Insight into mechanisms of reduced orthostatic performance after exposure to microgravity: comparison of ground-based and space flight data.

Since the beginning of human spaceflight, the value of understanding mechanisms of physiological adaptation to microgravity became apparent to life scientists who were interested in maintining crew health and developing countermeasures agains adverse effects of the mission. However, several characteristics associated the the logistics of spaceflight presented significant limitations to the scientific study of human adaptation to microgravity. Because space missions are so infrequent and involve minimal numbers of crewmembers, meaninful statistical analysis of data are limited. Reproducibility

Intermittent fasting driven different adaptive strategies in Eothenomys miletus (Red-backed vole) at different altitudes: based on the patterns of variations in intestinal microbiota.

In the face of global warming, the Eothenomys miletus (Red - backed vole), a species dwelling in highland mountainous regions, is likely to encounter difficulties. Given its restricted mobility, it may struggle with the uncertainty of food resources. In such circumstances, it becomes increasingly crucial for this species to adjust its diverse responses to fulfill its energy requirements. E. miletus specimens were gathered from different altitudes for intermittent fasting (IF) experiments. In these experiments, the specimens underwent random fasting for 3 days within a seven - day cycle. 16 S r

Epigenetic Phase Variation in Bacterial Adaptation to Environmental Stress: A Narrative Review.

Epigenetic phase variation (ePV) represents a sophisticated regulatory mechanism by which bacteria rapidly adapt to environmental stressors without permanent genetic alterations. This review examines the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial ePV mediated by DNA methylation, with particular emphasis on restriction-modification systems, orphan methyltransferases, and their roles in stress adaptation. ePV systems enable bacteria to generate phenotypically diverse populations through reversible ON/OFF switching of gene expression, facilitated by phase-variable DNA methyltransferases. These sys

Trajectories of short-term operator adaptation in cobot-assisted disassembly: a within-subject multimodal analysis.

Collaborative robots are increasingly deployed in Industry 5.0 disassembly cells, yet how operators adapt across repeated cobot interactions is rarely characterised multimodally. The Day-2 axis of the MultiPhysio-HRC corpus was analysed: forty-two participants performed up to five repetitions each of a Fanuc CRX-20 cobot-assisted disassembly and a matched manual control, with 12-channel dry EEG, ECG, EDA, EMG and respiration recorded throughout; primary inference was based on the paired-analysis cohort (n = 39, ≥ 3 repetitions per context). Mixed-effects models and per-subject physiological re

Cultivation of Leptospira interrogans Within Rat Peritoneal Dialysis Membrane Chambers.

To sustain its zoonotic lifecycle, leptospires must adapt to growth within the host milieu. Signals encountered within the mammal also trigger regulatory programs required by Leptospira for the expression of virulence-related gene products. The complex transcriptional, antigenic, and physiological changes leptospires undergo within the mammal are collectively referred to as "host-adaptation." In this chapter, we describe procedures for the generation of host-adapted Leptospira spp. by cultivation within dialysis membrane chambers (DMCs) implanted in rat peritoneal cavities. In this model, Lept

Adaptation of visual responses in degenerating rd10 and healthy mouse retinas during ongoing electrical stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Visual adaptation is a physiological and perceptual process by which the visual system adjusts to changes in the environment or visual stimuli. This process is fundamental to how we perceive the world around us and allows our visual system to efficiently encode and process visual information. The retina incorporates adaptation within its dozens of functionally distinct retinal ganglion cell types. Meanwhile, the field of retinal prostheses is increasing its understanding of electrical adaptation and cell-specific stimulation. However, very little is known about the interaction of vi

Exome sequencing in extreme altitude mountaineers identifies pathogenic variants in RTEL1 and COL6A1 previously associated with respiratory failure.

Adaptation of humans to challenging environmental conditions, such as extreme temperature, malnutrition, or hypoxia, is an interesting phenomenon for both basic and applied research. Identification of the genetic factors contributing to human adaptation to these conditions enhances our understanding of the underlying molecular and physiological mechanisms. In our study, we analyzed the exomes of 22 high altitude mountaineers to uncover genetic variants contributing to hypoxic adaptation. To our surprise, we identified two putative loss-of-function variants, rs1385101139 in RTEL1 and rs10027267

Adenosine Signaling as a Central Integrative Network in Cellular Stress Responses and a Therapeutically Actionable Target in Human Disease.

Adenosine has emerged as a central metabolic signal linking cellular stress to systemic physiological adaptation. Under conditions such as hypoxia, ischemia, inflammation, and tissue injury, extracellular adenosine triphosphate (eATP) released from stressed cells is sequentially metabolized by the ectonucleotidases CD39 and CD73, generating adenosine that accumulates in the extracellular microenvironment. This stress-responsive nucleoside activates four G-protein-coupled receptors (A1, A2A, A2B, and A3), triggering intracellular signaling networks including the cyclic adenosine monophosphate-p

Central mechanisms regulating coordinated cardiovascular and respiratory function during stress and arousal.

Actual or potentially threatening stimuli in the external environment (i.e., psychological stressors) trigger highly coordinated defensive behavioral responses that are accompanied by appropriate autonomic and respiratory changes. As discussed in this review, several brain regions and pathways have major roles in subserving the cardiovascular and respiratory responses to threatening stimuli, which may vary from relatively mild acute arousing stimuli to more prolonged life-threatening stimuli. One key region is the dorsomedial hypothalamus, which receives inputs from the cortex, amygdala, and o

The effects of physical and psychological stress on the gastro-intestinal tract: lessons from animal models.

Physical and psychological stresses are widely accepted as triggers and / or modifiers of the clinical course of diverse gastrointestinal disorders such as peptic ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease. Growing experimental evidence from a variety of models such as immobilization, thermal injury or early maternal deprivation in laboratory animals uniformly supports the ability of stress to induce the development of gastric ulcers, altered gastrointestinal motility and ion secretion, and increased intestinal permeability leading to the passage of antigens to the lamina pr

Evolutionary functions of early social modulation of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis development in humans.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) is highly responsive to social challenges. Because stress hormones can have negative developmental and health consequences, this presents an evolutionary paradox: Why would natural selection have favored mechanisms that elevate stress hormone levels in response to psychosocial stimuli? Here we review the hypothesis that large brains, an extended childhood and intensive family care in humans are adaptations resulting from selective forces exerted by the increasingly complex and dynamic social and cultural environment that co-evolved with these trai

Triacylglycerols at the crossroads of lipid remodeling and stress tolerance in plants.

Triacylglycerols (TAGs), once considered passive storage reserves confined to seeds, are now recognized as dynamic components of plant lipid metabolism with pivotal roles in stress adaptation. Far from being inert carbon depots, TAGs function as metabolic buffers that integrate energy storage, membrane lipid remodeling, and cellular protection under fluctuating environmental conditions. Abiotic stresses such as temperature extremes, drought, salinity, and nutrient limitation disrupt membrane integrity and lipid homeostasis, leading to the release of free fatty acids and the accumulation of rea

Microbiome-Epigenome Interplay Impacts Microbial Symbiosis and Stress Adaptations in the Brown Planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens).

The gut microbiota and epigenetic processes both contribute to insect survival and adaptation; however, the relationship between these two systems remains largely unexplored. In this study, we used the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens; BPH) to explore microbiome-epigenome interactions and evaluate its impact on BPH survivability under environmental stress. Disruption of the gut microbiome using antibiotics significantly altered the epigenetic profile of various stress-responsive genes in the BPH. Similarly, perturbations in the epigenome induced by 5-azacytidine resulted in an altered mic

Stress-driven strategic games in cancer.

Tumor cells face chronic genotoxic, metabolic, hypoxic, and immune stress that shapes their evolution. While stress-response molecular pathways are well characterized, cancer biology lacks a predictive framework for how cells select among alternative adaptive strategies and how these selections interact to produce tumor-level behavior. We propose that evolutionary game theory, previously applied to cooperation in cancer, should be extended to position stress adaptation itself as the organizing principle of tumor evolution. In this framework, stress-adaptive strategies constitute frequency-depe

Impact of drought stress memory and variations in type and degree on root characteristic, yield stability and drought tolerance in Orchardgrass.

BACKGROUND: As climate change intensifies, perennial plants face more frequent drought periods throughout their lifespan. Drought stress memory in certain plants significantly enhances their adaptability to challenging environmental circumstances. However, in open-pollinated crops, this process is influenced by population plasticity due to the type and degree of genetic diversity, and inbreeding depression. To understand how pre-exposure to moderate drought enhances the plants' response to subsequent severe stresses, four synthetic poly-crossed populations were constructed using parents with c

Distinct properties of human pathogenic Candida species revealed by systematic comparative phenotypic screening of clinical isolates.

UNLABELLED: Fungi associated with humans include several Candida species that rely on phenotypic plasticity for persistence and pathogenicity. Key adaptive traits, such as adherence, stress resistance, and biofilm formation, enable survival in diverse host niches. However, the degree of intra- and interspecific phenotypic variation across human-associated Candida species has not been systematically characterized. We analyzed 1,366 clinical isolates representing 13 Candida species using high-throughput quantitative fitness profiling under controlled environmental stressors, antifungal exposure,
