Heat, menstruation, and mental health in adolescence and young adulthood: Understudied in climate-health research.

Ambient heat is an escalating climate-related hazard, yet its implications for menstruation and adolescent and young adult mental health remain understudied. Menstruating individuals face unique physiological and psychosocial challenges that may be intensified in the presence of heat stress. These challenges can be further shaped by stigma, period poverty, and developmental vulnerability, with potential implications for depression, anxiety, and psychological wellbeing. Heat exposure may disrupt thermoregulation, exacerbate menstrual symptoms, and heighten psychological stress, but the combined

Mental health and health-related quality of life in adolescents surgically treated for hypospadias in childhood.

BACKGROUND: There is limited research and conflicting results on the mental health and health-related quality of life of individuals surgically treated for hypospadias in childhood. Furthermore, the significance of patient-reported outcomes (PRO) in hypospadias is growing. More research is necessary on these topics, particularly in adolescents. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare mental health, health-related quality of life, body satisfaction, self-esteem, penile appearance, and sexual function outcomes in 16-year-old adolescents who had surgery for hypospadias in childhood with a healthy compari

Association between simultaneity of health-risk behaviours and self-rated health in Brazilian adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the association between simultaneity of four health-risk behaviours, namely, low levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (insufficient MVPA: <420 min/week), tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and excessive television (TV)-(>2 h/d of TV viewing) and self-rated health (SRH) in Brazilian adolescents. METHODS: We used data of 100,551 adolescents from the National School Health Survey, a national cross-sectional study carried out in 2015. Association between simultaneity of health risk behaviours (i.e. the ratio between observed and expected prevalence rat

Health-related behaviors and mental health states of South Korean adolescents with atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic skin disease with a negative influence on adolescent mental health state. We aimed to identify the influencing factors for mental health in adolescents with AD. We used data from the 13th Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) conducted in 2017. KYRBS data were obtained from a stratified, multistage, clustered sample. Participants responded to the question "have you ever been diagnosed with AD by a doctor?" and several yes/no questions about stress, depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. Among 62 276 participants, the proportion of ad

The oral health of homeless adolescents and young adults and determinants of oral health: preliminary findings.

A survey was administered to 55 homeless adolescents and young adults aged 14 to 28 years who presented for care at a community health center in Seattle, Washington in 2005. Forty-five valid surveys were analyzed. The aim of the study was to identify factors associated with self-reported oral health. The most common self-reported dental problem was sensitive teeth (52.6%), followed by discolored teeth (48.6%), toothache (38.5%), or a broken tooth (37.8%). Dental problems were associated with lower self-reported oral health, while non-high school graduates, mixed race youths, and methamphetamin

Smartphone use, sleep, and mental health in Korean adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that problematic smartphone use is associated with poor sleep quality and poor mental health among adolescents. However, little is known about whether the moderate use of smartphone without addiction is associated with poor mental health and whether the association is independent of sleep quality. OBJECTIVE: Using nationally representative data, this study examined the associations of smartphone use duration with sleep satisfaction and mental health conditions (generalized anxiety disorder [GAD], depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and suicidal attempts). Mental Health of Ukrainian Adolescents After Russian Invasions.

IMPORTANCE: Russia first invaded Ukraine in 2014, annexing the Crimean Peninsula and occupying parts of eastern Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion that is currently ongoing. Despite the chronic nature of the armed conflict, evidence of its cumulative impact on adolescent mental health since 2014 remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of wartime traumatic stressors, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depressive symptoms, and suicidality and to examine the differential associations of war exposure with adolescent mental health. DESIGN

Digital-Media Use and Mental Health in Children and Adolescents.

Digital media have become a central part of children's and adolescents' daily lives, with increasing usage time and decreasing age of first exposure in recent years. While digital technologies offer opportunities for social participation, access to information, education, and therapeutic support, they are also associated with several risks to mental health. These include problematic use patterns, cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content and hazardous contacts as well as commercial exploitation through manipulative design practices ("dark patterns"). This evidence review summarizes current re

The perspectives of adolescents with urinary incontinence on their health service needs.

AIM: Urinary incontinence in adolescents is an under-recognized, chronic condition despite the availability of effective interventions. Adolescents with urinary incontinence experience greater social, emotional, and psychological difficulties and more school-related distress compared to their peers with normal bladder control. This study aims to describe the health care needs of adolescents with urinary incontinence, through their lived experiences with continence services. METHODS: This study employed a phenomenological approach within an interpretivist paradigm to explore the lived experien
