In a clinic population of 509 type 1 diabetic patients aged 16-45 years, 5.5% had received treatment for thyroid disorders (20 hypothyroid, three males; eight thyrotoxicosis, four males), and Addison's disease was present in four patients (0.8%, one male). In all patients, type 1 diabetes preceded the diagnosis of the other autoimmune disorder. The clinical presentation of hypothyroidism was usually insidious with few symptoms, although an increased frequency of hypoglycaemic symptoms and/or raised serum cholesterol levels often prompted thyroid function testing. In contrast, the patients with

A 76-year-old Japanese woman had suffered from fatigue, weight loss, and cutaneous hyperpigmentation at the age of 38 years and was diagnosed as having tuberculous Addison's disease. Since then, corticosteroids had been administered effectively as hormonal replacement. At the age of 75 years, the patient presented with a progressive, painless swelling in the left eyelid due to an ill-defined tumor of rubbery consistency in the superotemporal aspect of the orbit. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and scintigraphy revealed a wide distribution of tumors, but not in the adrenal glan

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis of the adrenal glands is a common cause of Addison's disease in developing countries. We conducted a study to determine if treatment of such patients with modern anti-tuberculous chemotherapy would lead to an improvement in plasma cortisol and aldosterone levels.
DESIGN: Prospective study.
PATIENTS: 5 patients with Addison's disease secondary to tuberculosis.
MEASUREMENTS: Basal and ACTH stimulated plasma cortisol and aldosterone levels were measured prior to instituting anti-tuberculous chemotherapy, as well as one month after its conclusion. Four patients were agai

A 12-year-old female suffering from adrenocortical insufficiency showed symptoms similar to a gastro-enteritis, and severe electrolytic and acid/base disturbances which progressed into cerebral oedema and death. Autopsy findings included depletion of the adrenal cortex, with enlargement and eosinophilia of surviving cells. In ante-mortem blood, anti-adrenal auto-antibodies were found and elevated levels of ACTH and cortisol with a low level of aldosterone.

The osmoregulation of arginine-8-vasopressin (AVP) was investigated in 14 patients with primary hypothyroidism, in 6 with Addison's disease, and in 21 with central diabetes insipidus (CDI). In the latter disease the effect of histamine stimulus was also evaluated. Plasma AVP was measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Patients with primary hypothyroidism were classified into subgroups with elevated or normal basal levels of plasma AVP. A decreased osmotic threshold was found in hypothyroid patients with augmented basal AVP levels. Patients with Addison's disease exhibited an increased basal level

Treatment of tuberculosis with rifampicin in patients with pre-existing adrenal failure has been reported to induce adrenal crisis due to alteration of cortisol metabolism by induction of hepatic mixed liver oxygenase enzymes. To determine whether mineralocorticoid metabolism is altered by rifampicin treatment, we established the pharmacokinetics of immunoreactive aldosterone. The metabolic clearance rate (MCR) and plasma half-life of this material were measured before and after 6 days of rifampicin treatment (600 mg/day) in seven patients with Addison's disease due to tuberculosis. Antipyrine

In 2 women with known Addison's disease, progressive hyperpigmentation reappeared years after an initial remission under conventional substitution therapy with cortisone. Excessively elevated plasma ACTH concentrations and radiological evidence of sella turcica deformation led to the diagnosis of ACTH-producing adenomas and prompted their removal by transsphenoidal microsurgery. In one patient, a large Crooke's cell adenoma with extensive extrasellar expansion had caused severe and irreversible bilateral defects of the visual fields and unilateral optic atrophy. Surgical removal of the tumour

A review of 295 patients with autoimmune Addison's disease which occurred as part of a polyglandular autoimmune syndrome is presented. Information of 41 cases was obtained from our clinics and from the examination of medical records, while 254 cases were culled from the literature. We report that autoimmune Addison's disease in association with other autoimmune diseases occurs in at least two distinct types. Addison's disease occurring in Type I polyglandular autoimmune disease (PGA) is associated with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis and/or acquired hypoparathyroidism. The age of onset is pr

The histories of 118 (sixty-one males, fifty-seven females) with idiopathic Addison's disease were reviewed and their sera tested for adrenal, thyroid, gastric and parathyroid antibodies. Adrenal antibodies were found in approximately 50% of patients with idiopathic Addison's disease. The majority of these patients, particularly the females, had an associated diagnosed disease. Studies of antibodies to various tissues is of assistance in detecting the frequent sub-clinical occurrence of other diseases in idiopathic Addison's disease. The onset of idiopathic Addison's disease in sixty-four of t

OBJECTIVE: The effect of autoimmune Addison's disease (AAD) on mental health is not well known. The aim of this study was to examine the use of psychotropic drugs around diagnosis and after long-term follow-up in Swedish individuals with AAD.
DESIGN AND METHODS: In this population-based cohort study, national health and population registers and the Swedish Addison Registry were used to identify individuals diagnosed with AAD between July 2006 and December 2019 and matched population controls. The Swedish Prescribed Drug Register was used to retrieve information on annual dispensations (yes/no

This case reports deals with a male patient, white, aged 51, bricklayer, tobacco smoker. At 43 years old a tubercular epididimite was surgically treated with orchiectomy. Recently, the reports marked weakness, weight loss, headache, vertigo, hypotension. On admittance to the hospital, hyperpigmentation was also present. Previous therapy (cortisone acetate 40 mg/die), was suspended, clinical investigations showed impaired adrenal and thyroidal functions; antimicrosomal antibodies were also present. Therefore therapy with cortisone acetate (25 mg x 2/die, 9-alpha-fluorohydrocortisone 0.1 mg/die
