesis. Accordingly, hormesis is an extreme version of the non-linear fitness gradients for general environmental stresses such as temperature fluctuations, for which maximum fitness occurs at the moderate temperature fluctuations to which free-living populations are most commonly exposed. Some metabo

Viruses under mechanical force: Implications and applications.

Viruses are evolving biological entities whose perpetuation depends on their adaptive response to many selection pressures acting on them. Viruses are also solid objects that show some degree of deformability, brittleness, and strength when subjected to mechanical forces. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) allows the controlled application of mechanical force on individual virions, capsids, and viral components under close to physiological conditions. In this way, the structure, dynamics, and mechanical properties of virus particles, and their changes by the action of biologically relevant effector

Balancing Information and Dissipation with Partially Observed Fluctuating Signals.

Biological systems sense and extract information from fluctuating signals while operating under energetic constraints and limited resolution. We introduce a general chemical model in which a signaling pathway is activated by hidden signals and produces a readout molecule. A sensor, here modeled as an abstract optimization agent, is coupled to the signaling process and can tune the readout production. We propose viable strategies for the sensor to estimate, and eventually balance, information gathering on the hidden process and the associated dissipative cost relying solely on counting statisti

Intelligent artificial olfactory nervous system with sensory adaptation capabilities.

Accurate gas identification across diverse environments is crucial for the advancement of intelligent artificial olfaction, but remains challenging for conventional data-driven learning approaches. Here, we report an artificial olfactory nervous system capable of reliably identifying novel gas stimuli regardless of environmental variations by leveraging sensory adaptation mechanisms inspired by biological olfactory systems. Inspired by biological olfactory systems, our system effectively integrates artificial olfactory receptor neurons, cortical neurons, and intermediate olfactory neurons that

Integrating Mechanical Loading, Mechanotransduction, and Biological Responses in Musculoskeletal Tissues Across the Lifespan: Regulation Influenced by Cells, Extracellular Matrix, and Sex.

Development of cellular mechanisms to facilitate mechanosensing and mechanotransduction occurred very early in evolution during adaptation to the boundary conditions of Earth, in particular, gravity. Subsequently, with the evolution of increasingly complex organisms leading to Homo sapiens, multiple levels of biological regulatory control of mechanical loading were introduced for connective tissues of the musculoskeletal system. Integration of mechanosensing mechanisms with biological regulatory variables exhibits tissue-specific, lifespan-specific, sex specific features. A key integration com

[Nutritional problems in old age].

Nutritional problems in the elderly are complex and individually diverse, and therefore a differentiated approach ist mandatory. Interactions of social, psychological and biological factors in the nutrition of the elderly are discussed in four clinical cases: problems of procurement and preparation of food in a patient with sensory aphasia and mild organic brain syndrome; problems of food intake and mastication in a patient with stroke; problems surrounding nutritional requirements and absorption of nutrients in a patient with osteoporosis, and problems relating to nutritional components in a

Beyond probiotics and pathobionts: mechanistic roles of enterococcus-derived bioactive components in health and disease.

The Enterococcus genus comprises an unusual subset of the human microbiota with the dual role of beneficial commensals and opportunistic pathogens. The biological activity of Enterococcus species is not limited to colonization and is mainly driven by numerous bioactive compounds. Metabolites, extracellular vesicles (EVs), exopolysaccharides, and cell wall structures serve as mediators of complex host-microbe interplay. Through the transfer of these bioactive substances, Enterococcus-derived EVs shape host signaling pathways and help bacteria to adapt to environmental conditions. Additionally,

Genome-wide characterization of the Bursaphelenchus xylophilus UGT gene family and its potential roles in detoxification and host interaction.

INTRODUCTION: Pine wilt disease caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus constitutes a severe threat to global pine forests. The UDP-glycosyltransferase (UGT) gene family is involved in xenobiotic detoxification, environmental adaptation, and other biological processes, but systematic identification of this family in B. xylophilus has not yet been performed. This study aimed to comprehensively identify UGT family members in B. xylophilus and clarify their molecular roles in xenobiotic detoxification and host adaptation regulation. METHODS: Based on genome-wide data, we identified 47 UGT genes in

Protein persulfidation in plants: a central regulator of multiple signaling pathways.

Protein persulfidation, a redox-based post-translational modification mediated by hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on cysteine thiols, plays a central regulatory role in plant growth, development, and stress adaptation. Elucidating its biological functions and molecular mechanisms depends on accurate detection, identification, and quantification. Over the past decade, various optimized methods for persulfidation detection have been developed, which can be categorized into modified biotin switch assays, mass spectrometry-based high-throughput analysis, antibody-dependent western blotting, electrophilic t

Multicolor coupling perception enabled by a C8-BTBT/MoS2 p-n junction phototransistor.

Mimicking biological multicolor perception remains a key challenge for artificial vision systems. Herein, we developed a C8-BTBT/MoS2 p-n junction phototransistor that mimics retinal trichromatic coupling through spatiotemporal dynamics and neuromorphic plasticity. The photogenerated carriers separate through the photovoltaic effect between p-type C8-BTBT and n-type MoS2, enhancing the photoresponse and inducing photogating-mediated memory. Following the Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro (BCM) learning rule, the device exhibited wavelength-selective synaptic plasticity. Short-wavelength light (450 nm)

[Features of the coefficient of variation of hematological indicators in persons of middle, elderly and senile age with pneumonia.].

Pneumonia is the leading mortality rate among all infectious diseases. It has been established that the reliable risk group for morbidity and mortality from this nosology includes persons over 60 years of age, and with age the severity of the disease only increases. According to literary data, one of the reasons for the decline in adaptation capabilities of older persons is the phenomenon of «age desinhronosis», which manifests itself in significant fluctuations in the parameters of the internal environment of the body. The purpose of this work was to compare the coefficients of intra- and int

Testing the viviparity-driven-conflict hypothesis: parent-offspring conflict and the evolution of reproductive isolation in a poeciliid fish.

The evolution of viviparity increases the potential for genomic conflicts between mothers and offspring over the level of maternal investment. The viviparity-driven-conflict hypothesis predicts that such conflicts will drive the evolution of asymmetrical reproductive isolation between populations with divergent mating systems. We tested this hypothesis using crosses between populations of a poeciliid fish that differ in their level of polyandry. Our results support the prediction of an asymmetry in the rate of spontaneous abortion in reciprocal crosses, with the highest rate occurring in cross

Metallic topological structures in bone repair implants: Design, properties, and biological interactions.

Bone repair remains a major clinical challenge. Although traditional metal implants, such as titanium and its alloys, provide mechanical strength, they are often limited by stress shielding, insufficient osseointegration, and a lack of biological activity. Recent advances in metallic topological structures offer a promising solution by integrating mechanical adaptability with biological functionality. This review systematically summarizes the design, properties, and biological interactions of metallic topological implants for bone repair. We first compare conventional metallic materials and th

De Novo Brain-Computer Interfacing Deforms Manifold of Populational Neural Activity Patterns in Human Cerebral Cortex.

Human brains are capable of modulating innate activities to adapt to novel environments and tasks; for sensorimotor neural system this means acquisition of a rich repertoire of activity patterns that improve behavioral performance. To directly map the process of acquiring the neural repertoire during tasks onto performance improvement, we analyzed net neural populational activity during the learning of its voluntary modulation by brain-computer interface (BCI) operation in female and male humans. The recorded whole-head high-density scalp electroencephalograms (EEGs) were subjected to dimensio

[The unity of image recognition of tolite homothetic receptors and glycosylation end product receptors in biologic function in case of diabetes].

In compliance with our theory of biologic functions and reactions, pathogenesis of all diseases in formed in the framework of disorder of seven biologic functions: trophology, homeostasis, endoecology, adaptation, locomotion, genus continuation and intelligence. The disorder of biologic function of endoecology ("purity" of intercellular medium in vivo) is the most common basis of pathogenesis of diseases' nosological forms. There are two methods of elimination of disorder of this function. First is the biological reaction of excretion i.e. the removal of minor endogenic phlogogenes (initiators

PANA-Surv: A Pathway-Guided Adaptive Neighborhood Augmentation Framework Using KEGG Pathways for Multi-Omics Cancer Prognosis.

Background/Objectives: Integrating multi-omics data for cancer prognosis remains a challenging problem in bioinformatics because molecular profiles are high-dimensional, heterogeneous, and structured by incomplete biological relationships. Pathway databases provide biologically meaningful prior knowledge for modeling gene-level associations, but the sparsity and local incompleteness of pathway-derived networks often limit the performance of graph-based survival models. This study aimed to develop a pathway-guided framework for improving multi-omics survival prediction and identifying biologica

Decoding endurance performance: integrative genomic and epigenetic insights into the molecular basis of athletic adaptation.

Applied genomics in sports performance has rapidly evolved into a multidisciplinary field aimed at elucidating the biological determinants of complex athletic traits, particularly endurance. Endurance performance represents a highly polygenic and multifactorial phenotype, shaped by the dynamic interplay between genetic predisposition and training-induced adaptations. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of evidence from candidate gene studies, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and meta-analyses to identify genetic variants consistently associated with endurance-related phenotyp

Mitochondrial-Centered Biological Networks in Metabolic Disease: Toward Precision Mitochondrial Medicine.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) are multifactorial metabolic disorders characterized by progressive dysfunction of multiple organs and biological systems. Although mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of disease progression, the mechanisms linking metabolic stress to coordinated tissue dysfunction remain incompletely understood. Comparative proteomic studies have consistently identified coordinated remodeling of oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid oxidation, tricarboxylic acid cycle activity, redox regulation, mitochondrial proteostasis, and adaptive signaling across metabolically affec

Physiological and Recovery Responses to Dietary Polyphenols in the Context of Exercise: Relevance for Muscle Aging and Sarcopenia.

INTRODUCTION: The biological effects of dietary polyphenols have gained increasing attention due to their roles in regulating oxidative stress, inflammatory processes, and mitochondrial function. Human studies suggest that polyphenol intake may support aspects of post-exercise recovery, neuromuscular function, and selected aspects of physical performance. However, most investigations have been conducted in young or metabolically healthy populations, limiting direct clinical translation to older adults. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to synthesize current mechanistic and human evidence

Inner ear sensory system changes as extinct crocodylomorphs transitioned from land to water.

Major evolutionary transitions, in which animals develop new body plans and adapt to dramatically new habitats and lifestyles, have punctuated the history of life. The origin of cetaceans from land-living mammals is among the most famous of these events. Much earlier, during the Mesozoic Era, many reptile groups also moved from land to water, but these transitions are more poorly understood. We use computed tomography to study changes in the inner ear vestibular system, involved in sensing balance and equilibrium, as one of these groups, extinct crocodile relatives called thalattosuchians, tra
