Negative Parenting Affects Adolescent Internalizing Symptoms Through Alterations in Amygdala-Prefrontal Circuitry: A Longitudinal Twin Study.

BACKGROUND: The synergic interaction of risk genes and environmental factors has been thought to play a critical role in mediating emotion-related brain circuitry function and dysfunction in depression and anxiety disorders. Little, however, is known regarding neurodevelopmental bases underlying how maternal negative parenting affects emotion-related brain circuitry linking to adolescent internalizing symptoms and whether this neurobehavioral association is heritable during adolescence. METHODS: The effects of maternal parenting on amygdala-based emotional circuitry and internalizing symptoms

Rumination Mediates the Relationship Between Negative Affect and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms in Female Interpersonal Trauma Survivors.

Prior research has identified both rumination and negative affect (NA) as dimensional constructs related to the development and maintenance of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While both dimensions demonstrate significant positive relationships with symptoms of PTSD, the relationship between the two within the context of the disorder has yet to be explored. Consistent with prior research in the social anxiety literature, the present study seeks to examine a model of mediation by which rumination accounts for the significant relationship between NA and PTSD symptoms. Participants included

Type and timing of adverse childhood experiences differentially affect severity of PTSD, dissociative and depressive symptoms in adult inpatients.

BACKGROUND: A dose-dependent effect of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) on the course and severity of psychiatric disorders has been frequently reported. Recent evidence indicates additional impact of type and timing of distinct ACE on symptom severity experienced in adulthood, in support of stress-sensitive periods in (brain) development. The present study seeks to clarify the impact of ACE on symptoms that are often comorbid across various diagnostic groups: symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), shutdown dissociation and depression. A key aim was to determine and compare the i

Posttraumatic stress disorder as a moderator of the association between negative affect and bulimic symptoms: an ecological momentary assessment study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the potential moderating effect of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on the emotion-behavior relationship in individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD: A total of 119 women with BN were involved in the study. Participants were divided into 2 groups: those with BN and PTSD (n = 20) and those with BN only (n = 99). Ecological momentary assessment procedures were used for the examination of affect, frequency of bulimic behaviors, and the relationship of affect and bulimic behavior over time. Psychological Interventions Targeting Depressive Symptoms in Children and Adolescents Living in War or Conflict Affected Zones: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review maps psychological and psychosocial interventions aimed at reducing depressive symptoms in children and adolescents who continue to live within war- or armed conflict–affected zones. We sought to identify which approaches are specifically designed for depressive symptoms, how they are delivered in humanitarian contexts, and where robust evidence is still lacking. RECENT FINDINGS: Twenty-one studies published between 2005 and 2025 were identified across diverse settings including Palestine, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal, and Northern Uganda. Most interven

The role of social support in transdiagnostic symptom networks in affective and psychotic disorders: a cross-sectional and longitudinal network analysis.

Symptoms and psychosocial factors interact dynamically across affective and psychotic disorders, yet longitudinal evidence remains limited. Building on the network theory of psychopathology, this study conceptualizes mental disorders as systems shaped by symptom-environment interactions. Using data from a two-site German cohort (N = 2743), we examined 36 psychopathological symptoms and 11 psychosocial factors using cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. At baseline, transdiagnostic symptom networks were estimated and compared between patients with affective or psychotic disorders (N = 1569

Diminished Positive Affect as an Understudied Feature of Nicotine Withdrawal: Development and Validation of a Short Withdrawal Symptom Scale (SWiSS).

INTRODUCTION: Given the burgeoning evidence that low positive affect (PA) and anhedonia are important smoking withdrawal symptoms, we added the PA/Friendly items of the Profile of Mood States (POMS) alongside established withdrawal items from the Shiffman-Jarvik Withdrawal Questionnaire (SJWQ) to identify the best subsets of items for predicting smoking relapse. The Short Withdrawal Symptom Scale (SWiSS) was generated from these selected items. METHODS: Secondary data analysis was conducted with four randomized clinical trials of cessation-seeking smokers (N = 333) who maintained abstinence f

Transcranial direct current stimulation in affecting neuropsychiatric symptoms of post-COVID syndrome: No change in microstates and functional connectivity.

INTRODUCTION: Neuropsychiatric symptoms of post-covid syndrome (PCS) involve fatigue, brain fog, cognitive impairment, or symptoms of depression and anxiety. These symptoms are in other diagnoses associated with electroencephalography (EEG) changes in microstates and functional connectivity. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is effective in alleviating certain abovementioned symptoms in other diagnoses. The main objective was to evaluate EEG changes in PCS patients after tDCS intervention. METHODS: A randomised control trial (registered in ISRCTN database, No.: ISRCTN10942585) wi

Suicidal Ideation and Non-suicidal Self-injury in Early Adolescence: The Role of ADHD Symptoms, Affect, and Emotion Regulation.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation and non-suicidal selfinjury (NSSI) are highly prevalent during early adolescence and represent serious public health concerns. Emotional dysregulation has been identified as a transdiagnostic factor underlying various risk behaviors, particularly in youth with externalizing difficulties such as attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While prior research has examined these factors independently, few studies have explored their joint and differential contribution to suicide-related outcomes in early adolescence. This study aimed to examine the association o

Potential social-environmental factors affecting ADHD symptoms of 55,528 children from Longhua district, Shenzhen, China.

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders in childhood, frequently persisting into adolescence and adulthood. It is associated with a wide range of comorbid psychiatric and behavioral conditions. While emerging evidence suggests that social and environmental factors may influence the development and expression of ADHD symptoms, large-scale studies incorporating longitudinal data on early-life environmental exposures remain limited. Given the cross-sectional design of this study, we aimed to investigate the frequency and

How Does Poverty Stigma Affect Depression Symptoms for Women Living with HIV? Longitudinal Mediating and Moderating Mechanisms.

PURPOSE: In a sample of women living with HIV, we examined whether individual traits fear of negative evaluation and resilience moderate the internalization of poverty stigma that these women experience from others. We also examined the downstream effects of these processes on depression symptoms using moderated serial mediation analyses. METHODS: Data were collected annually for 4 years (2016-2020; T1, T2, T3, and T4) from 369 women living with HIV at 4 US cities using validated measures. Moderation effects were evaluated examining simple slopes at one standard deviation above and below the

Efficacy of a gluten-free diet in reducing the widespread pain index and symptom severity scale in patients affected by fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Dietary interventions to improve fibromyalgia (FM) symptoms reported conflicting results. This study aimed to treat FM patients with a gluten-free diet (GFD), alternated with a non-restricted gluten-containing diet, followed by a rechallenge of the GFD. METHODS: Twenty postmenopausal women with FM and no history of celiac disease participated. A GFD was assigned for 6 months. This was followed by 3 months of a non-restricted gluten-containing diet and then a new GFD for another 6 months. At each visit, the widespread pain index (WPI) and the symptom severity scale (SS) scores were

Evaluation of the Role of Affective Temperamental Features, Automatic Thoughts, and Symptom Interpretation on Disease Activity in Patients with Axial Spondyloarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Axial spondyloarthritis is a systemic and chronic inflammatory disease. Psychological liability to depression and anxiety influences the disease process, prognosis, and treatment outcomes of other medical conditions. Early detection and treatment of these psychiatric conditions would also help in improving the physical functioning of patients with axial spondyloarthritis by reducing the patient's anxiety and depression symptoms. We evaluated the affective temperamental features, automatic thoughts, symptom interpretation, and their relationship with disease activity in patients with

Case report: Rapid symptom resolution of a mixed affective state with high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar major depressive episodes with mixed features are diagnosed in patients who meet the full criteria for a major depressive episode exhibiting three additional concurrent symptoms of hypomania or mania. Up to half of patients with bipolar disorder experience mixed episodes, which are more likely to be treatment-refractory than pure depression or mania/hypomania alone. CASE: We present a 68-year-old female with Bipolar Type II Disorder with a four-month medication-refractory major depressive episode with mixed features referred for neuromodulation consultation. Factors Affecting Subjective Symptoms in Children with Pes Planovalgus Deformity: A Study Using the Oxford Ankle Foot Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pes planovalgus is one of the most common foot deformities in children and adolescents. However, there is a discrepancy between subjective symptoms and radiographic severity in idiopathic planovalgus deformity, and very few studies have investigated this aspect. Further, the assessment of subjective symptoms in patients with pes planovalgus requires a quantitative scoring system for making meaningful comparisons, such as the Oxford Ankle Foot Questionnaire for Children (OxAFQ-c) and that for parents (OxAFQ-p). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the fact
