Primary delayed ejaculation (DE) is a relatively uncommon condition and has not been studied broadly. In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and penile afferent neuronal function using somatosensory evoked potentials in patients with primary DE. Twenty-four patients with primary DE and 24 age-matched normally potent men were enrolled in this study. Results indicated that patients with primary DE had remarkably higher frequency of masturbatory activity (especially, some with idiosyncratic styles), lower night emissions, longer intravaginal ejaculation latency time (

Single-neuron activities were recorded in the hindlimb region of the primary somatosensory cortex and part of area 5 in awake Japanese monkeys. A total of 1050 units were isolated from five hemispheres of four animals. Receptive fields (RFs) and submodalities were identified for 90% of isolated neurons in areas 3a and 3b. The percentage decreased as the recoding site moved to the more caudal areas. Deep or skin submodality neurons were dominant in area 3a or area 3b, respectively. Deep submodality neurons increased in more caudal areas and were the majority in areas 2 and 5. These observations

Fast, multiple-site optical recording and video imaging techniques were combined to visualize the olfactory processing stream as it flowed through rat olfactory bulb slices stained with the voltage-sensitive dye RH155. A 464 element photodiode detector array was used to record the voltage-sensitive dye signals. Focal electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve layer evoked relatively large optical responses in the olfactory nerve and glomerular layers but only small responses within the external plexiform layer. With paired-pulse stimulation, glomerular attenuation was evident in signals rec

1. The ability of foreign sensory neurones to form novel reflex pathways was studied in bullfrogs by removing, during early larval stages of development, the dorsal root ganglion (d.r.g. 2) that normally provides the entire sensory innervation of the front limb.2. After the operation these tadpoles metamorphosed into frogs that responded to sensory stimuli and had nearly normal use of the limb. Sensation in the limb was mediated by sensory neurones located in an adjacent ganglion (d.r.g. 3); these neurones normally never grow into the arm.3. These neurones were shown, by labelling with horsera

Numerous commercially and non-commercially available pupillometers are nowadays able to assess various biological functions in humans, by evaluating pupils' dynamics in response to specific stimuli. However, the use of pupillometers for ophthalmic afferent evaluations (i.e., photoreceptoral responses) in real-world settings is relatively limited. Recent scientific and technological advances, coupled with artificial intelligence methods have improved the performance of such devices to objectively detect, quantify, and classify functional disturbances of the retina and the optic nerve. This revi

Neuro-ophthalmology is an interdisciplinary that covers neurology and ophthalmology. Neuro-ophthalmology involves not only visual afferent system disorders but also visual efferent system disorders. We have recognized that any disturbance in afferent system may result in vision decrease or loss. However, our understanding of visual efferent system disorders including strabismus, diplopia, ocular motility and abnormal head posture is incomplete. More attentions should be paid to ocular motor pathways disorders in neuro-ophthalmology including clinical characteristics, localization of potential

Dystonia is conventionally attributed to dysfunction in central motor circuits, yet several clinical features, including sensory tricks, task specificity, and abnormalities in somatosensory processing, indicate an influence of sensory input. Whether peripheral sensory afferents are passive conduits to central circuits or contribute to dystonia pathophysiology remains unresolved. To examine whether peripheral sensory afferents participate in dystonia networks beyond their role as upstream inputs. Evidence was synthesized across five domains: phenomenology, electrophysiology, neuroimaging, genet

BACKGROUND: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an emerging bioelectronic therapy for regulating food intake and controlling gastric motility. However, the effects of different VNS parameters and polarity on postprandial gastric motility remain incompletely characterized.
METHODS: In anesthetized rats (N = 3), we applied monophasic electrical stimuli to the left cervical vagus and recorded compound nerve action potential (CNAP) as a measure of nerve response. We evaluated to what extent afferent or efferent pathway could be selectively activated by monophasic VNS. In a different group of rats (N

Efferent fibers were electrically stimulated in the brain stem, while afferent activity was recorded from the superior vestibular nerve in barbiturate-anesthetized chinchillas. We concentrated on canal afferents, but otolith afferents were also studied. Among canal fibers, calyx afferents were recognized by their irregular discharge and low rotational gains. In separate experiments, stimulating electrodes were placed in the efferent cell groups ipsilateral or contralateral to the recording electrode or in the midline. While single shocks were ineffective, repetitive shock trains invariably led

The method of axonal transport of horse-radish peroxidase was used to detect the localization of neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve sending the axons to the pyloric sphincter. The investigation was carried out in cats. Under study were also morphological features of the nodular ganglion responsible for afferent innervation of the sphincter. The maximum amount of the corresponding cells are found in the dorsomedial part of the dorsal motor nucleus in the area from +1.0 to +2.0 mm (with respect to obex). The afferent neurons to which information comes from interoceptors of th

The retino-hypothalamic tract of the Syrian hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) was examined using intraocular injections of horseradish peroxidase conjugated to cholera toxin. In addition to the retinal input to the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), a retinal projection to the caudal paraventricular nuclei was identified. This projection may mediate some effects of light upon pineal gland physiology independently of the SCN and the circadian-rhythm generating system.

Attempts were made to determine brainstem and cerebellar afferent and efferent projections of the superior vestibular nucleus (SVN) and cell group 'y' ('y') in the cat using axoplasmic tracers. Injections of HRP, WGA-HRP and [3H]amino acids were made into SVN and 'y' using two different infratentorial stereotaxic approaches. Controls were provided by unilateral HRP injections involving the oculomotor nuclear complex (OMC), the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC) and the deep cerebellar nuclei (DCN). Large injections of SVN almost invariably involved 'y' and dorsal parts of the lateral vestibul

Previous in vivo studies have shown that beta-alanine is incorporated specifically into the dipeptide L-carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine). In the present study, we administered beta-[3H]alanine to the nasal cavity of hamsters and used biochemical analyses to identify the radioactively labeled compounds in the olfactory epithelium and olfactory bulb and autoradiography to demonstrate the localization and transport of the label in the primary afferents of the olfactory system. The olfactory epithelium and lamina propria were labeled intensely 6 hr after intranasal beta-[3H]alanine administrati

In man and chimpanzee, the large-celled region in the posteroinferior portion of the lateroventral thalamic mass, commonly called the nucleus ventralis posterior thalami, is separated cytoarchitecturally into two regions. The anterior portion is called the nucleus ventrointermedius (Vim) and the posterior part, the nucleus ventrocaudalis (Vc). In the chimpanzee it was found that most of the fibers from the superior cerebellar peduncle entered Vim on the way to distribution in the anterior half of the lateroventral thalamic mass. Fibers from the posterior spinal column (medial lemniscus) entere

Afferents to the nucleus accumbens from different sources innervate specific areas of the central "core" and peripheral "shell" and are related to each other, at the light microscopical level, in an intricate overlapping and nonoverlapping way. This lack of homogeneity suggests that this region consists of circuits involving emsembles of neurons modulated by specific sets of convergent afferent inputs and abnormal regulation of such ensembles has been implicated in mental disorders. Early extracellular studies suggested that individual Acb neurons might respond to activation of afferents from

BACKGROUND: Lamina I projection neurons respond to painful stimuli, and some are also activated by touch or hair movement. Neuropathic pain resulting from peripheral nerve damage is often associated with tactile allodynia (touch-evoked pain), and this may result from increased responsiveness of lamina I projection neurons to non-noxious mechanical stimuli. It is thought that polysynaptic pathways involving excitatory interneurons can transmit tactile inputs to lamina I projection neurons, but that these are normally suppressed by inhibitory interneurons. Vertical cells in lamina II provide a p

Excessive inflammation causes a wide range of diseases. Here, we found that stimulating TRPV1+ nerves at the nape activated the nucleus of the solitary tract and C1 neurons in the brainstem via the somatosensory afferent pathway, and rapidly induced the secretion of corticosterone, and drove the vagal-adrenal axis to release serum catecholamines, and activated the autonomic-splenic reflex to suppress cytokine production. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis revealed that stimulating TRPV1+ nerves significantly changed the expression of genes enriched in multiple pathways related to the inflammato

AIMS: Clinical application of pudendal nerve (PN) afferent stimulation to restore bladder emptying in persons with neurological disorders requires increased stimulation-evoked voiding efficiencies (VEs). We tested the hypothesis that selective co-stimulation of multiple PN branches, either bilateral dorsal nerve of the penis (DNP) stimulation or selective stimulation of both the cranial sensory nerve (CSN) and DNP, will evoke larger reflex bladder contractions and result in higher VEs than stimulation of any single afferent pathway alone.
METHODS: We measured the strength of bladder contracti
